"Please, come over and take a seat, you two."
The staff placed two more chairs opposite Principal Wilson and the other Director of Studies, motioning for Leon and Losweiser to sit down.
The husband and wife exchanged a look.
They could both see a trace of confusion in each other's eyes:
Hadn't the assessment ended? Why did they still need to speak with the school leadership?
With unease in their hearts, the two walked over.
After they sat down, the white-haired old man in the middle introduced himself mildly.
"Hello, you two. I am Walter Wilson, Vice Principal of Saint Hiss Academy. I'm very pleased to be in charge of your assessment."
"Hello, Principal. My name is Losweiser Melkwy, leader of the Silver Dragon Clan. This is my husband, Leon Kasmod. We are greatly honored to take part in your academy's assessment."
Principal Wilson nodded. "Then let's cut the idle chatter and move straight on to the second stage of the assessment: the interview."
"An... interview?!"
Principal Wilson smiled with narrowed eyes. "That's right. This is a new assessment stage Saint Hiss Academy has introduced this year. Are you two... ready?"
The husband and wife both wore grave expressions.
"Ready my ass!"
The two sat ramrod straight, their hands on their knees, like elementary school students listening attentively in class.
Though they looked as if they were "ready for the interview at any moment," both of them were panicking like hell inside.
While Principal Wilson lowered his head to discuss something with the Director of Studies beside him, Leon kept his eyes forward, leaned slightly toward Losweiser, and whispered, "How about we just kill them?"
"That's a fine suggestion, Dragon Slayer. Don't ever bring it up again."
"Then what do we do now? We didn't prepare anything for an interview at all!"
Losweiser closed her eyes, slowly drew in a breath, then slowly let it out. "We'll play it by ear."
"Ahem, ahem—"
Principal Wilson cleared his throat twice. "All right, you two. Let us officially begin the interview."
Losweiser forced out a polite smile. "All right, Principal."
"Ah, please don't be nervous. This is also our academy's first attempt at an interview, so we won't be too harsh. Just relax. Relax."
The couple looked at each other but said nothing.
Principal Wilson picked up the stack of papers before him and asked leisurely, "Do you two still remember your wedding anniversary?"
Like a bolt from the blue, the husband and wife froze on the spot.
They never imagined the principal's very first question would nearly kill the whole show.
But to pass the interview smoothly, after a brief mental shutdown, Losweiser hurriedly replied, "Ah, I remember. Of course I remember. How could I forget such an important day?"
Leon glanced at her.
Eldest sister, we had a child before getting married. Where would a wedding anniversary even come from?!
Losweiser happened to look at him as well, secretly signaling him with her eyes.
Panicked as Leon was, he could still understand what that look was hinting at.
Though they had no definite wedding anniversary, there was a certain day two years ago that might have held even greater commemorative meaning for them than a wedding.
Losweiser said, "Creation Era 1733—"
The two spoke in unison: "May 25th."
On May 22nd, Creation Era 1733, Leon's squad of the Empire's Dragon Slayer Army launched an attack on the Silver Dragon Clan. During the battle, however, Leon was stabbed in the back, defeated, and captured;
Three days later, on May 25th, Leon used Blood Seduction to unite with the Silver Dragon Queen and impregnate her.
Seeing how in sync the couple was, Principal Wilson was slightly surprised.
"You've only been married for two years, yet your child is starting school quite early."
"Yes, Principal."
Losweiser smoothed her hair and took the opportunity to breathe a small sigh of relief.
"Then during these two years of marriage, has the other person had any bad habits or behaviors that you simply cannot tolerate?"
"No," Losweiser answered instantly.
Wilson nodded, then looked at Leon.
Leon frowned, pondered for a moment, and replied, "Yes."
Losweiser panicked at once.
What the hell was this bastard trying to pull?
You could've just said no and skipped this question!
Principal Wilson, however, seemed intrigued. "What is it?"
"At home, I always feel like I have no presence," Leon said gravely.
"No presence?"
"Mm."
Leon said, "Cooking, washing dishes, housework, handling clan affairs—my wife takes care of everything herself. There's practically nothing left for me to do. In this home, it feels like all I can do is watch her bustle around while being unable to help at all."
As he spoke, Leon sighed, then turned to look at Losweiser beside him.
"If possible, I'd like to use this interview as an opportunity to let my wife know that I want to do something for this family too—to share some of your burden."
High emotional intelligence: Help my wife share her burden.
Low emotional intelligence: Holy shit, when her stress gets too high, she comes straight at me—who the hell can take that?
Of course, Principal Wilson had no idea what lay behind Leon's words. After hearing them, he merely nodded in satisfaction.
"How did you two get married back then? Were you in love freely, or were you introduced by the clan elders?" the principal asked.
"Ah, we were... love at first sight, then we dated freely, and then—"
Losweiser looked to Leon for help.
Leon hurriedly picked up where she left off. "Then we had a flash marriage. Mm, we had a flash marriage."
Flash marriage?
Flash pregnancy!
Pregnant the very first time they met~
The Vice Principal looked mildly surprised. "A flash marriage? Oh, to make such a swift decision, there must have been some extraordinary fate that brought you hand in hand all the way to this day, right?"
Doomed couple (smiling with narrowed eyes): "Principal, you really are a sharp judge of character."
"Then, Miss Losweiser, what shining qualities of your husband's attracted you the most?"
The shining qualities on this guy...
Losweiser glanced sideways at Leon beside her, pondered for a moment, then began listing them one by one.
"Focused, serious, smart, not greasy, responsible, fond of children, and he almost never loses his temper with anyone."
After a pause, she added, "On a more superficial note, he's handsome and has a good body. It's just that..."
Principal Wilson asked, "It's just that?"
"His health is a little worse than it was before we got married, but it's not a big problem. My husband is quite skilled at brewing medicine too. He uses all kinds of remedies to keep himself in shape, right?"
The corner of Leon's mouth twitched faintly.
He had thought Losweiser was finally going to praise him properly for once.
Who would've thought she'd still stab him in the end?
"So, I'd also like to take this interview as an opportunity to say something to my husband."
As she spoke, Losweiser reached out and gently placed her hand on Leon's shoulder.
Then she gazed at Leon affectionately and said softly, "Don't push yourself too hard. I understand everything."
"You understand jack sh—"
Principal Wilson covered his mouth and chuckled. What an interesting couple.
"Alright, alright. It seems you two are quite lively in your daily life as well. Then for the next question, what are your plans for the future?"
The couple gathered their thoughts.
"Plans for the future? Could you be a little more specific, Principal?" Losweiser asked.
"Ah, for example... do you plan on having a second child?"
Leon silently covered his face and waved a hand, signaling for Losweiser to answer this one.
Losweiser smiled awkwardly.
"Well... we haven't, haven't considered that yet. Actually, we already have two children: Noa and her twin sister. So as for our plans... we'll focus on raising these two children first, then consider having a second child. What do you think, Leon?"
As she spoke, Losweiser nudged Leon's arm with her elbow.
"Mm-hm, mm-hm. What my wife said."
"So you're already a family of four. How wonderful," the principal commented.
"Thank you, Principal."
After that, the principal asked a few more questions.
Leon and Losweiser parried each move as it came, their answers half true and half false.
As the interview drew to a close, Principal Wilson said, "Then, for the final part of the interview, let's play a little game of 'Truth.' You may each ask the other one question whose answer you most want to know. If you choose to answer, please give your true thoughts as much as possible. If you don't wish to answer, we won't force you."
The husband and wife looked at each other.
To avoid saying too much and making too many mistakes, Losweiser answered directly, "I don't have any questions for my husband. I know everything about him."
"Alright, then what about you, Mr. Leon? Is there anything you want to ask your wife?"
Leon leaned back in his chair, stroking his chin with one hand, his brows slightly furrowed.
Losweiser looked at him, wondering what he would ask.
Was he going to hint that she should go easier on him from now on?
Or would he beat around the bush, making it clear that he wanted to return to the Empire for a look?
It was probably something along those lines.
After all, this interview was also a good chance for Leon to get everything off his chest.
After waiting a moment, Leon looked at Losweiser, meeting her silver eyes, and asked in a low voice, "You actually liked that teddy bear I gave you, didn't you?"
Losweiser froze.
She had never expected Leon to ask such a question.
A question utterly unrelated to their identities, their positions, or the grudges between them.
Losweiser's pupils trembled faintly. She pressed her lips together, raised a hand to tuck the hair by her ear into place, lowered her eyes, and nodded.
"Yes, I really liked the teddy bear you gave me."
Perhaps even Losweiser herself had not noticed that Leon had asked whether she liked it.
But her answer had not simply been "I liked it."
It had been—"I really liked it."
