Murphy soon read some unwelcome news from the man's mind.
The Magic Research Institute had fallen.
More precisely, several undercover wizards had seized control of it.
Kingsley Shacklebolt and Crouch had long suspected that Murphy had a secret base, so when Murphy recruited wizards through the Wizard Security Store, they had sent trainee Aurors to infiltrate it.
They were capable, but had yet to register as full-fledged Aurors. Most were also recent graduates, which met Murphy's hiring requirements.
Meanwhile, Kingsley had learned from his previous failed infiltration. Not only did he refrain from assigning these agents missions or having them send back intelligence, he even used a Memory Charm on them, sealing away their memories of being undercover agents.
These undercover agents did not know they were undercover agents. Even Legilimency would have struggled to expose them.
And so, like any other outstanding employees, they had been brought into the Magic Research Institute.
They had served Murphy loyally right up until today.
To awaken these deeply embedded agents, Kingsley had extracted their sealed memories and placed them inside small Remembralls capable of storing memories, which he had them carry with them.
Each Remembrall had been given an activation spell and linked to a paired control device. The latter could remotely control the Remembrall, making it release its memories and awaken the agent at any time.
Even Murphy had not anticipated such an ingenious infiltration method.
Once awakened, they had immediately received the Aurors' counterattack orders over the radio. The Aurors ordered them to seize Murphy's base and open its doors to welcome their arrival.
But... when they tried to do so, they suddenly discovered a problem.
They apparently, somehow, actually could not betray Murphy...
They instinctively resisted any unauthorized act that would reveal the Magic Research Institute to anyone else.
