The female prosecutor held her breath and silently watched the scene before her.

The Colorado River was flooding in this season. Melted ice and snow from the Rocky Mountains had swollen what was ordinarily a placid river basin. In ordinary times, this would not necessarily have been a bad thing; after all, the scorching West Coast and Nevada both needed the river to flood.

For the entire Duchy of California, the Colorado River was practically a mother's umbilical cord. Unfortunately, this continent had never been blessed land. Not long after winning the War of Independence in 1927, the vast Mexican Empire had seized the chance to march north, reclaiming New Mexico and part of Texas, genuinely threatening the Duchy of California's connection to the Colorado Plateau.

But such political messes meant nothing to the prosecutor. What truly concerned her was the vast army of grotesque fiends before her.

In midsummer, the Colorado Plateau should have been a bleak, bloody red. Yet now, both banks of the river valley were packed with black wings and green balefire. Was it one thousand? Five thousand? Or tens of thousands of Outer Domain Demons, entrenched upon the crimson stony shore?

Lowly imps crawled from the polluted earth, swiftly hauling supplies. Bone Demons, their bodies protected by bone armor, erected altars of skeletons under the direction of several blasphemous priests. They shoved prisoners and lambs forward, and amid evil murmurs and maddening chants, flesh and blood melted like boiling chocolate into pools of filthy plasma. Then came the cries and wails of infants as countless demon worms surged out of the blood pools.

Even the dullest fool could see what these Outer Domain Demons intended. Polluting the land with Outworld Wind was not enough for them. They meant to reshuffle everything in the human world,
