Evernight Port had been completely swallowed by darkness, leaving only the shimmering lights rising and falling on the water.
Standing by the window, Yarman's brow creased with worry as he let out a soft sigh.
"Things have been getting more and more unsettled around here lately."
Gang fights, addictive substances, deals of money and power... Good people were either forced into becoming bad or died in despair, whether Velanders or other races.
He had been here for less than a week, yet almost every day he saw something terrible or heard terrible news.
And yet, whenever he opened a newspaper, all he saw were proud Velanders striding from one victory to the next, without a single word about the problems Velanders were facing.
The news and reality were like two parallel lines that never intersected. The more he saw, the more sharply he felt the divide between them.
Sometimes he could not help thinking that it would be wonderful if the Marshal would order someone to deal with this awful settlement. But in reality, the esteemed Marshal probably did not even know there was a place called Evernight Port beneath his feet.

She looped her arms around his neck, kissed his cheek softly, and comforted him in a gentle voice.
"The whole world is like this, let alone here. Don't worry so much about us. We'll take good care of ourselves... and you too. Take care of yourself when you're out there."
