Memories and Interrogation
The two captured assassins proved far more tight-lipped than many had expected.
The dungeon guards tried every method imaginable, yet failed to make them talk. But it did nothing to spoil Klind's good mood. He and Zhang Heng were sitting in the guardroom now, eating freshly roasted suckling pig while listening to the screams drifting from the interrogation chamber at the end of the corridor.
"Interesting." Klind set down his knife and fork. "I doubt Autrus ever imagined that after his death, I would be the one helping track down his murderer."
Klind had originally thought Zhang Heng would remain silent, since the latter had barely spoken since coming to the dungeon with him. He had simply sat there alone with his eyes closed, apparently lost in thought.
Klind assumed Zhang Heng had been thrown into panic by Autrus's death. After all, during the earlier remonstrance incident, Zhang Heng had not chosen to stand with him, making it easy for Klind to suspect that Zhang Heng had secretly sided with Autrus instead. Yet Zhang Heng's new patron had shown himself for less than half a day before dropping dead.
Thus, Klind felt he could understand Zhang Heng's grief at the moment. But to his surprise, Zhang Heng opened his eyes and asked, "When did you meet Autrus?"
"Hmm, about four years ago." Klind was in a good mood and did not mind answering. In fact, he needed someone to help him recall the most difficult opponent he had encountered in his life, so he readily said, "I had just begun serving His Majesty then. We were still fighting those damned Germanic tribes by the Rhine River. His Majesty mentioned a man named Autrus to me, saying he was clever and sufficiently loyal, but I had never met
