Swish, swish, swish.

Page after page of the case file was turned. The prescribed interview questions seemed to be finished.

Dong Xuebin felt somewhat stifled after being deliberately put on the spot, but he could not afford to lose his temper and could only grit his teeth in silence.

The tall man tapped the case file with his finger and said nothing for a long while. He had indeed intended to suppress Dong Xuebin's interview score. The day after the written-test results and rough rankings had come out, he had received a call from one of the bureau's leaders. The leader had specifically mentioned the interview a few days later and the name of a young man. Though he had not said exactly what he wanted, the tall man understood. That young man was the leader's nephew, and the leader wanted him to pull some strings and give him a hand.

Sure enough, after looking into it, he found that the young man had ranked fifth in the written test. As long as one person among the top four was eliminated, the fifth-ranked candidate could move up.

The first three candidates had already finished their interviews, and all of them had answered fairly well. Thus, the tall man had chosen the fourth candidate, Dong Xuebin, as his target. For one thing, Dong Xuebin seemed to have no backing and came from an ordinary family. For another, his score was the closest to that of the fifth-ranked candidate. As long as his interview score was ruthlessly pushed down, dropping his overall ranking to sixth or seventh would not be difficult. That was what had led to the scene just now. Both the short man and the woman understood this perfectly well.

But now there was a problem.

Dong Xuebin's interview answers had certainly been mediocre, but there had been no real mistakes. If they utterly ignored the rules and forcibly suppressed his score, the consequences would not be good. If it was investigated afterward, the tall man would not be able to extricate himself either. It was not worth it. So, he set his sights on the final question. As agreed beforehand, the last question in this interview could depart from the prescribed questions, allowing the examiners to come up with one themselves.

Dong Xuebin still did not know that from the moment he had entered the examination room, his failure had seemingly been decided.

"Mm, the final question..." The tall man furrowed his brow in deep thought, tapping the case file.

Just as Dong Xuebin pricked up his ears to listen, scattered footsteps suddenly sounded outside. Several men and women passed the open doorway, chatting and laughing.

A younger girl giggled. "If you're buying one, get an iPhone 4. It's the trendiest one right now."

The slightly older young man said, "I'm still used to using Nokia."

"We should support domestic products," said another man in his thirties.

They were not quiet, and Dong Xuebin and the three examiners all looked over. Once their voices gradually faded into the distance, the tall man, who was closest to the door, walked over and shut it. After a pause, he returned to the desk and said, "Final question. What colors and styles were the clothes and shoes of those people who just passed by?"

"Huh?" Dong Xuebin dug at his ear, thinking he had misheard. "What did you say?"

The tall man impatiently repeated himself. "The colors and styles of their clothes and shoes."

Dong Xuebin froze. His attention had been entirely on the examiners. How could he have noticed anyone else?

The tall man glanced at him. "You can't answer even one?"

The female examiner's expression changed slightly. She opened her mouth as if to speak, then shook her head and said nothing after all.

What kind of question was that? Without any preparation, how could someone remember the colors, even the styles, of another person's clothes after just one glance? This was a major interview exam—who would spare any thought for something like that? It was impossible. They were going too far! Dong Xuebin could not hold back any longer. Gritting his back teeth, he said, "Sorry, but I don't understand what the colors and styles of their clothes and shoes have to do with this interview."

The tall man said expressionlessly, "There are many things being assessed, such as your observation, your memory, and your concentration. Can't answer?" Seeing Dong Xuebin's face turn pale with anger, the tall man quickly wrote something in his notebook. "All right. Go home and wait for notification."

It was over?

Did that mean this position had nothing to do with him anymore?

Damn it, Dong Xuebin's stubbornness flared up too. Fine. You wanted to test his observation? His memory? His concentration? Fine.

Back

The scene before his eyes abruptly changed.

Footsteps pattered. "...Get an iPhone 4. It's the trendiest one right now."

"I'm still used to using Nokia."

"We should support domestic products."

Two men and one woman passed the office doorway once again. Dong Xuebin immediately widened his eyes and stared at them without blinking.

The tall man shut the door, thought for a moment where he stood, then returned and crossed his legs. "Final question. What colors and styles were the clothes and shoes of those people who just passed by?" Of course, he knew the other party could not answer. Even though he had deliberately paid attention just now, he had not clearly seen what shoes they were wearing, much less their styles. Anyone else would be equally stumped.

The female examiner found it a little hard to watch. It would be strange if anyone could answer such an absurd question. But because a leader above had given instructions beforehand, she moved her lips but still did not speak up to stop it.

Dong Xuebin shut his eyes tightly and did not make a sound.

Seeing this, the tall man said, "Don't know? Mm, then the interview is over. Go home and wait for notification." As he spoke, he was about to write down the score in his notebook.

Dong Xuebin slowly opened his eyes. With lowered eyelids and an indifferent tone, he said, "That girl was wearing an orange cotton camisole on top, a white pleated skirt down to her knees, and gray-and-white High-Heeled Sandals. There was a purple flower on the uppers." Under the astonished gazes of the tall man, the short man, and the female examiner, Dong Xuebin continued, "The man in his thirties wore a coffee-brown-and-white striped T-shirt, with a gold necklace draped at his collar. He wore black dress pants and black pointed patent-leather shoes. There was gray dust on the tips."

The ballpoint pen in the tall man's hand clattered onto the desk, then rolled off the tabletop and onto the floor.

Dong Xuebin took a deep breath and continued, "The last young man wore a casual shirt with an embroidered design. The shirt was pure black, and the design was a dragon. The embroidery used many colors, mainly gold and white. His pants were soft gray jeans. His shoes were Canvas Shoes, brownish yellow on top and grayish white below. The laces were different colors on each side—red on the left shoe and green on the right." Dong Xuebin had worked on his instant memory in order to cheat on the Civil Servants written test. Even after several days without using it, he had not lost the skill. He looked up at them. "...Mm, that concludes my answer."

Without another word, the tall man got up and rushed out through the door.

Three minutes later, he returned to the office in a daze. When the female examiner and the short man gave him questioning looks, he nodded absentmindedly.

The female examiner and the short man both sucked in a cold breath.

The tall man looked at Dong Xuebin as though he were a monster. "Mm, very good. You... mm... go home and wait for notification."

Dong Xuebin stood and bowed politely to them. "Thank you, examiners."

Once Dong Xuebin had left, the tall man lit a cigarette and took two deep drags. "Well, I've learned something today."

"Tell me about it." The short man gave a wry smile. "I never expected such a godlike person to exist. How did he remember all that?"

"I'd like to know too." The female examiner sighed in amazement. "Without knowing beforehand, he only glanced at them a few times, yet he remembered even the colors of their shoelaces and whether there was dirt on their shoe tips? This can't be described as merely having a good memory or careful observation anymore. That's just incredible, isn't it?"
