He was someone who had once lived through darkness and gradually lost hope in life.
Outwardly, that showed in his extreme salted-fish attitude. He was indifferent to everything, to the point that he did not even know his teacher still had a child living in the world. If not for his good friend Guy looking out for him, he might have fallen into darkness long ago.
It was not until he met the three students of Team 7—taking care of Naruto, his teacher's child; Sasuke, the clan member of an old friend; plus Sakura, who was basically a freebie thrown in with a phone top-up—that he gradually gained a measure of redemption.
In the manga, he had actually treated Naruto fairly well. Knowing Naruto's foundation was poor, he demonstrated the use of the basic Three Body Technique during the bell test, and in the Land of Waves, he also taught him Tree Climbing, making up for his basics.
If Jiraiya had not taken over the duty of teaching Naruto during the Chunin Exam after they returned to the village, Kakashi probably would have taught Naruto some ninjutsu after patching up his foundation.
The reason he had not taught him earlier was because even if he did, Naruto would not have been able to learn it.
And in the missions and crises that followed, Kakashi was also very protective of Naruto, placing great importance on his safety.
Add to that reality: on the night of the Uchiha massacre before, and throughout their contact today, Kakashi had always been worrying about Naruto.
Because of that, Naruto, who had received the other party's goodwill, had a pretty good impression of Kakashi.
Especially two years later in the future, during
