Early the next morning, Wang Lei crawled out of the tent feeling refreshed. It was still raining outside. This was the most annoying thing about Inazuma. He remembered that when he had first explored the area, rain combined with all kinds of Cryo monsters made permanent freeze far more effective than his own.
Once he had absorbed all the mixed energy from the river here, he would find a local to guide him and complete the Thunder Sakura Tree quest. The Traveler would thank him in the future.
Wang Lei checked the system's energy display. Good. The traversal energy he had exhausted overnight had already recovered to 70%.
However, the recovery speed seemed to have dropped considerably. Wang Lei had originally estimated that his energy would be fully restored after one night's sleep.
When he reached the riverbank, he found that the water had indeed become much clearer. Downstream from where Wang Lei had thrown the system-generated phone, the river had returned to its normal color.
But with the Mikage Furnace continuously pouring wastewater into the upstream, the river would probably return to its original state not long after Wang Lei left.
Just as Wang Lei was considering whether to retrieve the system-generated phone and move farther upstream to harvest energy, several samurai shrouded in strange miasma suddenly emerged from the grass.
Wang Lei looked helpless. An Inazuman specialty—a Kairagi accompanied by three Nobushi. He had not expected to run into them so soon.
They had probably noticed the sharp drop in radiation energy here and come to collect water.
After all, surviving in this godforsaken place required some ability to sense the Remnants of the Demon God Energy.
But these people were extremely dangerous. While they were inspecting the water, Wang Lei abandoned the idea of retrieving the system-generated phone. With a roll, he hid behind his tent.
He then took out the Exoskeleton from the System Space and put it on. It looked like a fight was unavoidable.
Sure enough, once Wang Lei had equipped the Exoskeleton and was about to step out, he discovered that Inazuma's customs really were "simple." The Nobushi had already found his camp and were rummaging through it.
Seeing this, Wang Lei grabbed his machete, activated the Exoskeleton's loudspeaker, and roared, "Halt! Who are you people, and why are you ransacking my camp?!"
Wang Lei's booming voice gave the Nobushi quite a fright. Looking up and realizing the sound had come from a "machine," they immediately all jumped back a step.
After all, in a place like Inazuma, no machine one encountered in the wild was ever easy to deal with.
So without another word, the three Nobushi threw a firework at Wang Lei, intending to use its crackling sounds and sparks to block his vision and give themselves a chance to escape. Then they turned and ran.
However, such tactics had no effect at all on an Exoskeleton capable of moving through outer space. Mere fireworks could not possibly obstruct its sensors.
Wang Lei activated his thrusters and shot forward, kicking the spine of the Nobushi running in the middle from behind. He then followed through by crushing the man's chest beneath his foot.
Wang Lei gauged the force he had just used. It seemed that the physical strength of these Nobushi corrupted by the Remnants of the Demon God Energy was not much greater than that of ordinary people.
Watching their companion get caught and instantly killed by that strange "machine," the two Nobushi beside him seemed to have their ferocity provoked. They stopped running, turned around, and drew the katanas at their waists as they roared, "Only This Blade!" before charging Wang Lei.
At the same time, the distant Kairagi drew his katana and wrapped it in purple lightning. He then held the blade horizontally at his waist, assuming the stance for an iaijutsu slash.
Wang Lei immediately pulled the dagger from his waist and threw it at the Nobushi to his left. A flash of silver streaked through the air, and the left-side Nobushi's neck was instantly cut open. His blade could no longer fall.
As for the Nobushi on the right, Wang Lei opened his thrusters to full power and slammed him shoulder-first into the upstream river, which was filled with the Mikage Furnace's waste energy.
The purple mixed energy instantly invaded the Nobushi's body. Tormented into howling by that energy, it no longer mattered that he could swim. Slowly, he sank to the riverbed.
As for the Kairagi charging at Wang Lei with an iaijutsu slash, Wang Lei simply flung a fireball at him.
With a bang, the flames and lightning on the Kairagi's blade triggered an Overloaded reaction in the Genshin World, blasting the Kairagi backward through the air.
Wang Lei then activated his thrusters again and rushed straight to the Kairagi's side, beheading the still-unsteady Kairagi with a single swing of his machete.
After dealing with the attackers, Wang Lei checked the system log. The two Nobushi he had personally killed had given him 4 and 3 points respectively, while the Kairagi had given a little more—7 points.
At that moment, Wang Lei had only one thought. Was Taotie's life energy really this strong? Could it be that ordinary Beast Body individuals simply had greater Life Force than God River Bodies? Or was this thing categorized by combat strength?
And apparently drowning did not count toward his Energy Points? Did he have to kill them directly to obtain them? Just as Wang Lei was pondering this question, a second group arrived at the scene. They seemed to have been drawn over by the explosion from the Overloaded reaction.
From afar, Wang Lei heard someone shout, "Quick, the explosion came from over there! It might have been caused by Watatsumi Island rebels."
Five Tenryou Commission soldiers burst out of the coastal forest and froze when they saw Wang Lei in the Exoskeleton. They had probably not expected the sound just now to have been caused by a mechanical monster.
The moment Wang Lei heard their voices, he guessed that they were Tenryou Commission soldiers patrolling the area, so he did not immediately assume a combat stance. However, Wang Lei's current appearance had still frightened the five soldiers. They nervously raised their spears at him.
Wang Lei did not actually want to come into conflict with the Three Commissions that represented Inazuma's authorities. He was only here for energy, and the Mikage Furnace had overloaded because of an excess of Remnants of the Demon God Energy. Essentially, he was here to help the authorities solve their problem.
So Wang Lei felt there was absolutely no need to become enemies with the Three Commissions.
He removed his helmet and said to the Tenryou Commission soldiers, "Don't be nervous. I'm a Liyue Traveler who accepted the task of resolving the Mikage Furnace issue. I'm not a monster, and I'm not your enemy."
The Tenryou Commission soldiers looked at one another, but no one lowered their weapon. One of them called out to Wang Lei, "You say you accepted the task of resolving the Mikage Furnace issue. What proof do you have? Do you have a travel permit authorizing you to operate in Inazuma?"
The moment Wang Lei heard that, he quickly nodded. "Yes, yes, I do. It's in my bag. I'll get it right now."
After saying that, Wang Lei rushed back into the tent and began rummaging through his backpack. Of course, Wang Lei did not have any travel permit, but he had the system. Everything from the Genshin World could be exchanged through it, including this travel permit. Besides, this thing was essentially just a piece of parchment with no special effects whatsoever. It only cost 1 Energy Point to exchange for one. It was absolutely more authentic than the real thing.
So while Wang Lei appeared to be searching his bag, he was actually searching through the system's exchange list. After finding the travel permit, he exchanged it directly and handed it to the Tenryou Commission soldiers.
Upon seeing the familiar parchment, the Tenryou Commission soldiers relaxed their guard slightly. One soldier took the permit and examined it carefully several times.
Then he returned the parchment to Wang Lei.
"It is a travel permit issued by the Tenryou Commission. But aren't you here to deal with the Mikage Furnace issue? What are you doing in a place like this?"
Wang Lei then led them to the riverbank and showed them the results of his river purification, saying that he was experimenting with ways to solve the Mikage Furnace's pollution problem.
All five Tenryou Commission soldiers knew the state of this river well. Seeing the purified water, they all said that Wang Lei was incredible and insisted on taking him to meet Kujou Sara, who was currently at Kujou Encampment.
