Background / History

Herpo was born into slavery and discovered his Parseltongue while trapped among venomous serpents for his master's amusement. After ordering a snake to kill his master, he escaped aboard Pythia's father's fishing boat. He later created the Basilisk as an ultimate serpent-like creature through which to exert dominion over others. 691

A historical account places his departure from Sicily in 633 BCE, after a period spent studying magic among its wizard inhabitants. He subsequently became the central tyrant of Ancient Greece; records describe his rule as bringing devastated city-states, withered land, maddened populations, and armies of corpses and bound souls. 671 673 699

Herpo's magical talent made him one of the foundational figures in Dark Magic. He pioneered curses by using fate as a medium to impose calamity on enemies, created the first known Horcrux, and experimented with magic involving souls, death, Inferi, and Dementor-like beings. 77 664 670 714

He was eventually defeated and killed in a duel, but his Horcrux prevented true death. His corpse was sealed beneath Nurmengard and connected to Limbo, where his fragmented soul remained stranded for millennia. Lost Mist leaking from this connection damaged minds and corroded souls, while Herpo repeatedly sought a route back into the living world. 77

Nelson encountered Herpo in Limbo and ultimately gained control over one of his Horcruxes. Herpo repeatedly offered ancient magic, treasure, a grimoire, and servitude in exchange for release, but attempted possession and manipulation whenever an opening appeared. 85 86 103 112

Herpo later returned physically during the Battle of Berlin, using death, Dark Magic, and the stolen magical power of Aurors to strengthen himself. Though restrained several times, he survived through his surviving soul anchors and eventually became involved in the events of Ancient Greece after Nelson and Tom traveled into the past. 653 654 656 725

In Ancient Greece, he built a new power base around Alexandria, using Tom Riddle—under the identity “Karkaroff”—as an adviser. Herpo's rituals turned Alexandria into a purgatory driven by desire and culminated in the creation of a monstrous vessel of accumulated magical power. 699 704 707

After repeated defeats, Herpo's original heart was destroyed by Hermes Trismegistus's curse. Tom replaced it with the Hairy Heart, formed from the souls of Herpo's betrayers; this heart became his most important Horcrux and the core of his continued existence. 691 725

He was highly manipulative and routinely presented himself as humble, grateful, or cooperative when vulnerable. Once he believed he had leverage, this façade gave way to cruelty, arrogance, and a desire to dominate his opponent's body, mind, or soul. 95 112

Despite styling himself as a god, Herpo feared fate deeply. His understanding of cursecraft and prophecy-like magic made him increasingly convinced that he was trapped by destiny; this insecurity could be exploited by Tom and Nelson. 670 681
