Background / History
Little Barty is the son of Mr. and Madam Crouch. Before Lucretia joined the household, he sought his father's attention through academic achievement and successful spellwork, but became resentful after feeling that his efforts went unrecognized. Winky recalls that he was once more open with her, particularly when ill, but that he had become withdrawn by the time Lucretia arrived. 23
When Lucretia is adopted into the Crouch family, Barty receives her with forced politeness and barely concealed disgust. He resents being expected to welcome a girl of unknown origin, particularly when her arrival coincides with his father finally giving him a long-desired copy of Advanced Dark Arts Defense Theory. 16
His initial suspicion leads him to eavesdrop on Lucretia and Winky, whom he believes Lucretia may be trying to manipulate. He even places a spell on the carpet to embarrass Lucretia, hoping to expose her supposed pretense. 23 Over time, however, her consistent kindness—especially toward Winky—forces him to reconsider his assumptions.
By the time Lucretia begins at Hogwarts, Barty has become one of her closest protectors. He watches for threats around her, shares his knowledge and resources, and works with Regulus Black to support her studies and investigate dangers surrounding the Crouch family. 217 253 300
Appearance
Little Barty is a tall teenager with pale gray eyes, slightly disheveled hair, and an often controlled or cold expression. 16
- Usually wears neat, dark casual clothes outside Hogwarts. 16
- Wears Hogwarts robes while at school. 50
- His pale gray eyes readily reveal emotions he tries to suppress, including disgust, anger, concern, and pride. 16 253
- His ears visibly redden when embarrassed, especially after acts of kindness toward Lucretia are noticed. 50 253 307
Personality
Barty is intelligent, guarded, and intensely proud. His early hostility toward Lucretia stems from resentment, insecurity, and distrust rather than simple cruelty: he assumes her compassion is a calculated performance because he has seen social climbers use vulnerability and politeness to gain favor. 23
He is blunt and intimidating in public, particularly toward people he considers threats to his family. His confrontation with Peter Pettigrew, response to Rosier's confession, and readiness to retaliate against those who target Lucretia demonstrate both his aggressiveness and his refusal to be manipulated. 10 23
Despite this harsh exterior, Barty is attentive and practical in his care for Lucretia. He notices her fading scars, reminds her to use ointment, provides study aids and flying equipment, learns about her magical difficulties, and stays near Ravenclaw Tower until he knows she has returned safely. 50 253 300 311 His protectiveness can become overbearing, but he generally supports her making her own decisions. 28
Abilities & Skills
Spell Control and Combat Magic
Barty possesses unusually refined control for his age. James Potter identifies Barty's delayed-trigger Leg-Locker Curse as magic requiring control at approximately a sixth-year level. 22
- Casts and modifies delayed-trigger curses with precise timing. 22
- Is familiar with defensive magic and teaches Lucretia basic defensive spells. 327
- Reacts quickly in confrontations, immediately drawing his wand on Rosier after her forced confession. 23
- Uses a training dummy to test the defensive properties of the Oval Amulet against progressively stronger spells. 344
Transfiguration and Magical Crafting
Barty contributes form control and magical force to collaborative transfiguration projects with Lucretia and Regulus. His instinct is initially to dominate the magic rather than cooperate with it, requiring Regulus to help him moderate his intensity. 344
- Controls the structural form of the group’s leaf talisman. 344
- Helps create an Oval Amulet with Lucretia and Regulus. 344
- Prepares specialized golden-red oak leaves for talisman work. 344
- Assists Lucretia with Transfiguration concepts and recognizes the difficulty of mental guidance. 253
Potion Research
Barty approaches potion work analytically, focusing on ingredients, stability, duration, and palatability. He works with Lucretia and Regulus to improve a headache potion for Sophia. 307
- Researches thorn honey temperature control as a possible key to improving the potion. 307
- Secures access to the Potions classroom after discussing the formula with Severus Snape. 307
- Evaluates potion problems in practical terms, including efficacy, duration, taste, and smell. 307
Magical Plant Analysis
During Dumbledore’s lesson, Barty systematically examines magical plants and identifies a defensive specimen by testing its response from multiple directions. 327
- Tests magical reactions methodically rather than relying on intuition. 327
- Harvests seeds from a defensive plant after studying its tracking thorns. 327
- Learns to show respect toward magical life, thanking the harvested plant after observing Lucretia’s influence. 327

- Albus Dumbledore — Recognizes Barty’s interest in defensive magic and observes his growth in learning to respect magical life. 327
Story Role / Major Arcs
Lucretia’s Arrival at the Crouch Household
Barty opposes Lucretia’s adoption and treats her with cold formality. His suspicion culminates in a failed attempt to humiliate her with a carpet trap after overhearing her conversation with Winky. 16 23
Growing Acceptance
Barty gradually begins treating Lucretia as family. He allows her into his room, offers to translate for her during the Quidditch World Cup, notices the improvement of her scars, and encourages her to continue using ointment. 50
Hogwarts Protector
At Hogwarts, Barty helps Lucretia navigate threats and unwanted attention. He confronts Peter about his interest in the Crouch family, warns Lucretia against being alone with him, and provides her with practical help for flying and Transfiguration. 10 217 253
Retaliation Against Rosier
After Rosier targets Lucretia, Barty’s delayed-trigger Leg-Locker Curse is implied to cause Jasper’s severe fall. He later agrees to cooperate with James, Sirius, and Regulus in a plan to punish Rosier, and reacts with fury when her truth spell reveals jealousy toward Lucretia and an unwanted obsession with him. 22 23
Pettigrew Surveillance Investigation
Barty and Regulus identify Peter’s pattern of questions about Mr. Crouch and suspect he is surveilling Lucretia to gather intelligence on the family. Barty informs Lucretia of the threat and joins Sirius, James, Lupin, and Regulus in establishing protective measures around her. 300

- His clothes are embroidered with the initials “B.C.” by Winky. 50
- He plays Quidditch for Slytherin and has regular training sessions. 253
- He is embarrassed by his softer gestures toward Lucretia and often masks them with brusque or overly practical remarks. 50 253 307
