Flame Demon Sword Laevateinn was originally the sword wielded by Flame Giant King Surtr, also known as End of the Planet and Branch of Ruin.

To prevent the coming of Twilight of the Gods, Samael, Loki, and Odin had once joined forces to plot against Flame Giant King Surtr. The Flame Demon Sword then eventually fell into Loki's hands.

But as everyone knew, Loki, the god of trickery and pranks, had always possessed a certain "can't-keep-his-hands-to-himself" quality.

So that he could play with the Flame Demon Sword, he had chanted a Rune Magic Incantation at the gates of the frost-misted realm of Niflheim and reforged Laevatein.

Not only had Loki infused it with his own power, but after the forging was complete, he had also placed nine seals upon Laevatein, reducing its power so that he could wield it.

Yet the Flame Demon Sword was of an even higher rank than Odin's Gungnir, the Eternal Spear. It was both a weapon of giants and a weapon of gods, and the very harbinger of ruin itself, foretelling the collapse of the World Tree Yggdrasil and the twilight of the Nine Realms.

Its purpose was destruction and devastation, so it would naturally not be tamed so easily. It had merely restrained its ferocity for the time being.

Thus, Loki's reforging had infused it with the calamitous factor within himself that could bring about Twilight of the Gods, making Laevatein even stronger.

And while his nine seals weakened the Flame Demon Sword's normal power, they also made the thing more deceptive.
