The elderly gatekeeper let Zhang Heng in without the slightest suspicion.

Zhang Heng headed toward the gymnasium, but after reaching the second floor and confirming that no one was around, he climbed out the window and jumped straight into the adjacent classroom building.

The students had long since gone home after school, and the silent corridors were completely empty.

Through the glass, he could see the desks and chairs inside, the blackboard and teacher's platform, and the bulletin boards on the walls.

To protect citizens' privacy, previous news reports had not mentioned the drowned child's name, referring to her only as Lin Moumou. But that was no obstacle for Zhang Heng. Based on her age, he could roughly determine her grade. After finding the appropriate floor, he pressed himself against the windows and peered into the classrooms one by one.

Before long, he found an unusually clean empty desk. There were no books on it at all, only a bouquet of white lilies.

Zhang Heng looked up at the sign by the door: Grade 5, Class 4. He then used his transit card to pry open the classroom door and stepped inside. There was nothing much left at the desk itself. Lin Sisi's family had probably come to the school and taken her belongings away after the incident. The white lilies had been bought later by her classmates with class funds and had clearly been there for some time.

The bulletin board at the back, however, proved somewhat helpful.

After Lin Sisi drowned, her classmates had made a memorial-themed bulletin board for her. Zhang Heng found her full name on it—Lin Sisi—as well as many memories her classmates had written about her.

They described how helpful she was and how she excelled both academically and morally.

Zhang Heng skipped over
