Background

Da Niu grew up in the same Heilongjiang village as Fan Yu and is three years his senior. The two were inseparable from childhood; Da Niu protected Fan Yu in fights with children from neighboring villages, and the pair became known throughout the surrounding area. Chen Ergou—later Chen Yushu—was their third close companion. Within the group, Da Niu was considered the muscle, while Fan Yu led and Chen Ergou made plans. 140 216

He practiced a family martial art from a young age, beginning Baji Quan at roughly five or six. Fan Yu later recalls seeing him train against huge trees and temper his body with sand as a child. 160 230 241

Da Niu's father died when he was young. He chose not to enlist in the army because he could not leave his widowed mother alone, remaining in the village to support her instead. 141

Before moving to Magic City, Da Niu spent more time than anyone else in the village caring for Second Uncle-Grandpa. When the elder was hospitalized, he waited with Fan Yu outside the ICU and blamed himself for not noticing Second Uncle-Grandpa's declining mobility sooner. 140 141

Fan Yu arranged for Da Niu and his mother to move to Magic City after Second Uncle-Grandpa's condition stabilized. Shortly afterward, Fan Yu witnessed Da Niu's Baji Quan during a sparring match and hired him as his bodyguard. 142 160

Da Niu is straightforward, loyal, and unpretentious. He regards Fan Yu as both his boss and his lifelong brother, follows his orders directly, and measures his role as bodyguard in simple terms: Fan Yu tells him whom to protect or fight, and he acts. 160 191

He enjoys a difficult fight and becomes visibly excited when facing a capable opponent, but he is not reckless toward those he respects. He maintains the etiquette taught by his father toward martial arts elders, even when he is overwhelmingly stronger than them. 230 376
