"Visiting relatives? But aren't you an orphan, Ye Qiu?"
Tang San looked at Ye Qiu strangely, somewhat unable to make sense of it. He had known since childhood that Ye Qiu had survived on the aid of the people in Holy Soul Village.
Xiao Wu, who had been staring at the things in Ye Qiu's hands and swallowing her saliva, also raised her head in confusion to look at him. She had spent quite some time in Holy Soul Village and knew everything about Ye Qiu from childhood to adulthood. He really was an orphan.
"I said I was visiting relatives. How can we be relatives if I don't visit?" Ye Qiu curled his lips, his eyes fixed on Xiao Wu, then confessed honestly with a smile. "Let me tell you something. Your brother here already has a fiancée!"
"A fiancée?!"
Tang San was utterly astonished. He looked at Ye Qiu, then at Xiao Wu, unsure whether he should be happy or celebrate. For no apparent reason, he asked, "Then what about Xiao Wu?!"
"Fiancée..." Xiao Wu, whose face had still held some curiosity upon hearing Ye Qiu's words, froze at once and stared blankly at him.
Having lived as a human for more than ten years, she naturally understood what the words "fiancée" meant.
It meant Ye Qiu had someone else outside?! It meant he liked another bunny, and he didn't want to eat her anymore?! Hearing Tang San's question—
Ye Qiu looked into Xiao Wu's blank crimson eyes, which carried grievance, fear, and confusion.
He did feel somewhat pleased with himself, but also a little guilty.
In front of Tang San, Ye Qiu smiled and sat down at the bedside. He leaned toward Xiao Wu, wrapped an arm around her shoulders, and turned to look at her. Gently pinching her rounded shoulder, he asked softly, "Xiao Wu. How do you want me to treat you?"
"I..."
Xiao Wu raised her eyes to look at Ye Qiu before her. The joy of their reunion had long since vanished, and her heart was a tangled mess. She had no idea what to do.
She stubbornly pressed her red lips together, her large round crimson eyes blinking as she held back the tears threatening to spill over. Slowly turning her head away, she stopped looking at Ye Qiu, lowered her head despondently, and anxiously twisted the corner of her clothes in her hands.
She was hurt and sad, yet she did not forget to give him an answer.
"I... I don't know."
Xiao Wu's voice was quiet, filled with confusion and a sobbing tone. She had clearly been so obedient, willing to do anything for Ye Qiu. Why did he suddenly not want her anymore?
"Xiao Wu."
Tang San, who had been secretly a little pleased, felt his heart tighten when he saw this and heard the sadness in Xiao Wu's voice. He immediately denounced Ye Qiu. "Ye Qiu, how can you do this?! It's only been two months. Are you joking? Xiao Wu has been so good to you during this time—"
"I'm not joking." Ye Qiu shrugged and cut Tang San off. He did not want to hide anything. Whether it was because confession brought leniency or because he had nothing to fear, every word he said was the honest truth.
Besides, he could see for himself how Xiao Wu treated him. He could put himself in her shoes. He did not need anyone else to elaborate; he understood better than Tang San what Xiao Wu felt for him.
Thinking of Xiao Wu's emotions, Ye Qiu did not want to say anything more to Tang San. Xiao Wu seemed about to cry, and soothing her was the priority. "All right, Little San. I'll handle this myself, so just put your mind at ease." Ye Qiu stood and patted Tang San on the shoulder, then ignored him and turned to unpack all the food he had bought.
Tang San frowned as he watched Xiao Wu secretly raise her head to look at Ye Qiu. The small joy in his heart vanished without a trace, leaving him feeling terribly uncomfortable. He could not help but comfort her. "Xiao Wu, don't be sad—"
Before Tang San could finish, Xiao Wu lifted her tear-stained crimson eyes and kicked those words aside. "Little San, Ye Qiu is right. This is between the two of us. You should go take care of your own business first."
"Xiao Wu. You..."
Tang San's expression stiffened slightly. Looking at the two of them, he could only sigh helplessly in his heart. Even as he was leaving, he did not forget to stand up for Xiao Wu. "All right, then. I should go report to Teacher as well. Ye Qiu, you'd better talk properly. At a time like this, you mustn't hit her!"
"I never hit her first."
With his back to Tang San, Ye Qiu wore a strange expression. Since when had Tang San become so meddlesome?
"Good."
Tang San nodded in satisfaction, then turned and left the Seventh Dorm. He went to Yu Xiaogang's little room to discuss life.
After dividing the food he had brought back into two portions, Ye Qiu slowly turned around.
Noticing Ye Qiu turn around, Xiao Wu continued hanging her head, her expression sorrowful and tears glimmering in her eyes.
Watching Tang San's back disappear from view, Ye Qiu immediately relaxed.
What he had done over the past two months was hardly something he could tell Tang San about.
Besides, Ye Qiu had the feeling that the way Tang San looked at him had become a little different. And Tang San really had been far too talkative just now.
Setting those thoughts aside, Ye Qiu sat back down beside Xiao Wu and held out the food in his hand.
Xiao Wu merely kept her head lowered without moving, while the occasional rumble came from her stomach.
Ye Qiu rolled his eyes helplessly, placed the food in front of Xiao Wu, and asked softly, "Little bunny, are you still eating?"
"I'll eat. I'm eating." Xiao Wu's petite body trembled. She quickly wiped her eyes with her sleeve, raised her head slightly, and reached out to take the food. Her eye sockets were red, clearly showing that she had cried.
Ye Qiu's eyes flickered as he fell silent. Only then did he realize that Xiao Wu was completely unlike her usual overbearing self. She did not make a fuss or cause a scene; she merely lowered her head and cried quietly to herself.
"Here, take the chopsticks. Eat first."
Ye Qiu could not help softening his voice further. As he handed her the chopsticks, he shifted his seat slightly farther away from Xiao Wu. Otherwise, he would not even have room to use his own chopsticks.
Xiao Wu had just taken the chopsticks when she noticed Ye Qiu's movement. Her face turned pale, and her delicate body swayed. With tears filling her eyes, she looked at Ye Qiu, who was eating heartily, her face full of confusion.
She slowly picked up a few grains of rice and stiffly brought them to her mouth. Even though she tried to take small bites, Xiao Wu still felt as if something were blocking her throat. The plentiful food tasted bland and was difficult to swallow.
"Ye... Ye Qiu~ Why?"
Ye Qiu, his mouth full of food, suddenly heard her clear voice. It trembled slightly and sounded somewhat hoarse instead.
"Hey, don't cry."
Ye Qiu turned around. Seeing the tears on Xiao Wu's face, he hurriedly set down his food and raised a hand to wipe them away.
Xiao Wu swallowed the few grains of rice in her mouth and slightly raised her head, allowing Ye Qiu to cup her cheeks. Looking at him, the tears in her eyes were about to spill over again.
"Ye Qiu, why don't you want me anymore?"
"When did I ever say I didn't want you?" Ye Qiu looked utterly confused. He had possessed the virtue of thrift since childhood—how could he possibly not want Xiao Wu?
Wishing everyone a happy life!
