Shadow Sprites loved hunting Edus Worms most of all. The only defense these slow-moving giants possessed was their thick shells, and those shells could never withstand the Shadow Bites of a group of Shadow Sprites whose average warlock level had reached Formal Level. Thus, the Shadow Sprites could always easily burrow into a worm's body and carve out winding tunnels of flesh.
And after a successful hunt, one plump, juicy Edus Worm that did not spoil easily was enough to feed an entire Shadow Sprite tribe for half a year.
Now, with the death of an Edus Worm, a hunting party composed of several hundred adult Shadow Sprites could declare a bountiful return. They streaked through the air in black trails, praising the gift bestowed by "Kla"—the flourishing White Tree Forest—before dancing gracefully in the air and chanting an ancient ballad before the worm's soul dissipated.
It was a prayer written in Shadow Silent Speech. Its rising and falling syllables resembled a breeze stirring leaves, while the Shadow Sprites' dance drifted like flowing strands of ink against the backdrop of white trees...
"Great and flourishing Forest of White Trees, you have endured eternally within the shadows.
The cloak of darkness dances without wind, and the eternal night covers the earth.
Children of shadow are born in the white forest, return in darkness, and sleep in silence.
Every life shall enter death beneath the night.
Every soul may find peace as the shadows pass away..."
Ancient songs and dances were always an essential part of a Shadow Sprite hunt's conclusion. They used them to praise the "White Tree Forest that bestowed everything" and to mourn the prey that had given its life, fallen companions, and even "pitiful, hate-filled" enemies.
Traditionally, these little fairies treated their rituals with incomparable solemnity and importance.
