Well, perhaps it should be said that all humans were bewildered by the future. Even when they had already done everything they could and had no strength left to spare, they would still make some prediction about the future in their minds. It might be positive, or it might be negative, and those positive or negative factors would spur on or hinder their current actions.
This was no great discovery. Ronan merely felt more keenly that humans and Genetic Species truly possessed no particular specialness.
The deputy directors and mid-level staff of the High-Energy Center around him were already among the elite of the colonial system, yet the vortexes of their emotions and desires were fundamentally made of the same stuff as the busy, irritable people in the Mud Pit of the West Suburbs. Faced with hardship and uncertainty, they produced no greatly different reactions.
Demon Rune lazily lay down atop this network of human hearts, whose basic outline had already taken shape. It had seemed quite excited when it first began weaving the web, but once the basic structure was complete, its interest instead faded.
Perhaps that was because all it had left to do was repeat the process endlessly.
Ronan, however, remained utterly engrossed.
On Demon Rune's back, the phantom of his soul continued to twist. Part of it seeped out and merged into this "spiderweb," allowing him to experience more deeply the turbid current of hearts unique to Genetic Species, sensing its components, flow, and resonance.
He had never had this experience before, because he had merely borrowed Demon Rune's power rather than truly understanding and applying it.
