Biological plastination was a special technique that could preserve tissue as if it were still alive.
Through a vacuum process, biologically active polymer compounds such as silicone rubber and epoxy resin were used to permeate biological specimens. The type of polymer used determined the optical and mechanical properties of the permeated specimen.
Plastination could keep a specimen's surface in its original state and preserve cellular structure at the microscopic level. Plastinated specimens were dry, odorless, durable, could be preserved for a long time, and were easy to study.
In the end, they were simply specimens.
