Li Wei released a pulse scan, attempting to probe the situation within the white fog, but he discovered that his pulse could not penetrate the dense mist below.
The pulse released from his body was like a stone dropped into the ocean the moment it touched the white fog, vanishing without a trace.
"Hummm!" A deep, ancient roar of a giant beast suddenly echoed from the mist, causing the Little Bear in Li Wei's arms to tremble and burrow deeper into his chest.
"What the hell is making that noise?"
A bewildered Li Wei hovered above the fog. The entire town was now shrouded in white mist so thick it was impenetrable; he could no longer tell one place from another. How was he supposed to return the Little Bear and the money to Anna?
That wasn't even the main point—there seemed to be monsters in the white fog, and they could howl!
After circling the town's fog-covered area for a short while, Li Wei relied on a few insignificant memory fragments that his thought system had automatically filtered out to locate the town's only bar. He then shielded the little black bear and dove headfirst into the white fog.
Thump!
After a dull thud, he crashed through the second floor of someone's house, leaving him covered in dust and grime.
Li Wei climbed up from the rubble, shook the debris and dust off his body, and gave the dusty little black bear a few casual pats.
He looked around in confusion and released another pulse scan. This time, the pulse only spread five meters before disappearing into the shroud of the white fog, and he received no feedback; his pulse sensing had lost its effectiveness here.
"What kind of fog is this? Why is it so strange?" Li Wei muttered to himself. As an outsider, he couldn't make sense of this white fog, so he held the little black bear up to his face and asked, "Do you know what's going on?"
Obviously, the little black bear wouldn't answer his question...
Tucking the little black bear back into the crook of his left arm, Li Wei walked from the room he had destroyed toward the door. He searched the entire house but didn't see a single living soul.
After pushing the door open and stepping onto the street, his visibility was less than five meters. He couldn't distinguish the surrounding roads at all, let alone find Anna's house.
If he wanted to find Anna, he had to use the most primitive form of communication: shouting!
"Anna!" Li Wei stood where he was and shouted at the top of his lungs, "I brought the bear you wanted! Uh... the color might be a bit off, but it definitely was conjured!"
The thick fog seemed to have the effect of dampening sound; no matter how loudly he yelled, no response came back.
He just kept moving forward, shouting all the while.
When he shouted "Anna" for the third time, something in the mist finally gave him feedback.
A massive tentacle, several dozen centimeters thick, lunged out of the mist, striking straight at him!
The moment he saw the tentacle looming in the mist, Li Wei's right arm transformed into a Blade. With a single swing, he sliced the incoming tentacle into two halves.
When Li Wei saw clearly what he had slashed, a "holy crap" escaped his lips. Quick as a flash, he swung his blade down again, severing a section of the large tentacle as it tried to retract.
He then used the long blade to flick the tentacle off the ground, and filaments of blood spread out, rapidly absorbing the severed piece.
This was precious, special genetic material!
Come to think of it, this thing looked somewhat familiar, though he couldn't place it at the moment. Besides, he hadn't expected to find such bizarre things in this world!
Blacklight received the brand-new biological genetic material and quickly began the analysis process, but it didn't go smoothly. From the feedback, Li Wei only obtained the most basic biomass; in terms of quantity, this tentacle didn't even compare to that adult black bear.
At least the latter could provide him with some genetic optimization plans, but this tentacle, which looked so intimidating, hadn't yielded a single thing!
Thump, thump!
Two dull footsteps sounded behind him. Li Wei opened his eyes, turned around, and swung his Blade, severing an arthropod-like limb that was trying to snatch him away.
In the mist behind him, a creature resembling a crab standing on four legs had appeared out of nowhere. Most of its body was shrouded in the white fog; standing where he was, he could only see the monster's silhouette, which he estimated to be four or five meters tall.
The severed arthropod limb fell at Li Wei's feet, still twitching and struggling.
The monster in the white fog retreated just like the tentacle he had severed, but Li Wei didn't want to miss this opportunity. He stepped on the severed limb to absorb it, then lunged in pursuit of the monster in the fog.
In just five or six strides, he caught up to the creature shrouded in the mist.
Once he entered the five-meter range of visibility, he could see the monster's true form.
Its limbs grew without any pattern, four crab-like legs supported its movement, and its head was nothing but a twisted mouth surrounded by Cthulhu-esque fleshy tentacles.
The aesthetic of this monster was so bizarre that even Li Wei couldn't help but marvel at it!
Marveling was one thing, but he still controlled his body to accelerate in mid-air, bringing his Blade down onto the monster's head, which wasn't moving very quickly.
The monster's remaining three irregular limbs tried to block him, but its movements were too sluggish, completely incomparable to Li Wei's special acceleration techniques.
In the end, it could only watch helplessly as Li Wei sliced it down the middle. After landing, he witnessed a scene that made him physically ill.
Because inside the monster's split body, there were people squeezed into a mass!
These people were still alive; some who hadn't been sliced by his blade were still opening their eyes and looking at him with expressions of terror.
They were like meat filling in a dumpling wrapped haphazardly by a schoolchild, stuffed and squeezed into the outer skin to become a "dumpling"!
Some people had their arms twisted ninety degrees, others had their heads pressed into another person's chest, and the person whose chest had been split open was still staring at him with terrified eyes...
The eeriness and horror of this scene could not be described with simple words. They looked like abstract paintings given a 3D form. They looked 3D, but in reality, they were still 2D.
The whole thing was filled with horror and absurdity!
After landing back on the ground, Li Wei retracted his Blade and covered the little black bear's eyes with his hand.
Watching the monster take two trembling steps before collapsing with a crash, he let out a slight click of his tongue.
The interior of the monster was composed entirely of people; there were no organs or flesh. At a glance, one could count exactly how many people were stuffed inside the slender monster.
But he had no interest in that. Compared to the infected created by Blacklight, the insides of these monsters were truly disgusting, though it did pique his interest in how such creatures were composed.
Li Wei temporarily set Little Bear on the ground, his hands transforming into sharp claws as he killed everyone who was still staring at him with terrified eyes, one by one, before absorbing them into his body.
He failed to obtain any memories, but he did acquire a method for secreting a special type of mucus. He couldn't develop it further for the time being, and in the short term, it was merely a corrosive substance; this was the only useful part Blacklight had obtained from within this monster.
This mucus only possessed a slight corrosiveness, and its utility seemed rather limited.
The little black bear had been placed on the ground by Li Wei, but it didn't run away; instead, it trotted back to Li Wei's feet on all fours, trying to climb up his pant leg.
It seemed to sense that there was something unusual about this town...
The monster didn't possess any useful genes; it was more like a lump of flesh composed purely of cells. No genetic material could be detected from its flesh, and even the people it had stuffed into its body, who still retained their lives, showed no detectable genetic material or genes.
Every person's genes have variations, and Blacklight would never overlook such things, yet he couldn't detect anything at all from this monster!
"Could it really be some Cthulhu deity, damn it?" After pondering in place for a long time, he lifted his foot, flicked the little black bear that had climbed onto his calf to the front, grabbed it by the scruff of its neck with one hand, and tucked it back under his arm, his face full of suspicion.
The monster from just a moment ago did indeed resemble a product of the Cthulhu Mythos, but Blacklight could still extract "biomass"—the energy needed to maintain his own functions—from them, which meant they were still creatures of flesh and blood!
Perhaps Blacklight simply hadn't found a way to analyze them yet; his level must not be high enough!
"Or maybe... the quantity just isn't large enough!"
