Background / History

Qing Lin was born with mixed human and Snake People blood. Green snake scales on her hand marked her as different, and she was driven into an alley, isolated and treated as a monster by townspeople. At the time Gu He found her, she was cold, malnourished, fearful of being struck, and unable to understand the concept of hating others. 66

Gu He accepted her scales without disgust, called them beautiful, and explained that the hatred directed at her was displaced resentment toward the Snake People rather than any fault of her own. He took her in as his maid so that she could have a defined place and a sense of personal worth, while intending to teach her cultivation rather than ordinary servant training. 66

Her experience as a victim of both human and Snake People prejudice made her hope for peace between the two sides. She rejected the idea of annihilating either race and remembered Gu He's belief that a sufficiently powerful leader might restrain both peoples and prevent new hatred from forming. 67
