Li took in the starving Zhang You after Zhang ate at the then-Auspicious Cloud Restaurant without paying. Zhang was kept at the establishment as an odd-job worker to repay the debt, receiving food and lodging in return. The restaurant later became the Auspicious Cloud Teahouse, with Li and Zhang as its only remaining staff. 1 5

Behind this arrangement, Li and his associates had identified Zhang's unusual physique as material for a sacrificial array. Their initial plan was to subdue and consume him; Zhang discovered the conspiracy after remaining unaffected by their sleeping gas. 1

Li continued maintaining the façade of an employer while monitoring Zhang's development. He sent Zhang to retrieve a brocade box from Zhao Fa, then investigated Zhang's room and courtyard after the Yin Soul's death, recognizing that his “little leek” had become more valuable. 3 4
