Chapter 4: Confession

Morning.

The dawn in the east illuminated the entire world. Golden light shone warmly into the room, filling it with peace and serenity.

Xun'er slowly sat up at the head of the bed and rubbed her bleary eyes with her little hands. Sunlight fell across her face, giving it a rosy glow as though she had applied a layer of rouge.

Xun'er saw Lin Yu sleeping soundly by the bedside and froze in surprise.

I remember fainting yesterday at Brother Lin Yu's shop. It seemed to have been caused by fluctuations in the Heavenly Flames within me. Brother Lin Yu stayed up watching over me all night? I never thought I was this important to Brother Lin Yu.

As Xun'er thought this, Lin Yu beside her slowly woke up as well, lazily stretching his arms.

Seeing Xun'er sitting on the bed, he hurried over, wrapped an arm around her, and asked, "Xun'er, you're awake too? Are you feeling better? Does anything hurt?"

Startled by Lin Yu's actions, Xun'er immediately panicked, her eyes darting everywhere. Yet she also felt a hint of secret delight.

"Brother Lin Yu, I... I feel much better. Nothing hurts. You don't need to worry about me so much. Xun'er is very capable, hehe." (∩_∩) Xun'er raised her tiny pink fist and stuck out her tongue playfully.

Seeing Xun'er like this, Lin Yu was delighted. He raised his right hand and affectionately scratched her nose. "Yes, yes, Xun'er is the best." Then he rubbed her head and said, "Then feel around and see whether there have been any changes in your body."

"Okay, Brother Lin Yu!"

Xun'er closed her eyes and sensed the changes within her body. If she had not checked, she would never have known—but the moment she did, she discovered she was a Fighter Five-star! She had soared directly from Dou Qi Three-stage to Fighter Five-star. Who could possibly accept that?!

Xun'er jumped up excitedly and threw herself into Lin Yu's arms. Her hands looped around his neck, her legs wrapped around his waist, and she planted a fierce kiss on his cheek. Lin Yu could only support Xun'er's bottom with both hands to keep her from falling.

"Brother Lin Yu, I'm a Fighter Five-star! And I've perfectly mastered the Golden Emperor Blazing Sky Flame too. This is amazing!" Xun'er said excitedly, her face blooming with a joyous smile. Her appearance left Lin Yu staring at her in a daze. Xun'er, I hope you can always be this happy.

"Xun'er is the best!"

After a while, Xun'er finally realized how embarrassing her actions had been. She was still in Brother Lin Yu's arms. Her laughter gradually faded, and her neck and face turned completely red. She buried her head in Lin Yu's chest, not daring to make a sound.

"Br... Brother Lin Yu, could you put Xun'er down?" Xun'er's voice was as faint as a mosquito's buzz.

Lin Yu chuckled at the sight of her. "Does Xun'er not like Brother Lin Yu's embrace?"

Xun'er immediately panicked. "No, no, that's not it! I just... I just..."

"Alright, alright, I won't tease you anymore."

Then he gently placed Xun'er back on the bed.

At that moment, Xun'er's door suddenly flew open, and a figure rushed inside.

"Little Sister Xun'er, I came to find... you... you two?"

The newcomer had a delicate, youthful face and pitch-black eyes, and he stared at the scene before him in astonishment.

Lin Yu had just placed Xun'er on the bed, while both of Xun'er's hands were still hanging around Lin Yu's neck. It was a scene that could easily lead to misunderstanding.

Xun'er hurriedly released her hands from around Lin Yu's neck, flipped off the bed, and stood on the floor with her head lowered. Her hands kept twisting together restlessly.

The newcomer was Xiao Yan.

Xiao Yan deeply regretted it. It looked like he had made his move too late!

Xiao Yan had originally planned to raise a little girl into his ideal partner, but someone had beaten him to it!

"Brother Xiao Yan, did you need something from Xun'er?"

"Oh! N-no, haha. I was just about to stroll around Wutan City. Want to come with me?" Xiao Yan said awkwardly, scratching his head.

"Sure, let's go together. Xun'er and I haven't eaten yet anyway."

Thus, Lin Yu took Xun'er's hand and walked out of the room. Xun'er was still immersed in what had just happened and did not notice that Lin Yu was holding her hand. She simply let him lead her along, following behind in a daze.

On the streets of Wutan City, Xiao Yan walked in front while Lin Yu held Xun'er's hand behind him. From the moment they left the house until now, Xun'er had kept her head lowered, seemingly lost in thought.

At that moment, Xiao Yan came over to Lin Yu and asked, "Have you two already made your relationship official?"

Lin Yu glanced at Xun'er and said calmly, "I will protect Xun'er forever!"

Xun'er raised her head at those words, and warmth spread through her heart.

Then she asked Xiao Yan, "Brother Xiao Yan, what are lovers?"

Though Xun'er did not know what this unfamiliar word meant, she had already roughly guessed.

Only then did Xiao Yan remember that this world did not yet have the term "lovers." Then how did Lin Yu know it? Could his comprehension ability be unusually strong? Yes, that had to be it.

Lin Yu was also stunned. He had not considered that. Then he gave a wicked smile, as though he had thought of something amusing.

Then Xiao Yan's voice rang out. "Lovers means a man and woman who are in love."

Hearing Xiao Yan's answer, Xun'er's face instantly flushed bright red, and she lowered her head again.

Lin Yu could not help but smile faintly at Xun'er. He reached out and gently rubbed her head. Then he turned to Xiao Yan and asked in a deliberately puzzled tone, "Heavenly King covers Earthly Tiger?"

Xiao Yan froze. "Chicken stewed with mushrooms?"

"Before my bed, the moonlight shines."

"On the ground, two pairs of shoes?"

"Raising my head, I gaze at the bright moon."

"Lowering my head, I think of Qiu Xiang?"

As Xun'er listened to Lin Yu and Xiao Yan trading lines she could not understand, her face was full of confusion.

"You too?"

"You too?"

Lin Yu and Xiao Yan asked in astonishment at the same time.

Lin Yu put on a very convincing act. His expression was exactly the same as Xiao Yan's. If he entered the film industry, those little golden statuettes would be his for the taking.

Xiao Yan looked as though he had found a long-lost relative. His dark eyes shone with excited light, and he grinned so broadly he could not close his mouth. In a single stride, he rushed up to Lin Yu and threw his arms around him, crying excitedly, "Family! Family!"

Before Lin Yu could speak, Xiao Yan placed both hands on his shoulders and asked, "How did you get here? Is there any way to go back?"

Looking at Xiao Yan, Lin Yu thought, Why is Xiao Yan so different from how he was in the book? This place is so exciting, yet he wants to go back? Hasn't he still got his talent? He should be living pretty comfortably, right? I don't get it. I really don't get it.

Lin Yu's calm voice sounded. "Go back? Leaving aside whether it's even possible, even if I could, I wouldn't go back. I've long since been utterly disappointed in that place. Isn't it good here? I found the person I want to protect for the rest of my life. I couldn't bear to leave Xun'er behind alone."

Xiao Yan fell silent. He did not know what Lin Yu had gone through in that world, nor had he experienced it himself. As the saying went, If you have not suffered another's pain, do not urge them to be kind. Indeed, there were many people he cared about in this world as well—his father, his two elder brothers, and more. For a moment, he did not know what to say. He could not help asking himself: would returning to that world really be better than staying here?

As he spoke, Lin Yu looked at Xun'er with adoration.

At that moment, Xun'er happened to look at Lin Yu as well, and their gazes met.

This time, Xun'er did not avoid his eyes. She stared straight into his. Though she could not understand what they were saying, she knew that her Brother Lin Yu might leave her. She did not want Lin Yu to leave her, and at that moment, she became even more certain of what she felt.

Although she was only six years old, she was still the cherished daughter of the Ancient Clan. There were some things she understood.

As Xun'er looked at Lin Yu, tears shimmered faintly in her eyes, and her hand holding his unconsciously tightened.

With a slight sob in her voice, Xun'er asked, "Will Brother Lin Yu leave Xun'er?"

"Silly girl, when did Brother Lin Yu ever say he was leaving you? I wish I could stay by your side for my whole life!"

Xun'er looked into Lin Yu's eyes. Then she stood on tiptoe and pressed her soft, delicate lips to his cheek. As if embarrassed, she immediately lowered her head.

Lin Yu was stunned for a moment. In his impression, Xun'er had always been rather reserved. How could she possibly make such an intimate gesture?

Then Lin Yu pulled Xun'er tightly into his arms.

Watching the two of them, Xiao Yan said helplessly, "Alright, alright, could you two at least consider my feelings?"

Hearing Xiao Yan's voice, Xun'er blushed deeply. She struggled out of Lin Yu's embrace and stood quietly at his side.

Lin Yu merely chuckled to himself.

"Brother Xiao Yan, no matter what, since we're here, we should make the best of it. I'm calling you brother, so from now on, we're brothers. If either of us runs into trouble, we have to help each other!"

"Alright! From now on, we're brothers."

Xun'er hurriedly added, "And Xun'er too!"

Lin Yu and Xiao Yan exchanged a smile.

"Mm."

"Mm."
