Who Exactly Was He?
Huang Ji and Professor Lü Qinggong talked for an entire morning.
After briefly touching on the topic of positively guiding cancer, Huang Ji changed the subject.
Aside from some unconventional ideas at the beginning, the rest was a serious academic discussion.
As their conversation deepened, Lü Qinggong gradually forgot that Huang Ji was merely a "graduate student."
It was as if Huang Ji were a full professor himself. Lü Qinggong began bringing up problems he had long struggled to research and discussing them with Huang Ji.
It took roughly three hours before Huang Ji had absorbed all the medical knowledge Lü Qinggong possessed that he himself lacked.
Without a doubt, Huang Ji's medical skills were already no worse than Lü Qinggong's—perhaps even better!
With his solid foundation in traditional Chinese medicine and chemistry, coupled with Information Sense, Huang Ji's understanding of the human body surpassed that of the vast majority of people in the world.
By the end, the two were discussing matters as equals.
Every paper Lü Qinggong had read and every problem he had studied in his daily work, Huang Ji knew about.
On some matters, Huang Ji shared Lü Qinggong's views. On others, he offered differing opinions—unique perspectives born of his own way of thinking.
"Sorry, Professor Lu, but my stomach's already growling... and I have something to do this afternoon..." Huang Ji said hurriedly after checking the time. It was already noon.
Only then did Lü Qinggong snap out of it. He stared at Huang Ji in astonishment, as though looking at a priceless jade.
Not an uncut piece of raw jade, but a finished treasure!
Perhaps his breadth of knowledge did not yet match Lü Qinggong's, and they had merely happened to discuss subjects they each excelled in. But at the very least, in the fields they had discussed over the past four hours, Huang Ji's insights and expertise were no less than his own.
"Xiao Hua, are you interested in changing advisors? Report to my institute tomorrow. I'll give you a monthly stipend of five thousand," Lü Qinggong said with a smile.
Huang Ji smiled. "I'm only good at theory."
"Are you worried about Yang Qizhong? It's fine, I'll talk to him. That man doesn't care about his students at all. Xiao Hua, come with me, and I'll give you seven thousand a month!" Lü Qinggong said. He truly cherished talent.
"I'll think about it," Huang Ji said with a smile.
Seeing this, Lü Qinggong did not press too hard. He nodded and let Huang Ji leave.
As he packed up to head back, he continued pondering some of Huang Ji's insights. The more he thought about them, the more he felt that young people had lively minds.
"Damn it! I forgot to get his number!" Lü Qinggong suddenly remembered that he had not saved Huang Ji's phone number.
So he simply called Professor Yang Qizhong directly.
After a while, the call connected, and Lü Qinggong immediately said, "Old Yang, I want one of your graduate students!"
"Oh? You think any of my useless lot are worth taking?" Professor Yang said.
"That's because you have no eye for talent. Just tell me, are you giving him to me or not?" Lü Qinggong said.
"Sure, I'll recommend one to you." Professor Yang agreed casually. They were only graduate students, and he had far too many under his name.
"No, no, no! I don't want one you recommend. Do you think I lack students? I want that one of yours named Hua Xu," Lü Qinggong said.
Professor Yang was utterly confused. "Hua Xu? Who's that?"
"See? You don't care about your students at all," Lü Qinggong said.
"Fine, fine, fine. I'll look. I've got all their numbers saved in my phone. I'll hang up and check first," Professor Yang said.
"Fine. Oh, and remember to send me his number afterward. All right, that's settled." Lü Qinggong hung up.
He was in an excellent mood, beaming as he walked down the corridor, humming a tune.
Just then, a young woman came running back, drenched in sweat.
Lü Qinggong took one look. Wasn't that Xiao Qian?
"Slow down, slow down. Something happened at home, so there was no need to rush back like this."
"???" Xiao Qian was baffled.
"I'm sorry, Professor. Someone held me up on the way here. An old man sprawled on the ground and tried to scam me, and he even snatched my phone..."
Lü Qinggong froze. Why was that different from Hua Xu's story? Forget it. It was not important.
"It's fine. Today's meeting is over. The classmate you asked to fill in for you on short notice was really impressive. He's your junior, right? You should learn more from him instead. By the way, you have his number, right?"
Xiao Qian was even more confused after hearing that.
What classmate? What fill-in? What junior?
"I... huh? Professor, what are you talking about?"
Lü Qinggong frowned, growing irritated. "Hua Xu, obviously. Didn't you have something to deal with and ask him to cover for you? Give me his number."
Xiao Qian was nearly dizzy from confusion. She hurriedly said, "No... I'm sorry, Professor. My phone was stolen at the time, and that old man kept pestering me for a long time. I couldn't get away at all, much less ask someone to fill in for me..."
"What did you say?" Lü Qinggong was shocked.
"I didn't ask anyone to fill in for me. I don't know anyone named Hua Xu..." Xiao Qian said honestly.
"Don't you young people mess with me! Explain this clearly! You didn't come today, yet a graduate student came in your place to deliver the materials and even assisted with the meeting. You're saying you know nothing about it?" Lü Qinggong was getting anxious!
Seeing the professor so anxious, Xiao Qian panicked too, but she still said, "I really don't know. I really don't know anyone named Hua Xu."
Lü Qinggong stood there dumbfounded.
At that moment, Professor Yang called. Lü Qinggong quickly answered.
Professor Yang said, "Old Lü, that Hua Xu you mentioned isn't my student."
"Are you sure? Don't lie to me!" Lü Qinggong was truly panicking now!
"Why would I lie to you? I don't even have a student with the surname Hua," Professor Yang said.
"Impossible! Do you have his phone number?" Lü Qinggong asked.
Professor Yang was speechless. "Hey, you... He's not my student. Where am I supposed to get his number? What's wrong with you? You're talking nonsense!"
"How could this happen? How is that possible? Where's my student?" Lü Qinggong muttered.
He was completely bewildered, standing there stiffly with an incredulous expression.
That student named Hua Xu had solid knowledge, flexible thinking, profound insights, and impeccable manners.
He was practically the perfect student. Lü Qinggong had even planned to take him on as his true successor and train him into his most prized disciple.
He had thought of so much, so very much...
How had he suddenly... vanished?
"Have I gone senile? Impossible!" He could not make sense of it. It all felt like a dream.
He hurriedly called the other attending physicians who had been in the meeting, only to confirm that the person had truly existed and he was not dreaming...
"I shouldn't have let Hua Xu go!" Lü Qinggong clutched his forehead.
If he had known Hua Xu had fabricated his identity and snuck in, he should have forced him to stay, or at least gotten his contact information.
Lü Qinggong did not care about the deception itself. After all, Hua Xu had not harmed him. He had merely assumed an identity to come in and discuss academic matters with him.
How was that even deception? It was simply something scholars did.
"He should be from Fudan University. Quickly, help me find out whose student he really is!" Lü Qinggong said.
Xiao Qian asked, "What does he look like?"
Lü Qinggong froze. How was he supposed to describe that? All he could say was that he would recognize him if he saw him.
Xiao Qian had more or less understood by now. "If he snuck in, the elevator and corridor surveillance cameras should have caught him, right?"
"Check! Take me to check the surveillance footage, now!" Lü Qinggong said excitedly.
The two went to the security room, and before long, countless people were helping him search through the footage.
But no matter how they searched, Huang Ji was nowhere to be found during that time. Clearly, he had avoided every camera.
"How is that possible?"
"How did you install these cameras? Why are there so many blind spots?"
Lü Qinggong searched through the footage again and again.
At last, he found "Hua Xu" in a recording from the main entrance and exit. However, there was no view of his face. He had perfectly positioned himself at an angle, kept his head lowered, and slipped out among the other people visiting the hospital.
Lü Qinggong had only recognized the clothes showing in the footage.
"Why? Why didn't he want to show his face?"
Still unwilling to give up, Lü Qinggong went to check the university. In the end, he discovered that there was no one at the school named Hua Xu either.
"How strange. Who exactly is he?"
P.S. Sorry. I really love chatting with you all. Why is it that whenever I mention making use of cancer cells, you immediately think of turning the whole body cancerous and immortality? First, cancer cells cannot possibly perform tissue functions, meaning they cannot become any organ. Turning the whole body cancerous would just leave you as a lump of tumors. Second, immortality through endless reproduction is regression. Three billion years ago, blue-green algae nearly wiped out all life on Earth, including themselves. Did you forget what Black Emperor talked about while dating? After painful lessons, life finally evolved "death" and sexual reproduction. Cells finally put a lock on themselves, restricting their limitless division. Every now and then, genetic mutations adapt to the environment and unlock that restraint for a while—how could they suddenly revert to asexual division? A return to 2.7 billion years ago? A cancer cell only counts as a successful mutation if it heals itself. That is why increasing the success rate of its self-healing is the best treatment. Besides that, Huang Ji's cancer cells really do have many ingenious uses that no one has probably thought of, but I won't say more. They will come up later.
