Night fell.
Hotel.
Room 8603.
Fang Wenping sipped her wine and said, "What were you doing just now?"
Dong Xuebin gave an "oh." "Watching the news, browsing the web."
"Why weren't you asleep?" Fang Wenping's glass was empty, so she poured herself another.
"I don't know what's going on either. I was lying down, but I just couldn't fall asleep. Maybe I've been a little insomniac lately." Dong Xuebin took a sip of wine. "A little alcohol is perfect. It helps with sleep."
Fang Wenping said, "Aren't you tired after beating up all those people?"
"A little tired, sure, but it was nothing." Dong Xuebin bragged.
Fang Wenping looked him over. "With that little body of yours, how are you so good at fighting?"
Dong Xuebin said, "I trained."
Fang Wenping hummed. "Cheers."
"Cheers." Dong Xuebin clinked glasses with her.
Then the room fell silent for a while. Neither of them spoke, mainly because neither knew what to talk about. Their relationship had never been particularly good; it was complicated. Calling them enemies would fit, since their families really had been political rivals, fighting each other for years. Fang Wenping and Dong Xuebin's side had also clashed badly over Fang Shuiling. But this time, Fang Wenping had handled Dong Xuebin's transfer and done him a huge favor, so they could not exactly be called enemies either. Yet friends? Even less so. Other than that night on the second day of the Lunar New Year, when Fang Wenping had gotten drunk and chattered away, she and Dong Xuebin had practically never had a normal conversation. Anyway, their relationship was a complete mess.
Two minutes later.
Fang Wenping finally frowned. "Find something to talk about."
"Me?" Dong Xuebin gave a wry smile. "How about movies? What have you been watching lately?"
"I basically don't watch movies, TV dramas, or entertainment programs," Fang Wenping said.
Dong Xuebin blinked. "Then how about current affairs or the economic situation?"
Fang Wenping shifted her legs and changed positions slightly. "Outside of work, I don't want to discuss that."
Dong Xuebin said, "Then let's talk about... alcohol. Right, don't you like drinking? What kind do you like best?"
Dong Xuebin and Fang Wenping had very similar temperaments, but their interests and hobbies could not have been more different. He had finally found a topic and wanted to use it to ease the atmosphere, but Fang Wenping shut it down with a single sentence. "Don't want to talk about that."
Damn!
You're way too hard to please!
You don't want to talk about anything, so what do you want to do?
Dong Xuebin felt like he could not even drink the wine in his hand anymore. There was no other reason—it was just too dull. They had absolutely nothing in common. He could not even get the wine down.
Fang Wenping, meanwhile, drank quite happily by herself. As the alcohol went down, the skin on her body seemed to grow rosier and rosier. Combined with her extremely seductive sitting posture, she looked utterly enchanting.
That Old Enchantress!
What was she doing?
Did she have something bothering her? No way, right?
Dong Xuebin could not help asking, "Do you have something on your mind? If you do, just say it. Don't treat me like an outsider. Or if there's anything you want to get off your chest, you can tell me. You know me—I definitely won't spread it around. Tonight, I'll be your trash can. Just dump whatever you want into me."
Fang Wenping frowned. "Do I look like I have something on my mind?"
It's not that I think so—you obviously do. Otherwise, why would you come to my room in the middle of the night to drink? And you don't want to say anything? Don't want to chat? Then why not drink alone? Why drag me into this? And the key thing... you came here without a bra, practically naked underneath. Aren't you just making it hard for me? What the hell is up with Old Fang today?
That was what he thought, but he could not say it aloud.
Dong Xuebin said, "I was just curious. I didn't mean anything by it."
They were sitting close together. When Fang Wenping moved on the sofa, the sight beneath the collar of her robe swayed before Dong Xuebin's eyes again. It was impossible not to look. A pale, dazzling flash caught his eye, and it seemed like he could see nearly half her chest. It was full and firm, not sagging at all.
Dong Xuebin felt a little hot. Taking advantage of the view, he picked up his glass and gulped down a large cup of wine. That only made him hotter.
This is killing me.
He could only endure it.
After that came another long stretch of silence.
Five minutes...
Ten minutes...
Dong Xuebin could not stand the atmosphere anymore and finally could not wait any longer. "Um, Director Fang, don't we have to get up early and leave tomorrow? It's already one o'clock. If we sleep any later, we won't be able to get up tomorrow. How about we stop drinking and get some rest? Staying up late isn't good for your skin or your health."
Fang Wenping looked at him. "Are you sleepy?"
"Yeah, a little." Dong Xuebin even gave a token yawn to show that he was tired. In reality, he was not sleepy in the slightest. With all that flesh flashing into his vision—an accidental reveal here, another there—he was more alert than ever.
Fang Wenping gave an "oh." "Then go to sleep. I'll finish this wine."
Dong Xuebin said okay and went to the bathroom. He had already brushed his teeth, but he scrubbed them a second time anyway. Seeing that Fang Wenping still had not left, he washed his face too, dragging things out. He could not help it; the atmosphere in the room was too awkward. Dong Xuebin wanted to stay, but he did not dare.
After fussing around for a long time, Dong Xuebin finally came out of the bathroom. Then he froze slightly. Fang Wenping was actually holding the bottle and gulping wine straight into her mouth.
One gulp.
Three gulps.
She drank fast.
Dong Xuebin jumped in fright. "What are you doing?"
Fang Wenping swallowed. "Drinking."
"This isn't drinking." Dong Xuebin truly had no idea what she was up to tonight. "Stop drinking, stop drinking. If you get drunk again, have you forgotten what happened the last time you got drunk? You don't have that kind of tolerance!"
Fang Wenping ignored him. Tilting her head back, she poured the last of the foreign liquor from the bottle into her stomach. She set the bottle down and got off the sofa, but instead of putting on her slippers, she stepped directly onto the carpet with her bare feet. As soon as she stood steady, she swayed. She had clearly drunk too much.
Dong Xuebin was speechless. "Hurry up and sleep."
Fang Wenping gave a hum, yet she actually walked over to the bed in the room and flopped down on it.
Dong Xuebin stared. "Your room is next door. This is my bed."
Fang Wenping lay there without even pulling up the covers, completely motionless. "Mm. Don't want to move."
"Uh, how about I help you over there? Can you get up first?" Seeing that she still did not budge, Dong Xuebin was utterly helpless. "If you sleep here, where am I supposed to sleep?"
Fang Wenping said flatly, "Anywhere."
Huh?
Anywhere?
Until then, Dong Xuebin had not been thinking too much about it, but after hearing that, his whole body shuddered. He stared dumbfoundedly at Fang Wenping, lying disheveled on the bed.
What did that mean?
Was she saying it was fine for me to sleep on the bed too?
Or had she really drunk too much? Blacked out? Did she no longer know what she was saying or doing?
