That evening, Chen Mo came out of the laboratory and was about to head to the mess hall for dinner when he happened to run into Colonel Phillips coming toward him.
"Back to being the doctor's guinea pig?" The Colonel looked Chen Mo up and down.
"Just look at you!"
"My best soldier is practically being turned into a bookworm like that old man!"
After venting for a while, Colonel Phillips looked at Chen Mo and asked skeptically, "So? Can you still lift a gun now?"
Chen Mo glanced down at his white lab coat and the several thick biology books in his arms, then responded to the Colonel's sharp tongue with a helpless smile.
Colonel Phillips was a soldier through and through, and what soldiers valued most was strength. Chen Mo's consistently outstanding performance had earned his high regard. His powerful physique, sharp perception, and clever mind, along with his unimaginably formidable combat skills and marksmanship, made him the perfect Super Soldier in the Colonel's eyes.
Yet this combat genius had not only been dragged into the laboratory every day to serve as the doctor's guinea pig, but had later been transferred directly to become the doctor's assistant. Colonel Phillips felt as though a precious gem had been cast into the mud, wasting such talent. Every time he saw Chen Mo, he could not help but complain.
"Ready for your inspection anytime, Colonel."
"How about we compete again?"
"I feel like I've really gotten worse lately."
Chen Mo looked at Colonel Phillips with utter sincerity.
The Colonel's face reddened slightly, and he immediately put on a stern expression as he barked, "Get the hell out of here! Get out of my sight this instant!"
The last competition had dealt the Colonel a heavy blow. He had never mentioned shooting contests again, yet Chen Mo had carelessly steered the conversation back to it.
In truth, the Colonel was quite satisfied with Chen Mo. No commander disliked a powerful soldier, and he usually took good care of him. The only condition was that they did not mention shooting contests. That was the Colonel's eternal pain.
"Well then, Colonel, your finest soldier is off to do something very important."
Chen Mo waved to the Colonel, then turned and strode away with the books in his arms.
Watching Chen Mo's retreating figure, the Colonel could not help but smile.
"That brat!"
After bidding farewell to the Colonel, Chen Mo arrived at the cafeteria.
As for the very important task he had mentioned, naturally, it was filling his stomach.
He had barely taken two bites after sitting down with his meal when a lovely figure suddenly sat across from him.
"I heard the Colonel roaring just now. Did you annoy him again?"
Agent Carter, dressed in uniform, still looked as valiant and striking as ever.
"I reminded him of some unpleasant memories."
Chen Mo shook his head as he ate.
Carter could not help laughing. She had served as the referee during their shooting contest and had witnessed the entire process of Chen Mo utterly crushing the Colonel. Opportunities to see the Colonel embarrassed were rare.
"Training today?" Carter was rather interested in Throwing Knives as well.
"Tonight, I'm giving Steve some extra lessons. I heard he's started slacking off lately. During today's endurance run, he got halfway through, left the instructor and his teammates behind, and came back in your car by himself."
When Chen Mo mentioned it, Carter recalled the instructor's utterly bewildered expression at the time and could not help laughing again.
"He's smart."
"He couldn't be my disciple if he were too dumb." If Steve had not been intelligent and talented, and one of the Super Heroes Chen Mo rather liked, Chen Mo would never have put so much effort into teaching him.
Steve finished training rather late. After hurriedly shoveling down a few bites of food, he ran to the training ground to find Chen Mo.
"Master! I'm late!" Steve shouted as he ran. But when he got closer and saw that Agent Carter was there as well, he suddenly fell silent, growing embarrassed.
"Agent Carter, you're here too."
When Carter saw Steve, she gave him a friendly smile.
Chen Mo and Steve had both made a good impression on Carter. As a sexy, beautiful, independent, and strong woman, Carter was deeply annoyed by the men around her who lusted after her beauty while looking down on her abilities. They always thought women should stay home, raise children, do housework, and serve men. That was something she could not accept.
Yet she could sense that the way Chen Mo and Steve looked at her was clear and pure, without the slightest hint of desire—only appreciation. They sincerely respected her and did not belittle her because she was a woman. It made Carter feel respected and accepted, and she felt comfortable around them.
The difference was that she could sense Chen Mo's appreciation for her was simple and untainted by romantic feelings. He regarded her as a friend.
Steve, on the other hand, had the shy awkwardness of a young man around her. During training, he would often secretly glance at her like the other soldiers. But unlike their lecherous stares, Steve's gaze carried a trace of innocent affection, and Carter did not find it unpleasant.
On an open patch of ground beside the camp, Chen Mo began teaching Steve while Carter stood nearby, watching with great interest.
"When you throw a punch, the power must come from the soles of your feet. Drive with your legs, twist your hips, roll your shoulders. The force travels through your spine to your arm, then erupts at the instant you strike your opponent."
"On the battlefield, this isn't a street brawl. You won't have time to slowly wear down your opponent, and the enemy won't surrender just because you knock them to the ground. So remember: always target the enemy's vital points. Defeat them in one move, finish them as quickly as possible, and do not give them a chance to strike back."
After Chen Mo finished instructing Steve, he let him practice on his own and turned toward Carter. While he had been explaining things to Steve, Chen Mo had noticed that she had listened even more attentively than Steve. She seemed very interested.
Seeing Chen Mo look her way, Carter suddenly met his eyes and said, "I challenge you!"
As a senior agent, Carter had received highly formal training. She was proficient in close-quarters combat and skilled in fighting with all kinds of weapons, including firearms and knives.
Some of what Chen Mo had explained to Steve, she could understand, but much of it remained unclear to her. She was very curious just how strong Chen Mo's combat abilities truly were. Carter was very confident in her own skills and wanted to test him personally.
Chen Mo was momentarily taken aback, then smiled and nodded.
"Sure, but first, you have to defeat Steve."
Carter turned to look at Steve, who was practicing with complete focus. He had not noticed what Chen Mo had just said and was still training by himself, absorbing what Chen Mo had taught him.
Only then did Carter remember Chen Mo's monstrous physical abilities. Even if he stood still, she probably could not beat him. She had been so focused on fighting techniques that she had nearly forgotten that point. Hearing his words, she quickly nodded and took the way out he had offered.
"Fine. Then I'll fight Steve first."
As she spoke, she turned toward Steve.
Still immersed in his own world, Steve suddenly felt a burning gaze fall upon him. When he came back to his senses, he found that his goddess, Agent Carter, was looking at him full of fighting spirit.
"What is it?" Steve's heart sped up under Carter's gaze as he asked timidly.
"Fight me." Carter was direct.
"This..." Steve was at a loss. Being suddenly told to fight the goddess in his heart left him unsure what to do, and he instinctively looked to Chen Mo for help.
"Agent Carter wants to spar with you. Don't hold back. Give it everything you've got," Chen Mo explained.
Encouraged by Chen Mo's gaze, Steve nodded despite himself.
"All right, Agent Carter. Let's stop at the right point."
After saying that, Steve solemnly clasped his hands together and bowed to Carter, leaving her somewhat baffled. It was a habit Steve had developed while studying with the Boxing Masters at the Martial Arts School. Whenever he sparred with his junior brothers, he would first clasp his hands and bow.
Carter took off her military jacket. The shirt beneath clung tightly to her body, stretched taut by her full figure.
After handing the jacket to Chen Mo, Carter walked over and stopped in front of Steve. She nodded to signal that they could begin.
Steve secretly glanced at Carter's figure, then immediately blushed and hurriedly looked away.
