Background

Originally known as Lin Xian, Samael was Ereshkigal’s pet serpent in the Underworld. He chose the name “Samael,” meaning “poison of radiance,” after identifying himself with the primordial serpent who tempted Adam and Eve; the name also concealed his former identity and past 10 33.

While leaving the Underworld in human form, he recklessly spoke a god’s true name and was reprimanded by Shamhat. He learned that true names can resonate with divine beings and that the surface world lacks the Underworld’s protection from their attention 33.

Samael later disclosed his betrayal of Marduk and allegiance to Tiamat. He sought Uruk’s help in restoring the Origin Mother Goddess, arguing that humanity had the right to save itself when its gods would not 72.

He became King of Uruk for nearly a year, gaining practical legal and political experience. He later used that background to debate Themis on codified law, judicial equality, natural law, and legal loopholes 197.

Appearance

Samael commonly operates in human form, but his true nature remains visibly serpentine in his pupils and transformations. He can also alter his appearance and persona through the trait Imitator 33 389 1043.

  • Vertical, serpent-like pupils; later described as Cross Star Pupils or petal-like cross patterns 389 604.
  • Can transform into demonic-beast forms, including a Lion-headed Storm Demon used as a mount in combat 60.
  • Possesses twelve serpentine wings in his fallen-angel form 1359.
  • Uses disguises convincing enough that only Hecate herself was thought likely to see through one of them 389.

Personality

Samael is calculating, adaptable, and unapologetically deceptive. He treats identity, prophecy, law, and public sentiment as tools, preferring selective truths over direct lies. He describes this approach as the work of “the most brilliant deceivers” 33 631.

Despite his ruthlessness, he repeatedly acts to preserve humanity’s autonomy. His struggle against Quetzalcoatl was driven by his refusal to let humanity live as livestock or subjects of gods, and he opposed Angra Mainyu’s attempt to take revenge on all humanity 91 577.

He is also capable of practical compassion. He ended the suffering of Angra Mainyu’s resurrected victims, protected endangered children during the Mass ritual, and personally tended wounded Roman soldiers to steady morale 576 568 1014.

Abilities & Skills

Serpentine Transformation

Samael can reshape his body into demonic-beast forms, using their physical traits in battle and mobility.

  • Wind Attribute Perception, Minor Fire Resistance, and Bone and Muscle Endurance from Ugallu 54.

Fate Tablet and Book of Destiny

  • Manipulated Martha’s information to lure Michael into an assassination trap 702.
  • Manipulated political and religious factions from the shadows, including the Holy Church and Mage’s Association 942.

Immortality and Recovery

Samael possesses abnormal survival and recovery capabilities.

  • Persisted through repeated severe injuries during nearly a full day of combat against Quetzalcoatl 91.

  • Ouroboros further supports his recovery through balanced life-and-death cycles 236.
