Academy Island, late at night.
It was deep into the night, when most students had already counted their sheep and gone to bed. Teams of men in black, dressed in standardized combat uniforms and helmets, carried specialized detection equipment as they marched slowly through the forest in orderly formation.
The "KC" emblem representing KaibaCorp was printed across the backs of all their combat uniforms.
This was a reconnaissance team dispatched by KaibaCorp.
Several days had passed since they landed on the island. Their target was a dangerous spirit, and according to the results of their investigations around the island these past few days, the spirit should still have been on the island.
But what was strange was that they had already conducted a carpet search of the island's perimeter over the past few days, yet they still had not found any trace of the spirit. None of the instruments in their hands designed to detect spiritual energy fluctuations had shown the slightest response.
Only high-level spirits had ways to evade detection, and even that was not easy. To completely avoid making any movement that could be picked up by the equipment, that spirit could not make extensive use of its Supernatural Power. The moment the energy fluctuation index exceeded a certain threshold, it would immediately be detected by the nearby reconnaissance teams.
Yet after days of searching, they had not merely failed to catch sight of the spirit—their instruments had not detected even the tiniest abnormal reading.
As the team advanced, a strange rustling suddenly came from the bushes to their side. Two nearby members immediately turned around warily and looked toward the bushes.
But when they slowly approached and parted the branches, they found nothing there.
Well, not exactly nothing. There was a pile left behind.
Rabbit droppings.
