Background

Yao Chen was once a Dou Venerable and an Eighth-grade Alchemist. His former disciple, Han Feng, colluded with outsiders to frame him, forcing Yao Chen to destroy his body and continue existing as a soul. He was also expelled from the Yao Clan, leaving him with little affection for the clan despite his attachment to the place where he grew up. 16 98 146 207

For years, Yao Chen resided in an ancient black ring and spent most of his time muddleheaded. During this period, he unconsciously absorbed Xiao Yan's Dou Qi, contributing to Xiao Yan's three-year decline. 5 8 14

Hun Cang awakened him with soul-nourishing medicine and proposed a bargain: Yao Chen would provide the Burning Art, while Hun Cang would arrange a new body and allow Yao Chen to take revenge on Han Feng. Although initially hostile because of Hun Cang's connection to the Soul Hall, Yao Chen accepted the prospect of a Half-Saint skeleton and agreed to teach Xiao Yan alchemy. 8 15

Appearance

In soul form, Yao Chen appears as a translucent aged man. After his revival, he manifests in the body of a man in his prime. 8 169

  • Translucent when emerging from the ancient ring as a remnant soul. 8
  • Regains a solid, youthful adult body after merging with the preserved skeleton. 169

Personality

Yao Chen is proud of his experience, alchemical standing, and sharp judgment. He is deeply suspicious of the Soul Hall and initially treats Hun Cang's promises with distrust, expecting deception from anyone associated with the Hun Clan. 8 15

He is irritable and blunt with Xiao Yan, frequently answering disrespect with insults or blows to the head. Their constant bickering masks a committed master-disciple bond: Yao Chen rigorously trains Xiao Yan, lends him strength during life-threatening battles, and takes genuine pride in his growth. 17 61 78 81 196
