An Unfair Duel

"Sanctuary's Protective Barrier, activate!"

Ethereal Blue Flames leaped up, forming a ring that enveloped the Dueling Field.

In what seemed like an instant, the valley collapsed. Billowing dust blotted out the blazing sun as every mountain and boulder came crashing down. The forbidden Valley of the Kings, once slumbering in silence, crumbled beneath nature's might and vanished without a trace.

Blue flames ruled the field. This was the domain of stone.

This card had never received a Physical Card Adaptation. It was the Field Spell Jim had used against the Supreme King in his famous anime debut duel.

"Sanctuary's Protective Barrier is a Field Spell made specifically for Rock-Type Monsters," Jim said. "Within this domain, whenever a Rock-Type Monster is successfully Normal Summoned, it receives one Guardian Counter.

"A monster with a counter can remove that Guardian Counter instead of being destroyed, whether by battle or by a card effect!"

In other words, it gave every Rock-Type Monster an extra life.

Naturally, the field itself was not Jim's true objective. More importantly, the new field had forced out the old one.

This was a rule from early Yu-Gi-Oh!, one that newer players might not be familiar with. Back then, only one Field Spell could exist at a time. Even if the players were not using the same Field Spell Zone, activating a new field would force out the old one.

It was also one of the most common ways to deal with troublesome Field Spells in those days. Forcing out an old field with a new one counted as destruction by game rules, did not start a Chain, and could not be countered.

But that rule had been abandoned for many years. In modern Yu-Gi-Oh!, both players could have a Field Spell on the field without conflicting with each other.
