All spells were, in essence, shaping. Different spells simply meant different forms of shaping.

The three key factors for learning Apparition applied to all magic as well.
Take the Levitation Charm. When using it, you had to imagine that you could make the object you wanted to control fly. If you yourself believed it was impossible, then the spell could never succeed.
The Unlocking Charm was the same.
