Nature and Origin
Yinlings are commonly regarded as beings who emerge after death. Yin souls formed from deceased living beings are guided through the River of Forgetfulness, where they may become Yinlings in the Netherworld. Most Yinlings originate from the river, though Yinlings are also capable of producing descendants. 425 498 521
Despite their association with death, Yinlings possess flesh-and-blood bodies and are treated as a distinct form of life. They can appear outwardly identical to living humans, allowing some to hide among mortal populations. 425 498 750
The distinction between Yinlings and Yin Soul Monsters is contested. Chen Mu initially identifies Yinlings as essentially Yin Soul Monsters, but later distinguishes true Yinlings by their independent awareness and capacity to learn secret arts; incomplete Yin Soul Monsters lack this spiritual awareness. 598 608 751
Physiology and Sustenance
Yinlings do not require ordinary food for survival. They sustain themselves through Jade Dew, gathered with the Dew Gathering Incantation. 425 426
- Jade Dew — Restores warmth and sustains a Yinling's existence. Ordinary Yinlings have a limit to how much they can gather. 427 428
- Yin Spirit Divine Power — The foundation of a Yinling's secret arts, regeneration, and cultivation. Excessive expenditure can damage its underlying essence. 435
- Regeneration — Damaged limbs can be restored with Yin Spirit Divine Power, though restoring lost divine power requires consuming large quantities of Jade Dew over time. 435
- River of Forgetfulness exposure — The river supplies Weak Water and Jade Dew, but can also corrode Yinling bodies and cause them to sink into Yin Nether Insects. 469
Abilities & Skills
Dew Gathering Incantation
The basic survival art of newly arrived Yinlings, used to condense and collect Jade Dew from the environment. 426 427
- Provides the nourishment needed for continued existence. 425 427
- Requires a specialized chant with precise pauses, rhythm, and intonation to stir Strange Force. 426
- Newly born Yinlings may know little beyond this incantation. 437 463
Yin Spirit Divine Power
Yinlings possess divine power that fuels their supernatural development and can be combined with that of other Yinlings. 435 461
- Can restore physical damage, though such restoration consumes foundational power. 435
- Can be gathered through the Mountain Bearing Scripture for collective movement and combat. 469
- Can be used by groups casting the Three Paths Curse to draw Weak Water from the River of Forgetfulness. 459 466
Divine Ability Ghost Marks
A Yinling granted Spiritual Mechanism may develop an innate endowment manifested externally as a Divine Ability Ghost Mark. 461
- Ghost Marks are incomplete foundations that can be nourished into a Spirit Embryo through Weak Water and Return to Origin. 461
- A developed Spirit Embryo can continue growing toward a Yin God and gain increasingly potent Divine Abilities. 461
- Fire-based cultivation methods such as the Flying Flame Scripture or Three Yin Phosphor Fire Curse can refine impurities and encourage Ghost Mark awakening. 435 475 481
- Fire refinement consumes a Yinling's origin and must be supported with Jade Dew or refined medicines such as Awakening Spirit Soup. 481
Mountain Bearing Scripture
A collective secret art that links Yinlings through a Mountain Seal and gathers their scattered Yin Spirit Divine Power into a unified force. 463 469
- Allows groups of Yinlings to travel on Yin Wind and use the Yin Wind Fire Bell secret art. 469
- Teams of roughly one hundred Yinlings can fly and fight together when their power is pooled. 469
- Mountain Seal bearers gain limited control over linked Yinlings and may forcibly draw upon their divine power. 472
- Large-scale coordination can produce the Myriad Ghosts Bearing Mountain effect, capable of mobilizing immense numbers of Yinlings at once. 479
Society and Control
Jigu City
Jigu City recruits Yinlings from the River of Forgetfulness through Ghost Soldiers such as Niu Sanmiao. Newly arrived Yinlings are expected to gather Jade Dew and function within the city's economy. 427 432
- A Red Lantern can capture a Yinling's Qi Mechanism and mark it for the city's Soul Summoning Banners. 436
- Yinlings marked in this way cannot escape the banners' summons. 436
- Chen Mu describes ordinary Yinlings in the city as human-shaped “Spirit Fields,” valued for their ability to produce Jade Dew. 432
Auxiliary Soldiers
Large numbers of newly born Yinlings serve as Auxiliary Soldiers in departments such as the Yuan Gathering Department, Engineering Department, Flame Carriage Department, and Yin Wind Department. 463 470
- Newly born Auxiliary Soldiers are generally weak and often know only the Dew Gathering Incantation. 437 463
- Their collective divine power can support major secret arts, spatial travel, and military formations. 466 485
- Yinlings who fail to gather with a relocating force may be abandoned in dangerous regions of Nether Demon Heaven. 471
Living Gods
A Yinling stationed inside a City God Dao Field may become a Living God. Living Gods form the core of a Dao Field and draw Yinlings appearing within its range back toward the River of Forgetfulness. 496 520
