Li Aoz truly had not betrayed anyone.
After all, as a transmigrator, he had far too many nationalities.
In his previous life, he had been from Xia Yan; in this life, he was a Frostplate Citizen.
Though he had only one account, Li Aoz had an awful lot of "nationalities."
The Alranka Kingdom, the Red Arrow Empire, the Fiennes Federation, the Galaxy Civilization, the Heroes Empire.
Which homeland were they talking about?
Besides, weren't there even more virtual nationalities, like the Star Alliance, the Holy Terra Empire, the Horde, the Alliance, the Great Wu Territory...? Due to Star Abyss's censorship system, certain words would automatically be altered by the system into meaningless phrases.
Li Aoz was not worried about letting something slip at all.
He had tested it during the days he first arrived in Nethermark. He still could not say or write words such as "Xia Yan" or "America."
Thank the system patch, thank the censors, thank the crab!
Li Aoz had not betrayed his real homeland, so naturally, he was not worried at all about giving himself away through his expression.
No matter how Nimoting interrogated him, Li Aoz answered every question smoothly.
"Where have you been hiding all this time?"
"I was captured by people from Nethermark Humanity. They drew my blood, took my bone marrow, and forced me to take all kinds of medicine. I finally found an opportunity, stole a car, and escaped."
"The records show that you don't have a driver's license. How could you drive?"
"I wasn't the one driving. Another patient who escaped with me drove."
"Who was the woman talking to you?"
"She was Nomi, a test subject at Nethermark Humanity. She drove the car."
"Where is she, then?"
"I don't know what she's doing right now."
Nimoting narrowed her long, narrow eyes.
There was nothing wrong with Li Aoz's answers, and his relaxed expression showed that he was being very candid.
He had not lied, but that was all—he had merely not lied. Interrogation was an art. Li Aoz had not answered where that "Nomi" was; he had only said that he did not know what she was doing "right now."
Li Aoz was right in front of her. That Nomi was not within his sight, so who the hell knew what Nomi was doing "right now"?
Has he received professional anti-interrogation training? Or does he simply believe he hasn't done anything wrong?
She glanced at Agent Ya Wen, who stood on the slope behind her.
According to this young lady's investigation, as well as the results of interrogating the human smugglers and driver, Li Aoz had personally stated that he was connected to the Rose Army. He had also handed his personal phone to the driver in exchange for a cigarette pack, only to return the cigarettes.
That behavior itself was highly suspicious... But a cigarette pack could serve purposes other than holding cigarettes—for example, writing, passing intelligence, or acting as a marker to point out a target to others.
Li Aoz's mental fortitude was exceptionally strong. Ordinary people should have been terrified upon seeing a superhuman—but he had just escaped from a laboratory.
As for Nethermark Humanity, she knew a little about it too. She only remembered that the organization's leader was not quite normal.
The more she questioned him, the stranger it seemed. Li Aoz's behavior had been flawless, and everything seemed understandable, but what normal person would think of running to the Outland?
Couldn't he see the desolation everywhere? He doesn't seem like Rose Army. Could he be from the Empire, or Sky Ring?
It was somewhat impossible for the Rose Army to cultivate someone like this. Li Aoz spoke with measured cadence and complete conviction, and he said he had not betrayed his country—the Rose Army had not even established a country, so aside from Frostplate, what country could he have betrayed?
A security guard from a border village, with a vocational secondary school education, who had understood nothing as recently as yesterday—how could he possibly remain so calm and composed?
Most importantly, according to the lie detector, he truly loved his country!
Nimoting was no longer considering the Rose Army. In her experience, even the Four Nations themselves would find it difficult to cultivate someone like this.
While Nimoting grew more confused with every question, Li Aoz became increasingly at ease.
Li Aoz knew Nimoting's personality and weaknesses all too well.
Li Aoz had an assassin friend who later became a flanker in the professional league. Back when he encountered Nimoting's quest, the final battle had disgusted him so much that, in order to study Nimoting, he brought Li Aoz and a group of streamers to raid Law Enforcement Division Four's headquarters and steal her files.
In the files, the Frostplate Government had evaluated Nimoting with great seriousness:
"...She is not very bright and lacks some basic common sense. At the same time, her education level is too low, only reaching high school. She rose through the ranks entirely on the strength of her personal Combat Power. This person is unsuitable for infiltration work. Her organizational ability is extremely poor, and she is utterly incapable of reconciling a team's emotions and conflicts. However, her individual Combat Power is considerable. Sending her to suppress riots would be an excellent choice."
With all the information in hand, they had even dug up Nimoting's bank card password. Later, the Walkthroughs for nearly every assassin's Main Quest were written based on the files they had decrypted.
Nimoting really could fight, and she really was stupid.
After Li Aoz answered everything fluently, Nimoting found herself in a difficult position.
As a brute who only handled beating unruly civilians and suppressing the Rose Army and strikes, she had never seen anyone so cooperative.
The key was that she clearly knew something was wrong with him, yet she could not pry out a single useful detail.
After questioning him for a while, Nimoting had overloaded her pig brain with questions. She calmed down and realized she could not keep doing this.
Li Aoz was shivering from the cold, and he did not look like he was trying to stall for time.
After a long while, she finally thought of one possibility: Could Li Aoz be an undercover agent from another country?
So she began beating around the bush, asking questions about ethnic culture.
Li Aoz found it amusing. He had spent two versions on Azure Planet; even if he did not check the official site every day, Dou Shou, Kuai Yin, BiliBili, and all sorts of other information sources in daily life had made him extremely familiar with Azure Planet's various cultures.
He might not remember much of the plot if asked, but he remembered all kinds of delicious food, beautiful women, and stunning scenery quite clearly.
After a round of questioning, Li Aoz, someone born in the Red Arrow Empire, somehow left Nimoting wondering whether she herself was a Frostplate Citizen.
While Nimoting was still agonizing over it, Li Aoz had already relaxed. After discussing so much Frostplate folk culture, he was reminded of his past life in the Red Arrow Empire.
Relaxation helped resist interrogation, especially with an idiot like Nimoting. If you pushed her too hard, she would go straight to torture and forced confession.
Li Aoz's Charm was very high. His words naturally carried warmth and appeal, making people unconsciously trust and like him, and listen to what he had to say.
He was in no hurry. Nomi was not Qiu Ran, and her understanding of vehicles was nowhere near as thorough. The more time he could buy for Nomi, the better.
To keep himself relaxed, he began reminiscing about the past.
Of the Four Nations, the Red Arrow Empire was still the one Li Aoz missed most. A large part of that was because the Empire treated its citizens very well and offered plenty of room for advancement. As long as you worked hard, you would definitely receive the rewards you deserved.
Though in truth, none of the Four Nations were good, the Empire had still left him with quite a few wonderful memories.
Moreover, most people who had experienced the Red Arrow Empire storyline in Version 2.0 would develop a sense of kinship with it.
It was a great nation that had endured countless hardships and setbacks—ceding territory, paying reparations, suffering invasion and foreign rule, watching its homeland sink beneath the waves—yet still remained unyielding. Led by the resilient backbone of its people, it had marched toward revival and prosperity.
What was more, the Empire's domineering style and its powerfully imposing national development were immensely appealing in their own right, especially in its culture and music.
"Since that's the case," Nimoting said, "sing the National Anthem of your great motherland."
Without a moment's hesitation, Li Aoz sang:
"From Eerga Coast to Davalun Peak, Scarlet Arrow, ever onward—"
The next instant, Nimoting immediately raised her prosthetic body. A gun barrel sprang from her palm and aimed at Li Aoz's forehead.
"Fuck, you Imperial dog!"
