After lunch, the servants cleared away the tableware and remained in the kitchen.
The wind and rain neither intensified nor weakened, constantly isolating the island from the outside world.
At first, Natsuhi Ushiromiya seemed determined not to let anyone leave the parlor even for a single step. It was not until lunch had to be prepared that she finally realized that was impossible.
However, she ordered all three servants to go together, refusing to let anyone be alone in the kitchen. Thus, in the parlor crammed with eleven people until the air itself felt stifling, the first ones permitted to leave were the three servants. After the tragedy that had occurred that morning, no one had eaten much breakfast, so everyone silently ate lunch.
"I'll wash the dishes. Please let Brother Genji and Kanon rest. What would you like to drink?"
"I don't need anything. What about Kanon?"
"I don't need anything either."
"You two have been running around since early this morning. No wonder you're exhausted."
Only the sound of Kumasawa washing dishes echoed through the kitchen. Genji and Kanon sat in chairs some distance away, resting with their eyes closed.
Kumasawa was right. The two of them were surely already exhausted. Yet no matter how tired they were, they could not show it before their masters. That was their virtue. After a stretch of silence, Kanon spoke haltingly.
"Shannon. Why did she have to die so horribly?"
"You must forget what she looked like when she died. She was just... unlucky."
"I suppose so. She was just unlucky."
The two fell silent again, and
