Background / History
Nelson grew up alongside Tom Riddle and other children before entering Hogwarts. When he and Tom returned to the orphanage after four months away, Nelson handled Christian's hostile outburst calmly and resolved to help her rather than punish her. Martha's intense gratitude for his belief in her left him unsettled. 23
Following Jonas's murder, Nelson met with the police, learned that the culprit was dead, and left London for Little Hangleton. He later visited Jonas's grave with the Resurrection Stone; Jonas's ghost urged him to stop relying on the stone and choose his own path. Nelson then sailed for Poland aboard the Icarus. 60 62 63
On the voyage, he secretly aided Barry Beckman, an imprisoned Acolyte searching for the Deathly Hallows. Nelson concealed both his age and Hogwarts status while navigating the Acolytes' suspicions, eventually becoming entangled in their operations and Grindelwald's sphere of influence. 66 69
At Auschwitz, Nelson pursued and defeated Herpo the Foul's remnant soul with the aid of a sentient suit of armor. He recovered Herpo's Horcrux, used it to bind the ancient dark wizard in Limbo, and forced him to surrender his grimoire and treasure hoard. 102 103 112
After returning to Britain and Hogwarts, Nelson continued developing Transfiguration, alchemy, and large-scale magical machinery. His inventions and organizational methods transformed Nurmengard's industrial capacity, while his participation in the Triwizard Tournament publicly demonstrated the scale of his creations, particularly the steel giant Alexander. 158 245 291
Appearance
Nelson has soft but increasingly mature features, ocean-blue or azure eyes, and blond hair. His usual composed expression often carries a small smile, though his eyes can turn black when he becomes agitated by absorbed magic. 157 273 288 396
- Blond hair and blue eyes make him conspicuous in ancient Greece, where onlookers compare him to a foreign prince or god. 662
- Frequently wears long coats or black formal robes; his clothing is often adapted through Transfiguration for travel or combat. 157 273 561
- His true appearance may be hidden beneath Transfiguration; the disguise fades when its magic ends. 422
- When invoking the Silver Falcon's power, silver light and black ink flow across his body before falcon-like wings manifest behind him. 396
Personality
Nelson is curious, highly studious, and driven to understand unfamiliar magic. He prioritizes new knowledge over sleep, reads extensively, and treats magical problems as systems that can be dismantled, improved, and rebuilt. 157 426 617
He is generally patient with vulnerable people, as shown in his treatment of Christian, Barry, and the child endangered by Luminous Ore. However, he is wary of manipulation and reacts sharply when he believes others are trying to control his fate. 23 66 674 396
His magic reflects a preference for control, spectacle, and preparation over direct destruction. Lorian describes him as someone who makes everything “beautiful” and “big,” while Nelson himself embraces the principle that “big is good.” 122
Abilities & Skills
Transfiguration
Nelson's principal discipline is Transfiguration. He began as an exceptional first-year, though ambitious transformations could exhaust him, and eventually developed the ability to reshape matter, water, weapons, terrain, and complex machinery in combat. 14 575
- Creates metal cages, silver nets, weapons, armor, and large mechanical structures. 121 293 295
- Can form mist-based duplicates that imitate his appearance and transform into people from his memory. 251
- Can perform hundreds of transformations in a second during battle. 575
- Uses water Transfiguration to halt ships, reconstruct his body, and command large masses of flowing water. 380 637 708
- His early combat magic lacked destructive force; Lorian specifically criticized his tendency to over-prioritize control and excessive scale. 121 122
Lost Mist and Limbo
Nelson has exceptional control over Lost Mist and Limbo, an otherworldly realm in which his abilities are substantially heightened.
- Can Apparate within Limbo and rapidly alter its environment. 112
- Uses Lost Mist to confuse, separate, and trap opponents. 293
- Is capable of creating illusions and obstacles in Limbo during duels with Grindelwald. 577
- His dominance in Limbo does not fully carry over into the ordinary world. 112
Mayflies and Magical Machinery
Nelson creates and commands innumerable Mayflies: rune-inscribed, self-transforming magical components that form weapons, vehicles, constructs, and industrial systems.
- Mayflies form the Pointer Sword, a weapon refined enough to leave a lasting wound on Grindelwald. 575
- They can create platforms, a Tower Ship, and the spell structure for Castling, which exchanges Nelson's position with the vessel. 380 381
- They absorb unstable magic, including the uncontrolled arcs released when Nelson sealed Dr. Sakes's journal. 410
- Mayflies are integral to the Missionaries, magical units designed to let Muggles access limited spell functions. 612 618
Alexander
Alexander is Nelson's giant steel construct, built from accumulated gears, levers, magical components, and Mayflies.
- Initially appears as an incomplete but enormous mechanical giant assembled over three years. 291
- Functions as a combat platform, magical processor, and remote extension of Nelson's power. 291 428
- Assisted in forcing a Time-Turner's second hand backward by one second, though the effort severely damaged its body. 462
- Can act independently when Nelson cannot respond, prioritizing Nelson's survival and the destruction of the immediate threat. 621
Predictive Magic
Nelson can use prophetic or predictive magic to analyze combat patterns and possible future movements.
- With Alexander's processing power, he can mark likely Apparition destinations and eliminate improbable paths in real time. 428
- He deliberately trains Alexander's calculation ability by using predictive magic in combat. 454
- During his N.E.W.T. Transfiguration examination, he states that he can influence the future to some extent. 557
Patronus Charm
Nelson's Patronus is the Silver Falcon.
- He successfully casts it against a Dementor during its registration demonstration. 179
- The Silver Falcon can manifest on a massive scale and break barriers between worlds. 487
- Nelson sacrifices the Patronus during his attempt to destroy the barrier around the Hidden Place. 487
- His falcon imagery later becomes a defensive boundary against intruders in Paris. 493
Alchemy and Sakes Restoration
Nelson studies alchemy under Lorian and applies Sakes Restoration magic to the creation and restoration of magical life.
- Learned to refine steel and develop Familiars through Lorian's instruction. 617
- Created Familiar: Exclamation Mark, his first Alchemical Automaton. 579
- Uses Sakes Restoration to connect magical remnants and restore active magical structures. 428
- Applied this research to the Missionary units and his goal of enabling Muggles to use magic through magical life-forms. 617 648
Time Magic
Nelson researches time manipulation with Lorian and Alexander.
- Investigated a one-second time jump caused by a broken time loop. 426
- Used Alexander's power to force time back by one second. 462
- Combined magic with Tom and a Time-Turner to travel more than two thousand years into the past. 658

- His first Alchemical Automaton is named Exclamation Mark. 579
