The only key factors capable of triggering Ragnarok were the Eternal Fire and Surtur's Crown. Since the Eternal Fire was in Asgard, Surtur's Crown should have been kept as far away from Asgard as possible.
Leaving it in Muspelheim would have been fine. Giving it to someone else for safekeeping would have worked too. Even tossing it into some random spatial wormhole would have been far more reliable than bringing it directly back to Asgard.
