Gu Xiaotong had truly gone mad. She could no longer hear anyone around her. Like an inhuman monster, she viciously rubbed her own face raw, heedless of the pain. Her mind had already collapsed.
A flicker of pity passed through Chu Han's eyes, but it was quickly replaced by indifference.
He had seen scenes like this countless times—madness, tears, despair... Everything about the apocalypse could drive people to breaking point.
Even if Gu Xiaotong had not been infected, there was nothing to be done in her current state. Such fragile mental resilience would not sustain her for long. In the end, she would either go mad or die.
Even if it was torture, she might as well enjoy her final moments before death!
Chu Han regained his usual composure and looked once more at those still alive. A cruel gleam flashed from his eyes. "Who else among you has been bitten or scratched by a zombie?"
With that one sentence, the entire hall fell silent.
No one answered. They stared fearfully at the center of the room, where Zhang Ziyu's corpse lay on the ground, black blood bubbling from his head. The sight of him suddenly turning into a zombie had brutally shocked them. Just moments ago, he had been a living person, quietly cursing this damned world alongside them. Then, in the next instant, he had become a zombie!
Gu Xiaotong was still going mad. She was no longer merely rubbing her face; she had completely lost control, desperately slamming her head against the floor!
The sudden arrival of the apocalypse, zombies everywhere, and seeing someone beside you turn into a zombie were entirely different experiences. No one could accept such a change that shattered the very limits of what they could bear.
"Speak." Chu Han's tone was calm, but in the silent environment, it sounded like the warning signs before a storm. "Which of you has been infected?"
At the same time, the axe in Chu Han's hand lifted slightly, its sharp blade glinting with menace.
"I haven't! I haven't!" one survivor cried, desperately shaking his head.
"Me neither! Those monsters never touched me! Not a single hair!"
"I'm not infected!"
The survivors spoke up one after another. They could all predict what would happen next, and everyone shouted that they had not been infected.
But Chu Han did not believe them.
Lying and concealing the truth were the instinctive reactions of everyone bitten or scratched by zombies. They would not tell anyone, not even their own children, friends, or parents!
"You!" Jia Chunjie suddenly shouted, pointing at a middle-aged man in the crowd. "Didn't a zombie scratch you earlier? I saw it!"
The middle-aged man's eyes instantly turned bloodshot as he cursed furiously, "Bullshit! You fat bastard, are you trying to get me killed?"
"You're the one trying to get us killed!" Jia Chunjie's eyes were equally red. He stared fixedly at the man before him, his voice suppressing the fear in his heart. "I saw it! You've been infected!"
"Fuck! I'll kill you!" the middle-aged man roared, throwing a punch at Jia Chunjie.
The two soon began grappling with each other, neither showing the slightest mercy. Each wanted nothing more than to kill the other on the spot.
Yet not a single person around them stepped forward to break up the fight. They all kept a certain distance from one another, silently guarding against each other.
"Blech—cough, cough, cough!" Gu Xiaotong suddenly vomited a mouthful of black blood. She collapsed on the ground, her body convulsing without end, while the skin on her body gradually lost its color at a rate visible to the naked eye.
Chu Han's lips pressed into a thin line. The infection was already accelerating. Gu Xiaotong had begun turning into a corpse so quickly.
Jia Chunjie and the middle-aged man stopped fighting at the same time. Everyone stared at Gu Xiaotong, watching helplessly as her body continued to convulse and mouthful after mouthful of black blood gushed from her mouth like a fountain.
Panic thoroughly spread through every person's heart.
"Pfft—" Another mouthful of black blood sprayed out. Gu Xiaotong's throat produced a sound that no longer resembled a human voice, like a beast being strangled.
It was like an alarm bell striking every one of them.
"I'm sorry." Chu Han's expression remained calm as he raised the axe high.
Bang—
He brought it down viciously on Gu Xiaotong's head, as direct and decisive as when he killed zombies, without the slightest hesitation.
Gu Xiaotong could not be saved. She had to die.
Shang Jiudi turned her head away, forcibly suppressing the urge to vomit.
After sighing, Chen Shaoye's gaze suddenly became resolute. He had to survive!
Eighteen, however, seemed deep in thought, her gaze lingering on the puddle of black blood Gu Xiaotong had vomited onto the floor.
"Those who have been bitten or scratched can decide for yourselves. I won't deprive you of your final choice." After saying that, Chu Han carried his axe and headed for the door.
Chen Shaoye, Eighteen, and Shang Jiudi immediately followed.
"Wait for me!" Jia Chunjie suddenly hurried after them, his expression especially eager. "I'll follow you! I'm not infected—you can check!"
Chu Han looked at Jia Chunjie and asked a seemingly unrelated question. "You said you could cook?"
"Yes, yes, yes!" Jia Chunjie nodded frantically. "I can manage finances too, and I understand allocation!"
Chu Han tilted his head. "Then follow me."
"Ah! Thank you! Thank you!" Jia Chunjie was so moved that he nearly burst into tears, as if he wanted to call Chu Han his father.
Without looking back, Chu Han strode outside. What happened to the others was none of his concern.
On the highway, the towering G55 sped ahead, followed closely by two cars.
This was the seventh day since the apocalypse began. A week was enough to completely overturn the entire world. The apocalypse had arrived without warning, instantly throwing the world into disorder. Things people had once taken for granted vanished one by one, and the rule of law no longer existed.
Looking up at the sky, it was already difficult to see the sun. The sky was no longer azure, and the clouds had vanished completely.
An eerie smog tinged faintly with blood covered everything, omnipresent. It not only made the sky appear gray and murky, but also seemed like a thin mist that obstructed their vision.
The highway had already begun to clog up. What had once been a wide-open road was now nearly impassable. Scattered debris and abandoned vehicles were only the initial obstacles; the continuously pouring-out animals and hordes of zombies were the true culprits making the road so difficult to traverse.
"Pull over and rest," Chu Han ordered through the radio.
The three vehicles pulled over at the roadside. The shattered window at the rear of the G55 had been replaced with a sheet of iron mesh. Though it could not keep out the cold or the wind, at least they would not be ambushed by zombies while parked.
Jia Chunjie had found the iron mesh from who knew where and installed it over the G55's window right away. He was enthusiastic; over the past few days, he had kept busy making hot meals for everyone. When it came to killing zombies, he did not hesitate either, showing no cowardice or fear.
"Brother Chu Han!" Eighteen ran over as soon as she got out of the car. The little girl's smile was pure, especially heartwarming in this dark world, though her next words always left people speechless—
