Shifting attention was a habitual tactic of the British Ministry of Magic. Though it was somewhat self-deceiving, the problems they had to face still needed to be faced.
Fudge sat back down and quietly spoke a name. "Peter Pettigrew..."
The senior officials fell silent again.
If that utterly vile criminal had not been rescued from the hospital in the first place, the Ministry of Magic would not have needed to find another criminal in Azkaban to serve his sentence in his place.
Without a substitute, that person would not have been rescued again. Without that rescue, there would have been no attack last night.
So in the end, all of this had actually been caused by the Ministry of Magic.
If the truth were uncovered, the entire current administration would be forced out at lightning speed.
To save their own skins, the Ministry of Magic had to hide the truth.
There had been three Death Eaters in total. Two had been positively identified, but only one could be made public.
Fudge looked at the silent Scrimgeour. "Rufus, how is the investigation at the stadium going? Have we found out who they kidnapped?"
Scrimgeour shook his head. "Mr. Minister, we have not found any missing staff members for the time being."
"I see..." Fudge lightly tapped the table with his fingers. "Keep a close watch on missing-person cases across the country, especially those who disappeared within the last two or three days."
The Death Eaters had gone to great lengths to abduct someone and bring them to the stadium. Whatever their purpose was, that missing person had to be important to them.
If they could determine who he was, perhaps they could follow the trail and find the Death Eaters.
As for what to tell the public...
Without any clues, they
