Background / History

Mew is the guardian bound to God Tree Space, a hidden space associated with the Legendary Tree and its divine spring. The spring can restore a Pokémon's injuries and potential, while Mew itself can sense the shifting entrance to the space—a location that even Aura Heroes such as Mark and Lucario cannot pinpoint precisely. 329 427

Despite this responsibility, Mew repeatedly abandons its post to explore the outside world, transform into other beings, and play pranks. Its past antics caused Lucario's memory loss and regression into Riolu, leaving Lucario with lasting resentment. 329

In the future described by Youth Mi Yang, Aya and Lucario locate Mew and persuade it to confront Mewtwo. Mew is severely injured after overexerting itself, while Aya and Lucario exhaust their Aura to save it. Mew subsequently disappears back into God Tree Space to recover and repair the damaged God Tree. 291 383

Mark later discovers that Mew had remained close to his group in disguise. After Jirachi and Victini catch it during a game of hide-and-seek, Mew reveals that the God Tree has only eight months before irreversible damage occurs, forcing it to return. 330 382

Mark arranges for Mew to teach Aura Power, then seeks a lasting solution to its confinement. After mastering Stone Gate Forest's Nature Dance and merging the forest with God Tree Space, Mew gains the freedom to travel between both areas without trapping itself inside the God Tree Space. 389 470 533

Appearance

Mew is a small, pink, kitten-like Pokémon that floats and “swims” through the air. Though it appears smooth and hairless, its body is covered in extremely fine, dense fur that gives it an unusually soft texture. 331 382

  • Pale pink in its ordinary form; turns light blue as Shiny Mew. 526
  • Can freely imitate other Pokémon, including their apparent aura and physical details. 402 551
  • Forest Guardian Form manifests a patterned woven vine ball approximately the size of a tennis ball. 533
  • Often adopts disguises such as Ditto, Pidgey, Leafeon, Steel Eevee, Jirachi, and Mega Gyarados. 330 402 524 527 551

Personality

Mew is willful, playful, and highly mischievous. It enjoys lively places, natural environments, hide-and-seek, and transforming into others to confuse or prank them. It is also a habitual procrastinator, repeatedly delaying its return to God Tree Space until the last possible moment. 329 402 524

Its mischief is usually deliberate rather than reckless: Mew can evade even Mark and Mewtwo during games, yet normally avoids the genuinely dangerous behavior associated with Jirachi. When others are in real danger, it becomes dependable and willing to act. 524 506

Mew dislikes being treated as a pet by strangers and only permits Mark to touch it freely. It is also prone to smugness after successful tricks or public victories. 551 604

Abilities & Skills

Transform

Mew possesses an exceptionally broad transformation ability, described as endless transformation. It can take the form of Pokémon, including Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, and may also imitate human forms. 459 551

  • Can alter its appearance to hide among groups of identical Pokémon, such as more than thirty Pidgey. 524
  • Can reproduce a transformed Pokémon's aura closely enough to confuse observers. 551
  • Has disguised itself as Ling Liushu's Ditto without alerting Caterpie, Golisopod, Jirachi, or Victini. 330
  • Its transformations can be strengthened by Victini's Infinite Energy. 402 633
  • Can change its own coloration, including concealing its Shiny coloration. 526

Upgraded Transform

After becoming Shiny, Mew gains Upgraded Transform, allowing it to use special abilities associated with the Pokémon it becomes. 527

  • As Jirachi, it successfully uses Small Wish to create watercolor pens. 527
  • It can transform into Legendary Pokémon such as Groudon, Kyogre, Ho-Oh, Articuno, Landorus, and Zacian and experiment with their signature powers. 527
  • It can become a stronger Mega Gyarados and use multiple Activated States in battle. 551
  • It can copy a World Devouring Worm after consuming some of its flesh and genes. 593
  • Copied powers may be imperfect; its attempt to use Jirachi's Wish caused weakness and failed. 527
  • Cliff Edge Sword becomes difficult to control against airborne targets because its lock-on effect does not apply. 527

Teleport, Invisibility, and Concealment

Mew can vanish, teleport, and conceal itself with exceptional speed and precision. 331 402

  • Escaped Jirachi and Caterpie so quickly that Caterpie's Mind's Eye could not trace its destination. 331
  • Can remain nearby while evading passive detection abilities, including Mind's Eye and Danger Avoidance. 330
  • Its God Tree Space entrance changes location whenever it opens; only Mew can sense the exact entrance. 427

Aura Power

Mew can grant humans the capacity to wield Aura Power, creating Aura Heroes. 291 390

  • Taught Mark and Leafeon to master Aura Power. 389
  • Could not make Jirachi or Victini Aura Heroes because of the authorities they already possess. 389 390
  • The number of Aura Heroes Mew can create is limited. 390
  • Its Aura affinity allows it to play with and manipulate Aura Spheres. 390

God Tree Guardian Powers

Mew's presence stabilizes and repairs God Tree Space, but this duty traditionally binds it to the space. 525 527

  • Returning to God Tree Space immediately halted its collapse and began repairing it. 525
  • Can open God Tree Space and transport people and Pokémon through it. 524 525
  • Leaving the space by force previously required overdraw, risking irreversible bodily damage. 527
  • After merging God Tree Space with Stone Gate Forest, it regains practical freedom of movement. 533

Forest Guardian Form

Mew's Forest Guardian Form is linked to its successful merger of God Tree Space and Stone Gate Forest. 533

  • Controls its vine ball as naturally as a limb.
  • Can enlarge or shrink the vine ball.
  • Uses the ball to release Grass-type moves with properties Mew itself cannot fully explain. 533

Combat Capability

Mew is an extremely powerful established Mythical Pokémon and a living Pokémon encyclopedia capable of using moves with ease. 383 533

  • A newly born Mewtwo would normally be unable to match it; Mew's apparent parity with Mewtwo resulted from prior overdraw and injury. 383
  • While weakened, it fought Mewtwo evenly through repeated Telekinesis clashes. 525
  • Can use powerful transformations tactically, as shown by its defeat of Tiger's Mega Gyarados. 551
  • Is willing to intervene decisively to save others, including rescuing Celebi from Glastrier. 506

Relationships

  • Mark — Ally, caretaker, and Aura student. Mark helps pursue Mew's freedom from God Tree Space, while Mew trusts him enough to wake when he touches it. 383 425 533
  • Jirachi — Close friend, frequent playmate, and rival in pranks. Jirachi's growth motivates Mew to train secretly. 457 527
  • Victini — Companion and occasional victim of Mew's food theft; Victini suspects Mew of stealing its chocolate donuts. 330
  • Aya — Aya's sincerity persuades Mew to confront Mewtwo. Aya later sacrifices her Aura to save the injured Mew. 291 525
  • Lucario — Mew caused Lucario's memory loss and regression into Riolu, creating resentment between them; Lucario later aids the search for Mew. 329 331
  • Mewtwo — Initially an adversary. Mew confronts the rampaging Mewtwo and later participates in Mark's plan surrounding their historical battle. 525 526
  • Shaymin — Shaymin can free Mew from God Tree Space through spatial travel, though Mark initially withholds this information to make Mew practice Nature Dance seriously. 457 527
  • Phione — Phione can distinguish Mew from a genuine Leafeon through its aura sense, despite Mew's disguise. 402
  • Celebi — Mew saves Celebi from Glastrier and later plays alongside it in Clear Stream Village. 506 527

Trivia

  • Mew enjoys festivals primarily because they are lively; the Mew Festival itself has no special meaning to it. 402
  • It is described as having a condition similar to human ADHD, though it does not intend harm. 506
  • Mew is exceptionally soft to touch due to nanoscale fur, surpassing even Jirachi in Mark's assessment. 382
  • It does not like electronic games and fell asleep while Jirachi and Bulbasaur Sage played a mobile game. 425
  • Mew once pranked powerful-looking Dark-type Pokémon with a Lunar Wing, then encountered Giratina and became afraid of returning to that continent. 386
