Habitus ultimately failed to dodge Bach's full-force downward slash. His three remaining fingers could no longer hold the shield, and it flew from his grasp.
But what filled Habitus with shock and fury was that Bach showed no intention of stopping. Instead, he stepped closer and slashed at Habitus's head. Left with no choice, Habitus could only temporarily abandon his plan of dropping his weapon and surrendering. He blocked the blow with the shortsword in his left hand while pulling back slightly.
Yet just as he thought he had finally earned a chance to surrender, the German's next shameless move left him completely stunned.
Bach tossed his small round shield aside as well, then charged forward again with only his sword in hand, looking as energetic as ever.
Habitus's scalp went numb. Fearing that the spectators might demand his execution after he surrendered, he had no choice but to keep fighting.
