A true Duelist should possess the calmness of facing a collapsing mountain without flinching. No matter the situation or circumstances, they should remain composed, never letting impulse take over and affect their rational judgment.
Koji Sato closed his eyes, breathing deeply, repeating this mantra to himself over and over—
—Hitting people is against the rules.
Because remembering that was really hard when facing this little brat in front of him.
With only two cards left in his Hand, there was nothing Koji Sato could do but grit his teeth and announce the End Phase. Then it was Kira's turn again, and the fun time resumed.
"Draw." Kira drew a card from his Deck.
At this moment, Koji Sato's front and back rows were completely clean, practically an Empty Field just begging for someone to commit a crime. In this era, before Yu-Gi-Oh! was tainted by rampant Hand Traps, an Empty Field was basically equivalent to running naked, a situation where someone could be tackled and handled without any psychological burden.
So Kira didn't waste any more words and immediately played the Monster Card he had just drawn.
"Normal Summon 'Head Zaluug' in Attack Position!"
A one-eyed warrior with a weathered face appeared on Kira's field, one eye covered by an eyepatch.
[Head Zaluug, ATK 1400]
"Battle Phase," Kira commanded. "Head Zaluug, Direct Attack on the player."
The warrior took the order, directly pulled out two revolvers, and transformed into a gunfighter, firing rapid shots. A string of projected bullets pierced through Koji's body, the invisible impact causing him to sway and stumble back half a step.
In the latest Dueling System developed by KaibaCorp, the monsters summoned by the Duel Disk weren't just holographic projections; they were also equipped with Haptic Feedback Devices. While they wouldn't cause actual damage to the Duelist, they were sufficient to simulate realistic impacts and a certain degree of pain stimulation to enhance the immersive Dueling experience.
[Koji, LP 4000 → LP 2600]
Taking the direct hit to the face, he took a deep breath.
Good, it's just a small fry with only 1400 ATK. I can still handle it.
But then he saw Kira smile: "Head Zaluug's Effect activates. When this card inflicts Battle Damage to the opponent, I can choose one of two effects to activate.
Effect One: Your opponent randomly Discards one card from their Hand.
Effect Two: Your opponent sends the top two cards of their Deck to the Graveyard."
Koji's eyelids twitched violently.
"Wait, don't tell me you... you..."
His face began to contort, his expression gradually becoming panicked, and his body instinctively recoiled, out of his control.
"That's right, I choose Effect One," Kira said. "Erase another card from your Hand."
As his words fell, Zaluug had already raised its revolver. With a bang, a projected hole appeared on one of Koji's two remaining Hand cards.
Koji gritted his teeth, sending another card to the Graveyard, his eyes wide with fury.
Now he only had one card left...
This wasn't the only game he had ever lost in his life, nor was the opponent the most powerful he had ever faced.
But this was definitely the game that made him want to hit someone the most.
Seriously, I haven't been able to play a single card all game?! Can you believe it?
"I'll Set two more cards to the field, and end my turn."
Two more abyss-like Set Cards appeared on Kira's back row.
This time, when Koji saw those two extra Set Cards, his reaction was completely different from his previous dismissive attitude. His breathing almost stopped.
Again? Don't tell me...
Please, just let me play a card...
This turn's progression clearly exceeded the spectators' expectations as well. The students on both sides exchanged glances, all wearing expressions of utter bewilderment.
How should one describe this Duel?
It felt really weird, extremely weird.
Want to see fast-paced offense and defense and a battle of strength? Not here. All you'll find here are Underworld Players trying to mess with your head.
Want to see high-speed Summons and spectacular big monsters? Not here either. All you'll find here are Underworld Players looking satisfied after messing with your head.
Anyway, as the game had progressed so far, one side hadn't been able to play a single card, so there was basically no strategy to analyze or evaluate. As for the side that had played cards, every move, every card, seemed to be subtly guided by two words—
—Revenge Deck Strategy.
Meaning, revenge against society.
This guy didn't summon a single monster to attack, didn't touch the opponent's Life Points at all. His entire sequence of actions seemed to silently declare: I might not win, but you are absolutely not going to play Yu-Gi-Oh! today.
Isn't that just revenge against society?
"Junior Disciple, Dueling like this isn't right..."
Koji tried hard to maintain the image of a gentle Senior, but his twitching facial muscles and trembling voice seemed to be on the verge of giving out.
Kira smiled without speaking, politely making a "please" gesture, indicating it was Koji's turn to play Yu-Gi-Oh! again.
That being said, card players all knew that Yu-Gi-Oh! was a cruel game. It was enough if just one side got to play.
Koji reluctantly raised his Duel Disk once more.
"Alright, it's my turn."
He gritted his teeth.
He had only one card left in his hand, and it was an Equip Spell. With no monsters to summon, it was clearly useless.
This was the Draw that would decide his fate.
But a true Duelist would never back down. Just like the legendary Duel King, Yugi Mutou, said: believe in your Deck, and it will surely answer you.
He believed in the bond between himself and his Deck!
Koji Sato placed his finger on his Deck, took a deep breath, and silently prayed.
Please! Let it be a Level 4 Monster!
Then, with a Draw that seemed infused with his very soul, he pulled the card with a stylish flourish.
The moment he opened his eyes and glimpsed the card, Koji Sato's pupils dilated in shock. He almost burst into laughter.
I got it!
Not only did he Draw a monster he could summon, but it was Lizard Soldier of Greed, a Level 4 Monster with 1850 ATK. It was precisely 50 ATK higher than the highly sought-after 1800 ATK attackers currently popular on the market – a difference that felt almost mocking. It was the strongest lower-level monster in his Deck.
As expected, his Deck had answered his call!
However, just as Koji's lips curved into a smile, as if the horn of counterattack was about to sound...
...when he looked up and saw a Set Card the opponent had flipped face-up at some point, his smile instantly froze.
Trap Card - Confiscation, Second Copy.
Activate during the opponent's Draw Phase. The card the opponent Draws is sent directly to the Graveyard.
Koji Sato: "."
"According to Confiscation's Effect," Kira said politely, "please discard that card as well."
Koji was biting his lip so hard it was about to bleed. With a pained expression, he sent the crucial comeback card, Lizard Soldier of Greed, to the Graveyard. He looked down and saw he still only had that lonely Equip Spell left in his hand.
"Turn... turn end," Koji declared dejectedly.
"Then it's my turn again. Draw."
Kira glanced at the card he Drew; it was another Trap.
His Hand was overflowing with Red Traps, but the opponent clearly had no cards left to trap. So he added the card to his Hand and casually waved his hand again. "Head Zaluug, Direct Attack."
[Koji, LP 2600 → LP 1200]
"Zaluug's Effect activates again. Effect One, of course."
Kira pointed at the last card in his hand.
"Discard that one too."
Koji Sato watched his last card go to the Graveyard. He suddenly thought that maybe he should have Set this card on the field last turn. Although it wouldn't have done much, at least he could have kept it...
His state of mind was collapsing; he had completely forgotten.
Though it probably wouldn't have changed the situation anyway.
"Turn end."
"Then it's my turn. Draw."
This time, Koji Drew a card, but he didn't even look at what he got. Instead, his eyes were fixed straight on Kira's backrow.
It was as if he was asking, No traps, right? Can I Draw? Am I really Drawing?
Kira chuckled and signaled him to proceed.
Having finally struggled through the Draw Phase and entered this turn's Standby Phase, Koji Sato was almost in tears.
He probably never would have dreamed of it before, but it turned out that Drawing... was such a luxurious kind of happiness.
When he saw the card he Drew in his hand, his spirits lifted further.
Grudgeful Retaliator, Level 4, 1600 ATK.
Normally, it would just be an ordinary monster, but 1600 ATK was life-saving at this moment. Because while Head Zaluug's Effect was annoying, its ATK was only 1400.
Finally, he could take down that annoying thing on the other side that kept making him discard his hand every turn!
Koji Sato couldn't wait. "I summon Grudgeful Retaliator in Attack Position and attack Head Zaluug! Hit it, damn it, die die..."
"Whoa, hold on, buddy, calm down. You're supposed to have fun dueling."
Kira reminded him with a chuckle.
"Also, don't be in such a hurry. It's not the Battle Phase yet. Because at the previous Timing, I activated a Trap Card."
He pointed to a Set Card that had flipped face-up in his backrow.
"Trap Card - Compulsory Evacuation Device. Return one monster on the field to its owner's hand.
I'm returning Grudgeful Retaliator to your hand."
The Trap activated, and the cursed doll holding an axe, before its feet could even get steady, immediately turned into a golden light and flew back into Koji Sato's hand.
Koji Sato: "."
This was his only Hand.
And he had just used up his one and only Normal Summon for this turn.
So obviously, he had no cards left to play.
What was going to happen next was obvious. He couldn't do anything but end his turn, then that accursed Zaluug would attack him again and make him Discard his last Hand as well.
Oh wait, he wouldn't even make it to that point. Because his Life Points were only 1200, one more hit would finish him off.
However, Kira ultimately didn't manage to make Koji Sato's Life Points Reach Zero.
Because before the next turn arrived...
During the Duel, Koji Sato attempted a Direct Attack on the opposing Duelist but failed, leading the surrounding students who were watching to quickly pull him back, and he was immediately disqualified and ruled as losing.
