Meanwhile, Lynn and the others were taking a detour to the castle's basement from the other side.
Everyone knew how urgent the situation was. Barton, who was injured, directly refused Buck's assistance. He used his clothes for a makeshift bandage, then endured the pain in his back and followed behind everyone.
At this moment, Lynn's mind was still replaying the details of his previous spellcasting.
[Magic Missile], as a basic zero-ring spell, wasn't difficult to learn or cast. The real trouble lay in pre-setting the trajectories for each missile.
Lynn hadn't participated in the first wave of counterattacks with Joanne and the others; he had been preparing his spell.
Unless he had 071 assist him with targeting, controlling twelve [Magic Missiles] simultaneously was his limit, with a power roughly equivalent to a high-rank first-ring spell.
"Are you really Carl?" Amidst the silence, Buck couldn't help but ask.
"Of course!" Lynn nodded.
"But when did you master the Herlam Formula?" Joanne was also very curious. She had only handed the Basic Magic Compendium to Lynn an hour ago. It was impossible for him to have learned it after just a few reads, right?
"Just now..." Lynn replied casually, then suddenly remembered that the original body had only been studying magic for half a year. Saying that seemed too conspicuous, so he quickly explained, "My teacher had explained the principles of this formula to me before. It didn't seem that difficult."
Not difficult? A look of confusion appeared on Joanne's delicate, pretty face. Then why had she spent months studying it without mastering it?
Buck and Barton unanimously felt that their mentor, Coru, must have been secretly giving Carl extra tutoring.
"White Dove, report the enemy's position and distance!" Lynn changed the subject, looking at the girl beside him who had been silent all along.
Even though her actions in killing Will were highly suspicious, they had to rely on her abilities in such a crisis.
"Enemies are everywhere. They're planning to surround us," White Dove said, her body trembling constantly, her voice timid.
"What about Bishop Antioch? Where is he?" Joanne suddenly asked.
"I don't know. My psionic senses can't detect him..." White Dove was on the verge of tears.
"In that case, let's find a place and gather as many enemies as possible to deal with them first!" Lynn calmly analyzed.
Aside from the Archbishop who hadn't made a move yet, the greatest threat to them now was the volley of arrows created by the crossbowmen's coordinated fire. If they were in an open area, a few volleys would kill at least half of them.
"Are you serious? Carl?" Buck's eyes widened in astonishment.
They should be running for their lives, yet Lynn was actually thinking of gathering the enemies to counterattack. This was simply a fantasy.
Lynn didn't reply but glanced at Barton, who was gritting his teeth and enduring the bleeding from his back.
Only then did Buck realize they were carrying an injured person who couldn't move easily. Soon, the enemies would come from all directions. Once they were surrounded, they probably wouldn't even be able to escape.
"What's your confidence level?" Joanne asked directly.
"That depends on how many types of magic you all have mastered!" Lynn said decisively.
Under White Dove's perception and Lynn's coordination, the guards who had been surrounding them from several directions arrived almost simultaneously, trapping the Wizard Apprentices in a side hall on the first floor of the castle.
A total of six guard units. Excluding the mysterious Archbishop Antioch, and those stationed at the entrances/exits and tending to the wounded, everyone else was present.
Even though they had a numerical advantage, Aaron, who had suffered a significant loss at Lynn's hands just now, dared not be negligent. He ordered the guards to advance using shield walls and crossbow formations, then cast supportive Divine Spells along with the other Priests.
[Remove Fear], [Divine Blessing]!
Two beams of white light lit up, and the shield bearers, filled with courage and vitality, raised their sturdy shield walls again and advanced with large strides.
Ahead, Buck stood alone in front of the numerous shield bearers. He lifted a counter that weighed hundreds of pounds, which had fallen to the ground. His already thick arms bulged even further. With strength beyond human limits, he forcefully hurled the heavy counter forward.
"Die, all of you!"
The heavy counter collided with the dense shields, emitting a loud thud.
Immediately after, the hard stone floor beneath their feet suddenly sank.
This was the first-ring spell [Turn Stone to Mud], jointly cast by Joanne and Barton hiding in the shadows!
Their sturdy armor was no longer protection but had become their greatest burden. After being impacted, their legs, which were stepping on fine sand, immediately lost their balance. The shield bearers, who had been standing in neat formation, suddenly stumbled and fell in disarray...
Although it was a joint spell cast by two Wizard Apprentices, the affected area was limited. The crossbowmen in the rear had already raised their crossbows. More than forty sharp crossbow bolts gleamed as they pointed at Buck...
Please, hurry, White Dove!
A drop of cold sweat slid down his forehead. Buck prayed silently in his heart. This second was the difference between life and death!
Fortunately, White Dove didn't disappoint him this time. Just before the crossbow triggers were pulled, an indescribable shriek echoed through the castle.
[Soul Shriek]
Everyone present felt as if their brains had been struck by a heavy hammer. For that instant, they completely lost control of their bodies.
Both sides were injured. The insidious nature of psionic magic was evident!
[Soul Shriek]'s area of effect was extremely wide, and its Magic Power consumption was also incredibly intense. It was forced to stop after only lasting two seconds.
White Dove swayed, nearly falling to the ground.
Joanne and the others felt a wave of anxiety. They had done everything they could, buying a total of five seconds and gathering all the enemies in one place.
This was enough for Lynn. Pale yellow White Phosphorus powder was already suspended in his palm, rapidly growing and expanding into a massive Fireball half a meter high.
The yellow-white flames didn't seem special, but the Wizard Apprentices and Priests present all felt an innate tremor.
However, this massive Fireball wasn't aimed at Aaron and the others. Instead, it flew into the air. To everyone's surprised gaze, it disintegrated, and sparks, trailing white smoke, rained down from the sky like brilliant fireworks.
Barton's face turned pale. He couldn't help but wonder if White Dove's [Soul Shriek] earlier had interfered with Lynn's spellcasting.
After all, Flame Magic was always concentrated when used!
