Paxton immediately picked up Cassie, but just as he reached the door, Darren broke free from Scott and blocked his path. "Sorry, sweetheart.
"You have to pay for your father's mistakes."
Paxton swallowed and gently set Cassie down. "Hide behind me, okay?"
"Okay." Cassie nodded weakly, clutching her stepfather's leg as she yelled at Darren, "Stay away from us."
Darren remained unmoved. The two barbs on his back began glowing blue.
"Dad, help!"
"We'll be okay." Paxton forced himself to sound calm, pinning most of his hopes on Aaron.
"I have to shrink down to the molecular level to get inside." Scott hurried over. Already the size of an ant, he looked at the device on Darren's back and immediately made up his mind.
Hank's wife had done the same thing. To dismantle a nuclear bomb, she had shrunk herself to molecular size, and her fate remained unknown to this day.
But she had done it for innocent people, while he was doing it for his daughter.
