History
The Celestial Empire's martial tradition once produced numerous Martial Immortals. In earlier eras, one or two Martial Immortals would remain active while others entered special sleep to preserve their lives; this system collapsed when the outside world became too dangerous for anyone to remain on watch. 264
Its gates were forced open by Foreigners roughly thirty years before the Jin Gate Grand Competition. The resulting war brought unequal treaties, foreign concessions, and a severe military imbalance that even Supreme Experts could not reverse. 105 155 156
Despite its military decline, the Empire retained a major advantage in individual martial arts. Its practitioners' cultivation of Fist Intent allows them to exert strength beyond their physiques, making a Celestial martial artist of equal physical strength overwhelmingly superior to a Western Blood Descendant without comparable training. 208
Government and Factions
The imperial court retains nominal authority and official legitimacy, though its practical control barely extends beyond the Capital City. Provincial forces, old families, martial factions, and foreign interests exercise substantial independent power. 159
| Faction / Institution | Position within the Empire |
|---|---|
| Imperial court | Holds official authority and presides over formal diplomatic occasions despite its weakened provincial control. 159 |
| Aristocratic Alliance | Coalition of old families and powerful figures seeking to unify the Empire; it supports producing a Martial Immortal capable of deterring the Foreigners. 116 160 |
| Martial Prosperity Alliance | Rival martial coalition whose members include people from varied social backgrounds; it later signs a non-aggression pact with the Aristocratic Alliance. 138 160 |
| Ji Faction | Reform-minded force founded by Western-trained Celestial Empire people who sought to stop their countrymen from being bullied by Foreigners. 105 |
| New Faction | Later power centered around Huo Yuanhong and allied martial artists; it resists Foreigners and roots out traitors across the country. 345 377 |
| New Path Research Institute | Institution protected by the martial world to develop the New Path and cultivate Martial Immortal Seeds. 367 |
Military and Martial Arts
Heavy Armor and Firearms
The Empire tightly controls armor, especially heavy armor. Inner armor is comparatively less restricted, but suitable sets are expensive, difficult to obtain, and can impair a martial artist's mobility. 55
- Manifest Strength martial artists generally cannot wear armor thicker than roughly 3 mm over vital areas without becoming ineffective against machine guns. 125
- Full steel armor of at least 6 mm is so heavy that only a few Martial Masters with inborn divine strength can bear it. 125
- The Empire imports some Western technology, including trains, but remains unable to match foreign fleets, giant warships, aircraft, and artillery. 132 156
- Top martial artists remain a strategic deterrent because they can threaten enemy leaders through decapitation strikes. 156 257
Martial Tradition
Martial arts became the Empire's final source of pride after its military defeats. Both reformers and traditionalists believe that martial cultivation remains essential to resisting foreign domination, though they disagree on whether Western technology or a Martial Immortal offers the best path forward. 155
The martial world regards Fist Intent as its decisive advantage: it allows practitioners to recognize and cultivate the true self, then use the mind to control limited physical power with greater efficiency. 208
Foreign Relations
Western Continent
Foreign empires maintain concessions, business networks, military pressure, and covert special-operations forces within the Celestial Empire. Their long-term objective is to divide the Empire among themselves, while exploiting its martial arts, artifacts, medicinal resources, and martial artists. 132 186 293
- Foreign powers rely on advanced warships, artillery, firearms, aircraft, research institutes, and organized combat squads. 186 293
- Western forces fear large-scale martial assassination campaigns, particularly from Grandmasters and Martial Immortals, but consider the Empire vulnerable because its factions lack unity. 257 298
- The Western Continent Research Institute studies Celestial martial arts and uses Celestial or Eastern-trained martial artists against the Empire's own practitioners. 220 261
- The Institute later launches the Holy War Plan, using infiltrated agents and special-operations teams to plunder resources and destabilize the martial world. 322
Eastern Island
The Empire's martial world considers Eastern Island sword arts historically derived from Celestial traditions and views Eastern Island challengers as pirates attempting to seize or distort that heritage. 189 208
Eastern Island martial artists openly challenge the Empire's sword schools, sometimes wielding Celestial techniques such as the Pure Yang Sword Art. 209 Huo Yuanhong's defeat of the Eastern Island Sword Saint with Sword One is regarded as reclaiming the orthodox legacy of Celestial Empire swordsmanship. 257
Martial Immortal Initiative
Multiple factions regard producing a Martial Immortal as the Empire's best chance of survival. A Martial Immortal is considered a fundamentally higher class of being than a Supreme Expert and could deter foreign leadership through unrestricted assassination capability. 116 166 355
- The Aristocratic Alliance and other factions pursue Source Blood Martial Immortals using Source Blood obtained from the Western Lands. 143 269
- Martial Immortal candidates are politically significant because a successful Martial Immortal would ultimately stand above individual factions as an asset of the entire Empire. 166
- Yan Yuan is treated as one of the leading Martial Immortal Seeds due to his Source Blood compatibility, though rival factions question the cost of supporting him. 166 269
- Huo Yuanhong becomes another central hope after repeatedly surpassing expectations, mastering Gang Strength, Divine Strength, and strategic-level combat power. 265 355 367
- The return of Golden Age patriarchs, led by Dong Haichuan, strengthens Martial Immortal City as a fortress and training ground for future Martial Immortals. 355 366
True Realm
The True Realm is closely tied to the Empire's lost martial legacy. A year inside the True Realm corresponds to approximately one month in the Celestial Empire, allowing its inhabitants to accumulate training time at a vastly accelerated rate. 190 269
Many Golden Age masters entered the True Realm and used special devices to halt the decline of their life force. 251 However, Celestial Empire natives generally struggle to adapt to its environment, and prior attempts to create an art that would solve this problem failed. 272 284
Huo Yuanhong investigates methods to help Celestial Empire people adapt to the True Realm, believing that a solution could also allow True Realm natives to adapt to the Celestial Empire. 272 284
