Chapter 806: Peacemaker
The second day of gladiatorial performances ended peacefully, without incident or any twists.
Basically, all the gladiators previously considered strong contenders made it onto the roster for the final battles on the third day. Only ten differed from the predictions made before the performances began.
Gladiators from the schools within the city occupied the vast majority of spots on the roster, while outside the city, aside from exceptionally gifted fighters like The Giant Theophilus, only a dozen or so made it into the final roster.
This result came as quite a surprise to the gladiators from outside the city. As the unlucky fellow who had provoked Saturnilos that night and gotten his nose smashed had said, these outside gladiators traveled everywhere to perform and challenge local experts, so their practical combat experience should have been richer than that of the "pampered" gladiators inside the city. Their living conditions were also harsher, which should have toughened them more.
But reality was merciless.
The ones holding the overwhelming advantage were precisely those "toys for noblewomen and young ladies" whom they had originally looked down upon.
Yet this was actually quite normal. The gladiators in the city schools lived far better than those outside the city, so naturally they had more time for training instead of wasting it traveling back and forth. They received better nutrition, had stronger bodies, and even had dedicated physicians to treat their injuries and illnesses.
Of course, the most important point was that gladiators in the city generally commanded higher prices than those outside. On average, one city gladiator was worth two outside gladiators.
Thus, slave traders were naturally more willing to sell better, sturdier gladiatorial prospects to the city's gladiator schools. Some famous outside gladiators were even sold by their owners to city schools
