Ch. 701A Sage Falls!

Chapter Summary: “Saints Fell!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Lu Qingfeng has cultivated for over eighty years on Green Bamboo Mountain and successfully overcomes his remaining two Heavenly Tribulations, becoming a Heavenly Immortal.
  • Ao Le’s cultivation also progresses rapidly in the ancient Earth Immortal Realm. She is preparing to undergo her fourth Heavenly Tribulation, which would make her comparable to a second-realm Earth Immortal of the later age.
  • Gouchen Emperor visits Green Bamboo Mountain after hearing that Lu Qingfeng is a benevolent and Dao-seeking demon immortal. He invites Lu Qingfeng to help suppress rebellious demons in Southern Jambudvipa, promising him status and rewards in Heaven.
  • Before Lu Qingfeng can accept, Gouchen Emperor’s stolen Nine-Toothed Rake breaks out of his Mustard Seed Space. Gouchen flees while two powerful figures pursue him, forcing him to abandon the conversation.
  • Lu Qingfeng realizes that events are diverging sharply from the history he knows. Rather than pursuing the powerful combatants, he decides to remain on Green Bamboo Mountain and observe developments.
  • Three years later, Lu Qingfeng receives shocking news: Gouchen Emperor supposedly fought several great demons, encountered East-Coming Buddha, was ambushed in the Flood Dragon Demon King’s prison, and was killed, with both his physical body and Primordial Spirit destroyed.
  • Unsure whether this report is true, Lu Qingfeng abandons his plan to rely on Gouchen Emperor and instead focuses on strengthening himself.
  • He invests his Heavenly Immortal cultivation into improving the Twelve Capital Demon God Art, causing his cultivation to fall temporarily to the early Earth Immortal stage. After thirty years, he recovers his lost cultivation and continues strengthening the technique.

Character Developments

  • Lu Qingfeng becomes a Heavenly Immortal and gains greater confidence in his cultivation. However, the unexpected changes in history force him to become more cautious and self-reliant.
  • He shifts from seeking protection or advancement through Gouchen Emperor to prioritizing his own cultivation, techniques, and survival.
  • Ao Le continues making remarkable progress despite her previously mediocre aptitude, demonstrating the extraordinary advantages of the ancient Earth Immortal Realm.
  • Gouchen Emperor is portrayed as newly appointed, politically weak, and eager to recruit capable allies. His sudden flight and reported death reveal how dangerous and unpredictable the altered timeline has become.

Significant Themes

  • History and altered fate: Events unfold differently from the history Lu Qingfeng remembers, raising questions about whether his knowledge is incomplete or whether his presence has changed the timeline.
  • Uncertainty and adaptation: Lu Qingfeng responds to unpredictable developments by remaining cautious and strengthening himself rather than acting rashly.
  • Power and survival: Even a figure who may eventually become a Sage can face humiliation, pursuit, betrayal, and apparent death within the spacetime fragment.
  • Cultivation and self-reliance: The collapse of Lu Qingfeng’s hoped-for alliance reinforces the importance of personal strength over external backing.
  • The limits of knowledge: Lu Qingfeng’s understanding of future events proves unreliable, forcing him to question what he believes about the realm’s history.

Character Interactions

  • Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le continue cultivating together on Green Bamboo Mountain, with Lu Qingfeng supporting her advancement through tribulation.
  • The mountain god and earth god introduce Gouchen Emperor to Lu Qingfeng and later serve as his source of information about events in the outside world.
  • Lu Qingfeng respectfully receives Gouchen Emperor and deliberately appeals to his interests, hoping to gain his invitation and protection.
  • Gouchen Emperor attempts to recruit Lu Qingfeng, but the appearance of the Nine-Toothed Rake interrupts the negotiation.
  • The later report of Gouchen Emperor’s apparent death destroys Lu Qingfeng’s expectation of relying on him and prompts a major change in Lu Qingfeng’s plans.

Ch. 702Sect Master Grade! A Heaven-Defying Windfall!

Chapter Summary: “Sect Master Tier! Heaven-Sent Opportunity!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Over five hundred years, Lu Qingfeng repeatedly dispersed and rebuilt his cultivation to deduce and strengthen the Twelve Capital Demon God Art. He completed twenty cycles of rebuilding, gradually improving both his cultivation speed and understanding of the technique.
  • Through constant cultivation and battles with the Blackwind Mountain Demon Kings, Lu Qingfeng realized that the true essence of the Demon God Art was battle. He abandoned his former reluctance to fight and embraced a path of confronting heaven and earth through strength.
  • The technique finally advanced to the Cult Master tier, equivalent to a Sage’s supreme cultivation art. It allowed him to visualize the thoughts of myriad demon gods, transform into the Twelve Capital Demon Gods, and pursue an indestructible body.
  • Upon cultivating the perfected art, Lu Qingfeng absorbed spiritual and immortal energy at an astonishing rate. By transforming into different Demon Gods—particularly Gonggong and Zhurong—he multiplied his absorption speed and rapidly restored his cultivation from the Earth Immortal realm to the Celestial Immortal realm.
  • His body was repeatedly destroyed and reforged, growing increasingly powerful. He gained strength sufficient to fight Celestial Immortals and even contend with Golden Immortals without relying on magic treasures or divine abilities.
  • Ao Le arrived and was stunned by the overwhelming power of Lu Qingfeng’s Dijiang transformation. Although she had diligently cultivated and passed seven heavenly tribulations, she felt completely unable to withstand his aura.
  • Lu Qingfeng sensed twelve Netherworld King Flags hidden in distant space. Within their formation were several extraordinary treasures, including the Heavenly Centipede Bamboo Staff, Seven Treasures Wonderful Tree, Apricot Yellow Banner, God-Beating Whip, Immortal-Slaying Flying Knife, Five-Colored Divine Light, and Eastern Emperor Bell.
  • The twelve flags formed an autonomous defensive formation that concealed and protected the treasures. Lu Qingfeng first failed to seize them physically, then repeatedly used his Five-Colored Divine Light to weaken the formation.
  • After nearly exhausting his magical power, he finally captured all twelve Netherworld Flags. He then swept away seven of the unclaimed treasures before they could escape and immediately fled, unwilling to risk being discovered or intercepted.

Character Development

  • Lu Qingfeng: His cultivation, physical strength, magical power, and primordial spirit all undergo a dramatic transformation. More importantly, he gains a new understanding of his Dao: the Demon God Art is not merely a defensive or mystical technique but a path centered on relentless battle. Reaching the Cult Master tier gives him Sage-level potential and greatly increases his confidence.
  • Ao Le: She continues cultivating diligently and has passed seven heavenly tribulations, showing significant progress. However, Lu Qingfeng’s breakthrough leaves her awed by the enormous gap between them and highlights his rapidly increasing power.
  • The Twelve Demon Gods: Though not independent characters in the scene, their essences and thoughts become increasingly integrated into Lu Qingfeng’s cultivation, guiding his transformation and strengthening his connection to the art.

Significant Themes

  • The path of battle: True mastery of the Demon God Art requires direct confrontation, courage, and a willingness to fight rather than relying exclusively on avoidance or clever techniques.
  • Transformation through repetition: Lu Qingfeng’s repeated cycles of destruction, rebuilding, and deduction gradually produce both deeper understanding and physical evolution.
  • Sage-level inheritance and self-created mastery: By deducing the art himself, Lu Qingfeng effectively gains the equivalent of constant instruction from a Sage, demonstrating the value of insight and perseverance.
  • Power and opportunity: Lu Qingfeng’s breakthrough immediately presents him with a rare treasure opportunity, showing how increased strength allows him to seize chances that would previously have been impossible.
  • Greed tempered by caution: Although delighted by the treasures, Lu Qingfeng does not linger. He prioritizes escape after obtaining them, recognizing the danger of attracting powerful enemies.

Important Character Interactions

  • Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le: Ao Le witnesses Lu Qingfeng’s terrifying new strength when he appears in his Dijiang form. Lu Qingfeng addresses her gently as “Le’er,” but quickly departs after sensing the hidden treasures.
  • Lu Qingfeng and the Netherworld Flags: The flags oppose his attempts to seize them by forming a powerful defensive formation. Lu Qingfeng relies on his knowledge of the Twelve Demon Gods and repeated use of the Five-Colored Divine Light to overcome them.
  • Lu Qingfeng and the unclaimed treasures: He races to capture the treasures before they scatter, using the Five-Colored Divine Light to sweep them into his possession one after another before fleeing the area.

Ch. 703Willing to Abandon Treasures to Escape the True-False Realm!

Chapter Summary:

Green Bamboo Mountain

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Lu Qingfeng urgently returns to Green Bamboo Mountain after sensing overwhelming danger. He warns Ao Le that they must leave immediately and gathers his seven Treasure Gourd incarnations, who have reached the Heavenly Immortal realm.
  • Before they can escape, Maitreya Buddha—the “East-Coming Buddha”—arrives from the Western Sect. He traps Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le inside a miniature Buddhist kingdom created from a grain of sand.
  • Lu Qingfeng breaks through the Buddha Kingdom using the Seven-Treasure Wonderful Tree, but Maitreya’s forces continue attacking:
    • The Yellow-Browed Boy strikes with the powerful Golden Cymbal.
    • He then uses the Human-Seeds Bag to try to capture Lu Qingfeng.
    • Sword and golden light arrive from the direction of Kunlun Mountain, signaling the intervention of Jade Void Palace Golden Immortals.
  • To escape, Lu Qingfeng sacrifices or abandons several treasures. He uses the Seven-Treasure Wonderful Tree to restrain the Human-Seeds Bag, the Apricot Yellow Banner for defense, and throws the God-Beating Whip into the torn void before fleeing with Ao Le.
  • Lu Qingfeng successfully returns to the Immortal Qin Realm. His abandoned treasures are recovered by Maitreya and the Jade Void Palace forces, but they cannot locate him afterward.
  • In the Starry Sky, Lu Qingfeng reflects that his greed caused him to be detected. He concludes that the Twelve Capital Netherworld King Banner formation had previously concealed his actions, but without it, taking the treasures exposed him.
  • He reveals the four treasures he successfully brought back: a bamboo staff, a gourd, feathers, and a bronze bell.
  • The Heavenly Centipede Bamboo Staff, originally a high-grade Numinous Treasure in the alternate spacetime, is reduced to a low-grade Numinous Treasure after crossing from that realm into Lu Qingfeng’s true spacetime.
  • The chapter ends with Lu Qingfeng examining the Five-Colored Divine Light, a high-grade Numinous Treasure and innate Divine Ability once belonging to Kong Xuan.

Character Developments

  • Lu Qingfeng demonstrates decisiveness and resourcefulness under extreme pressure. He prioritizes Ao Le’s safety and his own survival over retaining valuable treasures.
  • His recent success has also revealed a weakness: greed and overconfidence led him to take too many treasures without adequate concealment. He recognizes this mistake and becomes more cautious.
  • Lu Qingfeng’s understanding of spacetime, truth, and falsehood deepens as he observes that treasures from the alternate realm weaken when brought into his original reality.
  • Ao Le initially reacts with fear and shock but quickly recovers once they reach safety. Her excitement over the treasures reflects her trust in Lu Qingfeng and her supportive relationship with him.
  • Maitreya Buddha is portrayed as calm, jovial, and terrifyingly powerful. His friendly appearance contrasts with his relentless attempts to capture Lu Qingfeng.
  • The Yellow-Browed Boy acts obediently under Maitreya’s command, wielding the Golden Cymbal and Human-Seeds Bag.

Significant Themes

  • Survival over greed: Lu Qingfeng must abandon several supreme treasures to escape alive, reinforcing that preserving one’s life and future matters more than immediate gains.
  • The danger of power and treasure: The treasures are immensely valuable, but acquiring them attracts powerful enemies, including Maitreya Buddha and Jade Void Palace Golden Immortals.
  • Truth and falsehood: The alternate spacetime is a realm where reality and illusion overlap. Objects change in power when they pass between realms, emphasizing the instability of existence and perception.
  • Cause and consequence: Lu Qingfeng’s actions in seizing treasures directly expose him to pursuit. His escape succeeds, but at a heavy material cost.
  • The vast hierarchy of cultivation: Even with powerful artifacts and multiple Divine Abilities, Lu Qingfeng remains only a Heavenly Immortal and must avoid attracting the attention of Sages or top-level Golden Immortals.

Character Interactions

  • Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le share a close marital bond. He immediately protects and carries her away, while she worries about his sudden departure and later celebrates his success.
  • Lu Qingfeng confronts Maitreya Buddha in a battle of escape rather than conquest. Maitreya remains composed and smiling, while Lu Qingfeng is forced into increasingly desperate defensive measures.
  • Maitreya commands the Yellow-Browed Boy, who responds respectfully and carries out the Buddha’s orders with the Golden Cymbal and Human-Seeds Bag.
  • After escaping, Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le discuss and examine the treasures together, sharing relief and excitement over what they managed to retain.

Ch. 704Those Who Learn from Me Live; Those Who Resemble Me Die? Do You Even Qualify?!

Chapter 694 Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Lu Qingfeng examines the treasures brought back from the True-False Realm:
    • Five-Colored Divine Light, a high-grade Numinous Treasure that can greatly aid his comprehension of the Five-Colored Divine Light divine ability.
    • Immortal-Slaying Flying Knife, another high-grade Numinous Treasure capable of killing powerful immortals, though its copied form is weaker and highly specialized.
    • Eastern Emperor Bell, a supreme-grade Numinous Treasure with extraordinary defensive, spatial, temporal, and yin-yang-manipulating abilities.
  • Lu Qingfeng realizes that these treasures are only temporary copies. They have fallen several grades from their original forms and will return to their source space-time after three thousand years.
  • By examining the treasures alongside the twelve Capital Netherworld King Banners, Lu Qingfeng understands why he was able to bring them out: they are not the true treasures, but space-time-created replicas.
  • He decides that:
    • The Five-Colored Divine Light is most useful for his own cultivation.
    • The Immortal-Slaying Flying Knife is too murderous and unreliable to serve as a primary weapon.
    • The Capital Netherworld King Banners and Heavenly Centipede Bamboo Staff carry immense karmic burdens.
    • The Eastern Emperor Bell is best suited for Ao Le.
  • Lu Qingfeng gives Ao Le the Eastern Emperor Bell, allowing her to gain near-invincible defense against opponents below the level of true supreme treasures or top-tier innate treasures.
  • As the Guangyuan Immortal Court launches an invasion of the Immortal Qin Empire, Lu Qingfeng ignores the war and gives the Heavenly Demon Blood-Transforming Divine Saber to Zhang Shu, greatly strengthening the Earth Immortals’ military forces.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le retreat into the Star Sea Realm’s depths to refine their treasures. Seven hundred years pass in the dream realm, while only an instant passes in reality.
  • When Lu Qingfeng resumes cultivating the Cult Master-level Twelve Capital Demon God Art, he discovers that it functions poorly in the original space-time. The problem is not spiritual energy or environmental conditions, but the altered state of the world itself.
  • He realizes that the Heavenly Dao Sage has already gathered and transformed the scattered thoughts of the Twelve Ancestral Shamans into Pan’s body. Therefore, the foundation on which Lu Qingfeng’s cultivation method depends has been removed.
  • Lu Qingfeng concludes that his path to directly attaining the Dao through the Twelve Capital Demon God Art is blocked unless the Heavenly Dao Sage falls and the Ancestral Shamans’ thoughts scatter again.
  • Rather than abandoning the art, he decides to use it to become overwhelmingly powerful beneath the Golden Immortal or Sage realm before seeking a way to break through the obstruction.

Character Developments

  • Lu Qingfeng becomes more cautious and perceptive regarding the origin and limitations of the treasures. He recognizes that their temporary nature makes them unsuitable for long-term reliance, but valuable for studying laws and divine abilities.
  • His understanding of cultivation matures. He rejects the arrogant idea that he must immediately create an entirely original path, acknowledging that one must first learn from existing masters before surpassing them.
  • He also recognizes his current limitations: as a Heavenly Immortal, he lacks the qualification to dismiss established paths or claim superiority over the Sages.
  • Ao Le is astonished by the quality of the new treasures and accepts the Eastern Emperor Bell, though she is disappointed that it can only be used for three thousand years.
  • Zhang Shu receives the Heavenly Demon Blood-Transforming Divine Saber, becoming far more capable in the coming war.

Significant Themes

  • Imitation versus originality: The chapter explores the saying, “Those who learn from me live; those who resemble me die.” Lu Qingfeng concludes that imitation is not inherently shameful; learning from predecessors is the necessary first stage of growth.
  • Cultivation and blocked paths: A path that was viable in one space-time may become impossible in another because history, cosmic laws, and the actions of higher beings have changed.
  • Temporary power versus lasting advancement: Though the borrowed treasures will disappear after three thousand years, the insights Lu Qingfeng gains from them can permanently improve his cultivation.
  • Humility and self-awareness: Lu Qingfeng realizes that he has been aiming too far ahead by worrying about blazing a new path before mastering the one before him.
  • Power and karmic consequences: Several powerful treasures carry immense karmic burdens or attract dangerous enemies, showing that strength often comes with hidden costs.

Character Interactions

  • Lu Qingfeng explains the treasures’ origins and abilities to Ao Le, deepening her understanding of the world’s supreme artifacts.
  • He gives Ao Le the Eastern Emperor Bell specifically to protect her, demonstrating his concern for her safety and his willingness to place powerful resources in her hands.
  • Lu Qingfeng comforts Ao Le when she laments the bell’s temporary nature, encouraging her to refine it and make the most of the opportunity.
  • Lu Qingfeng indirectly supports Zhang Shu and the Guangyuan Immortal Court’s campaign by handing Zhang Shu the Heavenly Demon Blood-Transforming Divine Saber.
  • The chapter also establishes Lu Qingfeng’s intellectual relationship with the unseen Heavenly Dao Sage: although they do not interact directly, Lu Qingfeng recognizes that his own cultivation path is dependent on—and obstructed by—the Sage’s earlier actions.

Ch. 705Yellow-Brow Patriarch, Five-Colored Divine Light VS. Human-Seeding Bag!

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Lu Qingfeng decides to return to fragments of time and space to cultivate, where remnants of the Ancestral Shamans’ thoughts still exist. Though he cannot prove the Dao there, he can rapidly improve his cultivation, magic power, and understanding of the Dao before bringing those gains back.
  • He plans to combine the Yellow Court Scripture with the Twelve Capital Demon God Art, seeking a more balanced and stable cultivation path rather than relying solely on the art’s aggressive, battle-oriented principles.
  • Lu Qingfeng refines the Twelve Capital Netherworld King Banners and uses them to establish the Twelve All-Heaven Divine Fiend Formation. He studies the formation, the Demon Gods, and the banners’ construction while protecting Ao Le as she cultivates.
  • He also continues refining the Five-Colored Divine Light, incorporating Kong Xuan’s Numinous Treasure into his own divine ability and elevating it into a Supreme Grand Divine Ability.
  • After 120 years, Lu Qingfeng’s cultivation has greatly advanced. He is cultivating in the Star Sea Realm when a yellow-browed man arrives after searching for over a century.
  • The newcomer, Yellow-Brow Ancestor—servant and disciple of the East-Coming Buddha—uses the Human-Seeds Bag to swallow much of Lu Qingfeng’s army stationed within the Zhou Tian Star-Dipper Grand Formation.
  • Recognizing the bag and the intruder as the same yellow-browed boy he encountered in a fragment of time and space, Lu Qingfeng attacks with the Five-Colored Divine Light. The divine light easily captures the Human-Seeds Bag.
  • Lu Qingfeng realizes that the bag had previously been difficult to counter only because the East-Coming Buddha was secretly controlling it. Without the Buddha’s assistance, Lu Qingfeng’s enhanced Five-Colored Divine Light overwhelms it.
  • Yellow-Brow Ancestor becomes cautious and attempts diplomacy. He explains that he came searching for the corpses of old friends, which had been stolen and brought to this location. He had borrowed the Human-Seeds Bag from the East-Coming Buddha after Guanyin Bodhisattva helped locate the bodies through divination.
  • Lu Qingfeng learns that the attack was unrelated to their earlier conflict in the time-space fragment. Wary of the East-Coming Buddha and Yellow-Brow Ancestor’s Buddhist backing, he returns the bag and allows the captured troops to be released.

Character Developments

  • Lu Qingfeng: Becomes more confident and powerful after refining the Five-Colored Divine Light and the Netherworld King Banners. He shows strategic restraint, choosing diplomacy over conflict once he understands Yellow-Brow Ancestor’s background and the risks of provoking the East-Coming Buddha.
  • Ao Le: Continues cultivating under Lu Qingfeng’s protection, though she does not directly participate in the confrontation.
  • Yellow-Brow Ancestor: Reveals himself as cunning, cautious, and adaptable. He initially acts aggressively, but quickly shifts to politeness and explanation after losing the Human-Seeds Bag and recognizing Lu Qingfeng’s strength.
  • East-Coming Buddha and Guanyin Bodhisattva: Do not appear directly, but their influence is significant. The East-Coming Buddha’s control makes the Human-Seeds Bag far more dangerous, while Guanyin’s divination enables Yellow-Brow Ancestor to locate the Divine Tomb.

Significant Themes

  • Cultivation through time and space: Time-space fragments offer Lu Qingfeng a shortcut to power and knowledge, allowing him to study lost techniques and gain insights unavailable in the present.
  • Forging one’s own path: Lu Qingfeng begins moving beyond simply imitating ancient sages, seeking to merge the Yellow Court Scripture with the Demon God Art and create a steadier, more balanced method of cultivation.
  • Power and perception: The same treasure can have vastly different effectiveness depending on who controls it. The Human-Seeds Bag is nearly unstoppable under the East-Coming Buddha but is easily countered when used by Yellow-Brow Ancestor alone.
  • Caution among powerful factions: Both sides recognize the dangers of provoking hidden backers. Lu Qingfeng and Yellow-Brow Ancestor avoid conflict because each suspects the other has formidable support.
  • Misunderstanding and diplomacy: Lu Qingfeng initially assumes Yellow-Brow Ancestor has come seeking revenge, but the conflict is resolved once their misunderstanding is clarified.

Character Interactions

  • Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le share a protective cultivation arrangement, with Lu Qingfeng using the formation to shield her without disrupting her progress.
  • Yellow-Brow Ancestor’s forceful invasion brings him into direct conflict with Lu Qingfeng, whose Five-Colored Divine Light defeats his Human-Seeds Bag.
  • After the confrontation, Yellow-Brow Ancestor adopts a respectful tone and explains his mission. Lu Qingfeng deliberately conceals what he knows about their earlier encounter, tests Yellow-Brow’s identity, and ultimately chooses to return the treasure.
  • Their interaction ends in wary mutual respect: neither side wishes to reveal too much or risk a confrontation involving the East-Coming Buddha or other powerful backers.

Ch. 706Cutting Off the Head and Tail, Carving It into a Bamboo Staff!

Chapter Summary: “Snip Off the Ends, Shave It into a Bamboo Staff!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Lu Qingfeng introduces his wife, Ao Le, to Yellow-Browed Boy and reveals that the Divine Tomb contains the bodies of many immortals, gods, and demons.
  • Yellow-Browed Boy identifies four weasel spirits among the tombs as his deceased brothers. They had served under him when he ruled Lesser Western Heaven and were killed during the conflict with the Great Sage.
  • Ao Le retrieves their bodies from the Divine Tomb. Yellow-Browed Boy, overwhelmed with gratitude and grief, takes them away to bury or preserve them properly.
  • Lu Qingfeng realizes that Yellow-Browed Boy may reveal their encounter to East-Coming Buddha, potentially exposing Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le’s identities. He immediately prepares to leave.
  • Lu Qingfeng merges the Star Sea Realm with another world, renaming the combined realm the Guangyuan Realm. He establishes two powerful formations—one governing the heavens and one controlling the earth—and uses the Eastern Emperor Bell to conceal the realm.
  • Because the bell’s protection will last only three thousand years, Lu Qingfeng becomes determined to improve his cultivation rapidly.
  • He enters a dreamlike fragment of spacetime through the Carefree Dream Path spell, using the body of another dead immortal as an anchor. This time, he leaves Ao Le behind to guard the realm and continue refining the Eastern Emperor Bell.
  • Lu Qingfeng arrives in Southern Jambudvipa near Gold-Silver Mountain, where Gold-and-Silver Great King rules a demon stronghold.
  • While inhabiting the form of a bamboo plant, Lu Qingfeng is cut down by a wandering monkey, stripped of his branches, and turned into a bamboo staff.
  • The monkey enters Gold-Silver Mountain, where demons pursue it because Gold-and-Silver Great King has forbidden monkeys from the region. The monkey escapes.
  • The monkey later calls itself the “Handsome Monkey King,” causing Lu Qingfeng to suspect that it might be the legendary future Great Sage. He dismisses the possibility as unlikely but remains cautious.
  • The monkey asks woodcutters whether immortals live nearby. After learning that demons in the mountains eat monkey brains, it thanks one of the woodcutters and gives him a peach.
  • Immediately afterward, however, the monkey becomes enraged and threatens to kill the demons, revealing both its kindness and its volatile temper.

Character Developments

  • Lu Qingfeng: Demonstrates caution, strategic thinking, and concern for his allies. He avoids conflict with Yellow-Browed Boy, rapidly fortifies the Guangyuan Realm, and recognizes the danger posed by powerful Buddhist figures. His transformation into a bamboo staff humiliates him, but he accepts it calmly because it does not prevent cultivation. His attitude toward the monkey shifts repeatedly—from amusement, to suspicion, to fondness, and finally irritation.
  • Ao Le: Acts as Lu Qingfeng’s trusted partner and helps inspect the Divine Tomb and recover Yellow-Browed Boy’s brothers. She is also entrusted with guarding the Guangyuan Realm and wielding the Eastern Emperor Bell.
  • Yellow-Browed Boy: Reveals a deeply emotional and loyal side. Though once a demon king, he has spent years searching for his brothers’ remains and is profoundly grateful when Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le return them to him.
  • The Monkey: Appears intelligent, energetic, and capable of human speech. It is courteous toward helpful humans but impulsive, aggressive, and easily angered. Its claim to be the Handsome Monkey King suggests that it may be the future legendary Demon Monkey.
  • Gold-and-Silver Great King: Though mostly discussed rather than shown, his cruelty toward monkeys establishes him as an oppressive demon ruler whose eventual death is already known to Lu Qingfeng.

Significant Themes

  • The danger of exposure: Lu Qingfeng’s greatest immediate concern is remaining hidden from powerful figures such as East-Coming Buddha and Guanyin Bodhisattva.
  • Preparation and survival: The construction of layered formations and use of the Eastern Emperor Bell emphasize the importance of planning ahead in a dangerous world.
  • Fate and historical knowledge: Lu Qingfeng knows the future deaths of several characters, including Gold-and-Silver Great King, yet must avoid changing events too openly.
  • Humiliation and adaptability: Becoming a walking staff is deeply undignified, but Lu Qingfeng turns the situation into an opportunity to cultivate.
  • Karma and irony: Lu Qingfeng jokes about others’ misfortunes, only to experience his own comic humiliation. Gold-and-Silver Great King’s persecution of monkeys also foreshadows his eventual death at the hands of one.
  • Contrasting nature of the monkey: The monkey combines generosity and politeness with violence and resentment, suggesting the complexity of its future character.

Important Character Interactions

  • Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le: Their relationship is cooperative and trusting, with Ao Le sharing information telepathically and assisting in major decisions.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Yellow-Browed Boy: Their interaction begins cautiously but ends peacefully after Lu Qingfeng returns the bodies of Yellow-Browed Boy’s brothers.
  • Yellow-Browed Boy and his brothers: His grief and long search for their remains reveal strong familial devotion.
  • The monkey and the demons: The demons pursue the monkey because of Gold-and-Silver Great King’s anti-monkey policy, creating the chapter’s main action sequence.
  • The monkey and the woodcutters: The monkey behaves respectfully, asks for guidance, and rewards kindness with a peach, showing that it is capable of gratitude despite its violent impulses.
  • Lu Qingfeng and the monkey: Their relationship is one-sided but central to the chapter. Lu Qingfeng is physically carried by the monkey as a staff, observes its behavior, and becomes increasingly wary that he may have encountered the future Great Sage.

Ch. 707Bamboo, Bamboo, I'm Not Taking You as My Master Anymore!

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Lu Qingfeng, transformed from a bamboo spirit into a four-foot-long bamboo staff, is carried away from Gold-Silver Mountain by a monkey.
  • The monkey disguises himself as a human and spends nearly ten years traveling through Southern Jambudvipa, searching earnestly for an Immortal, Buddha, or sage who can teach him immortality.
  • Despite being mocked, beaten, chased by animals, and repeatedly driven away, the monkey remains determined. He carefully protects and cleans the bamboo staff, treating it as a precious treasure.
  • Moved by the monkey’s sincerity, Lu Qingfeng secretly uses his accumulated solar, lunar, and stellar essence to heal the monkey’s injuries. He gradually decides that he will take the monkey as his disciple once he obtains an Immortal body.
  • The monkey eventually reaches the Western Sea, assumes that Immortals may live beyond it, and builds a raft. Although it has neither sail nor oar, the raft miraculously crosses the sea and reaches Western Ox-Ho Continent.
  • Lu Qingfeng begins to suspect that the monkey may be the legendary Stone Monkey destined to become the Handsome Monkey King, though he resists believing that such a coincidence is possible.
  • After another year of wandering, the monkey reaches a magnificent mountain and hears a song associated with Crescent Moon Three Stars Cave. Lu Qingfeng realizes that the monkey has found the mountain of Bodhi Patriarch, a powerful Sage.
  • Fearing Bodhi Patriarch and unwilling to interfere with the monkey’s destined encounter, Lu Qingfeng flees. The monkey abandons the opportunity to seek a master and pursues the fleeing bamboo staff instead.
  • Lu Qingfeng escapes ten thousand li away, but the monkey follows him the entire distance. When Lu Qingfeng tries to flee again, the monkey begs him to stop, declaring that he will no longer seek a master.
  • The chapter ends with the revelation that the monkey is not the Stone Monkey from the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, but Six Ears—a separate monkey whose identity Lu Qingfeng had mistaken.

Character Developments

  • Lu Qingfeng: He develops genuine affection for the monkey and begins viewing himself as a potential master rather than merely an unwilling companion. However, his caution and fear of altering fate ultimately lead him to abandon the monkey. He is also forced to reconsider his assumptions when the monkey’s identity is revealed.
  • Six Ears: Six Ears is shown to be extraordinarily sincere, persistent, resourceful, and emotionally attached to Lu Qingfeng. Though he seeks immortality for years, his attachment to the bamboo staff becomes stronger than his desire to find a master. His pursuit across ten thousand li demonstrates his loyalty and determination.
  • Bodhi Patriarch: Though he never appears directly, his presence is highly significant. His status as an already-realized Sage makes Lu Qingfeng fear being noticed or forcibly drawn into a larger destiny.
  • The legendary Stone Monkey/Wukong: He functions as an unseen point of comparison. Lu Qingfeng mistakenly interprets Six Ears’s journey as evidence that he is the destined Monkey King.

Significant Themes

  • Fate versus coincidence: Lu Qingfeng repeatedly wonders whether Six Ears is the legendary monkey whose destiny he knows. The chapter explores whether individuals are bound to predetermined roles or whether similar events can happen to different people.
  • Loyalty and attachment: Six Ears values his relationship with the bamboo staff more than the chance to attain immortality, suggesting that companionship can outweigh ambition.
  • The sincerity of the seeker: Six Ears’s persistence contrasts sharply with ordinary mortals obsessed with fame, wealth, and social advancement.
  • Fear of interfering with destiny: Lu Qingfeng chooses separation because he fears disrupting the future or provoking a powerful Sage, even though he genuinely wants to guide Six Ears.
  • Misjudgment and mistaken identity: Lu Qingfeng’s long-standing assumption that the monkey is the Stone Monkey collapses at the chapter’s conclusion, creating a major revelation and recontextualizing the entire journey.

Important Character Interactions

  • The monkey protects, cleans, and constantly carries Lu Qingfeng, while Lu Qingfeng secretly heals him and grows emotionally attached.
  • Lu Qingfeng privately promises to make the monkey his disciple, but never reveals his true identity or abilities.
  • When the monkey reaches Bodhi Patriarch’s mountain, Lu Qingfeng flees to avoid danger. The monkey’s decision to chase him rather than pursue immortality reveals the depth of their bond.
  • Their final exchange overturns Lu Qingfeng’s assumptions: the monkey insists he is Six Ears, not the Stone Monkey, leaving Lu Qingfeng shocked and uncertain about what this means for both of their futures.

Ch. 708Three Years, Then Three More—Thirteen Years Passed in a Flash!

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Lu Qingfeng discovers that the monkey he has accompanied for years is not the Enlightened Stone Monkey, but the Six-Eared Macaque, one of the Four Monkeys Who Roamed the World.
  • Six Ears explains that he abandoned the opportunity to enter the Crescent Moon Three Stars Cave because he did not want to leave Lu Qingfeng, whom he regards as his protector and companion.
  • Although Lu Qingfeng worries that Six Ears is destined to die during the “True and False Monkey Kings” episode of Journey to the West, he decides to remain with and protect him, believing he can intervene without disrupting the greater course of history.
  • Six Ears recounts his origins: after witnessing an old monkey die, he left his mountains to seek immortality. He endured mistreatment from humans and beasts before meeting Lu Qingfeng.
  • Lu Qingfeng begins teaching Six Ears. For three years, he focuses on literacy, manners, scripture, Dao principles, and practical labor such as gardening, gathering firewood, and carrying water.
  • After this period of discipline, Lu Qingfeng teaches him the Twelve Capital Demon God Art, Transformation Technique, Cloud Summit Step, and other powerful arts.
  • Six Ears progresses with extraordinary speed, reaching the Late Void-Returning Stage after only three years of formal cultivation and preparing to face his First Great Heavenly Tribulation.
  • Six Ears uses his emerging listening abilities to detect that the Stone Monkey has found Spirit Terrace Inch-Fang Mountain and entered the Crescent Moon Three Stars Cave to become Bodhi Patriarch’s disciple.
  • Lu Qingfeng encourages Six Ears to cultivate harder so that the Stone Monkey will not surpass him. Six Ears responds proudly but privately feels the pressure to compete.
  • Seven more years pass, bringing the total time covered to thirteen years.

Character Developments

  • Lu Qingfeng: Moves from cautious observation to genuine emotional attachment. He initially worries about altering destiny but ultimately chooses to follow his feelings and care for Six Ears. He becomes the monkey’s teacher, guardian, and moral guide.
  • Six-Eared Macaque: Develops from an immature, lonely, and somewhat ordinary monkey into a gifted cultivator. His six ears and supernatural perception gradually awaken. He demonstrates loyalty, gratitude, innocence, pride, and a strong desire not to be abandoned.
  • Stone Monkey: Does not appear directly, but his entry into Bodhi Patriarch’s school establishes him as Six Ears’ future rival and creates pressure for Six Ears to improve.
  • Bodhi Patriarch and other powerful beings: Remain mostly offstage, but their influence shapes the chapter’s concerns about destiny, hidden knowledge, and the limits of altering established events.

Significant Themes

  • Loyalty and gratitude: Six Ears values Lu Qingfeng’s kindness more than the promise of immortality, choosing companionship over a potentially superior cultivation opportunity.
  • Fate versus personal choice: Lu Qingfeng knows Six Ears’ tragic future but decides that helping him may not fundamentally disrupt the larger course of history.
  • Mentorship and growth: The chapter emphasizes that talent alone is insufficient; Six Ears must first learn discipline, humility, etiquette, and perseverance.
  • Hidden identity and destiny: The revelation that the monkey is Six Ears reframes familiar events from Journey to the West and raises questions about what is historically fixed and what can be changed.
  • Innocence and ambition: Six Ears remains childlike and eager to show off, yet his rivalry with the Stone Monkey begins to motivate serious cultivation.
  • The nature of knowledge: Six Ears’ ability to hear distant events and understand hidden truths contrasts with his immaturity, showing that supernatural insight does not automatically equal wisdom.

Character Interactions

  • Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears share a warm, affectionate bond. Six Ears constantly circles and chats with the bamboo staff, while Lu Qingfeng is amused and emotionally moved by his companionship.
  • Six Ears openly reassures Lu Qingfeng that abandoning him would be his greatest regret, while Lu Qingfeng warns him that refusing the Immortal Mountain may later become a source of regret.
  • Lu Qingfeng assumes the role of teacher through both daily discipline and formal instruction, shaping Six Ears’ character before teaching him advanced techniques.
  • The Stone Monkey’s advancement becomes an indirect source of rivalry. Six Ears mocks him outwardly but responds by cultivating more intensely.
  • Lu Qingfeng’s relationship with Six Ears contrasts with the distant, secretive influence of Bodhi Patriarch, highlighting the personal nature of their teacher-student bond.

Ch. 709Bamboo, Bamboo, I Have Insights Again!

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • During the night, Six Ears secretly listens to someone or something in the west, apparently overhearing discussion about himself and the Stone Monkey. He is amused and angered, but keeps the matter to himself.
  • The next morning, Six Ears proudly announces that he has gained another cultivation insight and prepares to “teach” Lu Qingfeng, who remains in his Green Bamboo form.
  • Six Ears shares several powerful techniques and modified arts, including:
    • An altered version of the Twelve Capital Demon God Art
    • Seventy-Two Transformations
    • Outer Law Incarnation
    • An improved Cloud Summit Step capable of crossing 108,000 li in one leap
    • Three-Heads Six-Arms
    • Heaven-and-Earth Manifestation
    • Carrying Mountains and Chasing the Moon
    • Wind-Calling Rain-Summoning
    • Overturning Rivers and Turning Seas
  • Lu Qingfeng repeatedly studies and incorporates these insights, greatly advancing his own cultivation and Divine Abilities.
  • After several years, Lu Qingfeng realizes that Six Ears has not actually invented all these techniques. Through his special attribute panel, he identifies them as secretly learned versions of famous arts, including the Eighty-Nine Arcane Art, Seventy-Two Transformations, Outer Law Incarnation, and Somersault Cloud.
  • Six Ears admits that he secretly learned the arts because he felt inferior to the Stone Monkey. He breaks down emotionally, believing Lu Qingfeng sees him as less talented.
  • Lu Qingfeng comforts him by explaining that the Stone Monkey has enjoyed vastly superior cultivation conditions under Bodhi Patriarch, including abundant spiritual energy and direct instruction from a Sage.
  • Lu Qingfeng reassures Six Ears that becoming a Heavenly Immortal in thirteen years is an astonishing achievement and that, under equal conditions, he may not be inferior to the Stone Monkey.
  • Recognizing that Six Ears needs practical experience and confidence, Lu Qingfeng decides to leave the bamboo grove, transform into a young man, and take Six Ears on an adventure. He already has a destination in mind.

Character Developments

  • Six Ears: Demonstrates extraordinary intelligence, natural Dao comprehension, and creativity by adapting powerful arts into even more refined forms. However, beneath his pride and showmanship, he is insecure and deeply troubled by the Stone Monkey’s faster progress. His emotional outburst reveals his childish need for recognition and reassurance.
  • Lu Qingfeng: Benefits enormously from Six Ears’ insights and begins to recognize the true quality of the monkey’s talent. He shifts from amused suspicion to empathy, understanding that Six Ears’ deception came from insecurity rather than malice. He also decides to help Six Ears gain confidence through real combat and experience.
  • Stone Monkey: Does not appear directly, but his rapid advancement under Bodhi Patriarch serves as the central comparison motivating Six Ears’ insecurity. His future legendary achievements also make Lu Qingfeng question how Six Ears could eventually match him yet later be killed so easily.

Significant Themes

  • Talent versus opportunity: Six Ears’ slower progress is shown to result largely from inferior cultivation resources and instruction, not a lack of ability.
  • Recognition and insecurity: Six Ears’ boastfulness masks his fear of being viewed as inferior. His secret study of famous techniques is an attempt to prove his worth.
  • Mentorship and compassion: Lu Qingfeng moves beyond simply using Six Ears’ insights and responds to his emotional needs, encouraging him as both a cultivator and a companion.
  • Cultivation through adaptation: Six Ears does not merely copy techniques; he transforms and improves them, showing that innovation and comprehension can be more important than formal inheritance.
  • Foreshadowing and destiny: The chapter contrasts Six Ears’ immense potential with his uncertain future, hinting at the eventual conflict between him and the Stone Monkey.

Character Interactions

  • Six Ears repeatedly adopts an exaggerated, self-important manner while presenting his insights to Lu Qingfeng.
  • Lu Qingfeng humorously teases him about being a bamboo that cannot “come closer,” but remains patient and eager to learn.
  • When Lu Qingfeng exposes Six Ears’ secret borrowing of techniques, Six Ears becomes defensive before confessing his feelings of inferiority.
  • Lu Qingfeng reassures and flatters him until Six Ears recovers his confidence, revealing their relationship as a mixture of teacher-student guidance, friendship, teasing, and mutual reliance.
  • The chapter ends with Lu Qingfeng taking responsibility for Six Ears’ next stage of growth by preparing to bring him into the wider world.

Ch. 710I Am the Handsome Monkey King Sun Wukong, Lord of Water-Curtain Cave on Flower-Fruit Mountain in the Divine Continent of East Victory!

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • After attaining the Dao, Six Ears leaves his former teacher and travels with Lu Qingfeng. His body has become light, and he is thrilled by his newfound ability to fly across vast distances.
  • Returning to Southern Jambudvipa, Six Ears asks to visit Gold-Silver Mountain. He remembers the demons there who once tried to eat him and wants revenge.
  • Lu Qingfeng agrees, partly to test Six Ears’s combat ability and partly because he intends to deal with Qin Zhen, who is expected to arrive afterward.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears infiltrate Gold-Silver Cave disguised as mice and launch a surprise attack on the Gold-and-Silver Great King. However, the demon survives, surprising Lu Qingfeng and causing him to question the history he remembers.
  • Six Ears attacks first but is quickly overwhelmed. Lu Qingfeng joins the battle, wielding his powerful Pure Tranquil Bamboo Staff.
  • The fight becomes a prolonged struggle. The Gold-and-Silver Great King proves far stronger than expected, possessing deep Heaven Immortal cultivation, excellent saber skills, and a magic rope made from his own hair.
  • Lu Qingfeng escapes the binding rope by transforming into wind, while Six Ears counters with the immense Heaven-and-Earth Manifestation technique.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears fight together from dusk until nightfall, severely damaging Gold-Silver Mountain and scattering or killing many of the Great King’s demon soldiers.
  • Though the two eventually begin to tire, Lu Qingfeng refuses to use his strongest Divine Abilities and treats the fight as valuable combat practice.
  • Just as the battle reaches its limit, a third monkey arrives: Sun Wukong, the Stone Monkey and newly established cave master of Water-Curtain Cave. He has been drawn by the battle’s disturbance and condemns the Gold-and-Silver Great King for his cruelty.

Character Developments

  • Six Ears: Displays excitement, confidence, and a growing sense of strength after completing his studies. However, his recklessness and lack of weapons leave him at a disadvantage against the Gold-and-Silver Great King. His use of Heaven-and-Earth Manifestation demonstrates major progress.
  • Lu Qingfeng: Acts as the calmer and more strategic companion. He initially underestimates the enemy but adapts quickly, joining the fight to save Six Ears and using the battle to refine his own martial techniques. He becomes increasingly intrigued by the discrepancy between his expectations and actual events.
  • Gold-and-Silver Great King: Revealed as a powerful and experienced Heaven Immortal rather than a minor demon. His hatred of monkeys stems from years of being bullied by them before he attained cultivation. His concern for his demon soldiers also exposes a possessive, almost protective side beneath his cruelty.
  • Sun Wukong: Makes his entrance as an immature but spiritually exceptional young monkey. Though he lacks armor and weapons, he already shows the confidence, moral boldness, and imposing presence associated with the future Great Sage.

Significant Themes

  • Growth through conflict: Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears use the battle not merely to defeat an enemy but to temper their skills and measure their newly acquired strength.
  • The unpredictability of fate: Lu Qingfeng’s knowledge of future events appears unreliable. The Gold-and-Silver Great King survives despite the historical account he remembers, suggesting that his interference may be altering the timeline.
  • The meeting of legendary figures: The chapter brings Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears into contact with Sun Wukong, creating the possibility of major changes to the established story.
  • Revenge and prejudice: Six Ears seeks revenge for his past mistreatment, while the Gold-and-Silver Great King’s hatred of monkeys reflects how past humiliation can become generalized hatred.
  • The cost of power: The clash between immortals devastates the mountain and causes heavy casualties among the lesser demons, emphasizing how ordinary beings suffer when powerful figures fight.

Character Interactions

  • Six Ears enthusiastically urges Lu Qingfeng to return to Gold-Silver Mountain, while Lu Qingfeng calmly supports the plan for strategic reasons.
  • Six Ears attacks the Gold-and-Silver Great King recklessly and is beaten back, forcing Lu Qingfeng to intervene.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears gradually coordinate as partners, fighting side by side against the stronger demon and encouraging each other through the battle.
  • The Gold-and-Silver Great King treats both monkeys as hated enemies, driven by old resentment toward monkeys.
  • Six Ears immediately recognizes Sun Wukong and identifies him to Lu Qingfeng. Lu Qingfeng is shocked to encounter the young Stone Monkey and realizes that the timing may connect directly to the events he has been anticipating.
  • Sun Wukong arrives as an outsider who sees the battle as evidence of the Great King’s evil, setting up a likely confrontation among all three parties.

  • The unpredictability of destiny: Wukong’s unexpected battle causes events to diverge from the planned Journey to the West narrative, forcing higher powers to intervene.
  • Growth through failure: Wukong’s defeat exposes his lack of experience and teaches him that talent and powerful techniques are not enough against a truly superior opponent.
  • Rivalry becoming fellowship: The shared battle begins transforming the hostility between Wukong and Six Ears into mutual respect.
  • Hidden manipulation: The conflict reveals that powerful Buddhist figures are quietly guiding events to ensure Wukong follows the intended path.
  • Power and humility: Wukong’s confidence is shaken when his techniques fail, while Lu Qingfeng’s intervention demonstrates the value of judgment and restraint.

Character Interactions

  • Lu Qingfeng watches Wukong carefully, torn between avoiding him and protecting him.
  • Lu Qingfeng saves Wukong from the demon’s killing blow, while Six Ears assists Lu Qingfeng in holding the demon back.
  • Wukong repays their aid by lifting and throwing Gold-Silver Mountain, allowing the three to fight cooperatively.
  • Afterward, Wukong thanks Six Ears for saving him, and Six Ears modestly dismisses the favor. Their exchange marks a tentative reconciliation.
  • The chapter ends with Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears discovering that the supernatural wind has unexpectedly delivered them to Wukong’s home, Mountain of Flowers and Fruit.

  • Although Wukong’s six sworn brothers encourage him to disregard the Dragon Palace and even boast about attacking Heaven, Wukong suspects they are deliberately provoking him.
  • Later, Black and White Impermanence attempt to seize Wukong’s soul. Because he is already beyond the jurisdiction of the Three Realms and Five Elements, he detects them and drives them back with one blow.
  • Wukong realizes that both the Dragon Palace and Netherworld are manipulating events to provoke him and create charges against him. Distrusting his sworn brothers, he seeks advice from Lu Qingfeng instead.
  • Lu Qingfeng is puzzled that Wukong has become so perceptive and cautious, unlike the reckless Monkey King of the usual Journey to the West narrative.
  • He concludes that his own presence may have disrupted the destined course of events, just as it previously altered Zhou Qing’s fate.
  • Rather than continue hiding his knowledge, Lu Qingfeng decides to tell Wukong the truth. He demands secrecy, and Wukong agrees. At that moment, Lu Qingfeng’s divine soul clears and his stagnant cultivation advances, suggesting that this decision aligns with his destiny or a greater principle.

Ch. 714Nine Great Sages, Peach Garden!

Chapter 704 Summary: “Nine Great Sages, Peach Orchard!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • After Sun Wukong’s assault on the Netherworld and the deletion of all monkey names from the Book of Life and Death, Heaven chooses appeasement over confrontation. Star Lord Chang Geng invites him to Heaven, where he is placed in charge of the Imperial Horse Stables.
  • Wukong rebels after discovering that the position is humiliating. The Jade Emperor sends Li Jing, Nezha, Giant Spirit God, and other commanders to subdue him, but Wukong defeats the Heavenly forces and injures Nezha.
  • Wukong declares himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, while eight demon kings become the other Great Sages:
    • Bull Demon King
    • Flood Dragon Demon King
    • Peng Demon King
    • Lion-Camel King
    • Macaque King
    • King Yurun
    • King Green Bamboo
    • King Tongming
  • Unable to defeat Wukong directly, Heaven grants him the title of Great Sage Equal to Heaven without salary or real authority. He is given a residence beside the Peach Orchard and allowed to wander freely.
  • To keep him occupied, Heaven appoints Wukong guardian of the Peach Orchard. Wukong immediately suspects a trap, realizing that placing a monkey in charge of immortal peaches is unlikely to be innocent.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears reveal themselves from their disguises as King Green Bamboo and King Tongming. The three decide to exploit the orchard rather than follow Heaven’s intended plan.
  • They consume vast quantities of the Peaches of Immortality and absorb the orchard’s concentrated star essence. Their cultivation rises dramatically over three hundred years.
  • Lu Qingfeng reaches the peak of the Heavenly Immortal realm and deduces several abilities into Supreme Grand Divine Abilities:
    • Reversed Grand Void Glazed Wall
    • Transformation Technique
    • Invisibility Technique
    • Cloud Summit Step
Along with his Five-Colored Divine Light, these give him exceptional abilities in concealment, transformation, escape, and combat.
  • Wukong and Six Ears advance even further, reaching the level of Golden Immortal Dao attainment.
  • The Seven Fairies arrive to gather peaches for the Heavenly Peach Banquet. Wukong allows them into the orchard, pretends to converse with them, then immobilizes them and rushes toward Tusita Palace, setting the stage for the next major disruption.

Character Development

  • Sun Wukong grows from a rebellious demon king into a powerful, confident challenger to Heaven. His defeat of Nezha and the Heavenly armies reinforces his pride, suspicion, and willingness to defy authority.
  • Lu Qingfeng becomes increasingly calculating and opportunistic. Rather than merely supporting Wukong, he uses the Peach Orchard to improve his own cultivation and strengthen his survival techniques. His focus shifts toward concealment, foresight, and avoiding detection by supreme beings.
  • Six Ears remains greedy and opportunistic, enthusiastically joining Wukong and Lu Qingfeng in consuming the immortal peaches. His innate potential allows him to reach Golden Immortal Dao attainment.
  • The Jade Emperor and Heavenly Court are portrayed as politically cautious. Instead of risking prolonged war, they repeatedly use nominal appointments and indirect schemes to control Wukong.

Significant Themes

  • Cultivation and unequal progress: The chapter emphasizes the enormous gaps between stages of immortality and the importance of innate potential, resources, and divine techniques.

  • Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears secretly collaborate with Wukong in the Peach Orchard, sharing its treasures while reinforcing their alliance.
  • Lu Qingfeng warns Wukong that Heaven is likely plotting against him; Wukong accepts this judgment and chooses open defiance.

  • The other Great Sages: Their earlier unity appears uncertain, as they seem to compete for fame and fortune. However, pressure from the demon kings forces them to contribute troops and participate actively.
  • King Green Bamboo and King Tongming: Show greater commitment to the demon cause by contributing troops from their own territories. King Tongming becomes the first to articulate the grand goal of rebuilding the Demon Court.
  • Lu Qingfeng: Observes the rivalries and ambitions among the Great Sages while covertly participating in the fighting. He recognizes Bull Demon King’s leadership tactics and remains attentive to the larger political situation.
  • The demon kings: Transform from frightened, suspicious followers into an energized and ambitious army. Their victories give them confidence that Heaven may not be invincible.

3. Significant Themes

  • Charisma and leadership: Reputation, courage, and the ability to act decisively determine who gains influence among the demon kings.
  • Unity through crisis: Although the Great Sages are individually ambitious and distrustful, the Heavenly Court’s attack forces them into cooperation.
  • Political manipulation: Wukong’s earlier actions draw others into conflict, while the Great Sages must perform publicly to maintain their authority and legitimacy.
  • Perception versus reality: The Heavenly Court’s enormous army appears overwhelming, but its individual gods prove less powerful than expected, emboldening the demons.
  • Ambition and momentum: Initial resistance gradually becomes a genuine revolutionary movement as victories and military numbers make the demon kings believe they can challenge Heaven.

4. Character Interactions

  • The demon kings pressure King Yurun to live up to his title, forcing him into combat and turning his victory into a morale-boosting spectacle.
  • Bull Demon King takes the lead in battle, prompting the other Great Sages to follow and compete for recognition.

  • King Tongming’s oath inspires the entire demon host, transforming a military alliance into a shared ideological movement against the Heavenly Court.

Ch. 717The Nine Saints—Smoke and Clouds Disperse!

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • The Jade Emperor summons Erlang Divine Manifestation True Lord, who leads the Six Sages of Mount Mei and twelve hundred Grasshead Gods into battle.
  • Burning Lamp Primordial Buddha unexpectedly returns after witnessing the demonic upheaval. Guanyin Bodhisattva also agrees to intervene, recognizing that Erlang God alone cannot quickly end the conflict.
  • Guanyin attacks the Handsome Monkey King with a willow branch from her Pure Jade Bottle. However, the “Monkey King” struck is revealed to be an Outer Law Incarnation rather than Wukong’s true body.
  • Erlang God’s Third Eye exposes that King Green Bamboo and King Tongming are also merely Outer Law Incarnations. Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears—who had been impersonating the two Great Sages—retreat after accusing Guanyin of ambushing them.
  • Burning Lamp captures Bull Demon King and Flood Dragon Demon King with the Twenty-Four Heavens. Guanyin captures Lion-Camel King, while Peng Demon King escapes.
  • Auspicious Spirit Bodhisattva captures Macaque King. Erlang God and the Six Sages of Mount Mei defeat and bind King Yurun.
  • The rebellion ends with five of the Nine Great Sages captured alive. Peng Demon King, King Green Bamboo, King Tongming, and the Handsome Monkey King escape.
  • From the Northern Reed Continent, Lu Qingfeng reflects that the rebellion ended far more easily than expected because the Buddhist experts intervened. Six Ears worries whether the Stone Monkey can survive the coming crisis, and Lu Qingfeng admits that the situation looks grim.

Character Developments

  • Jade Emperor: Becomes increasingly frustrated as the Heavenly forces fail to decisively win. He is humiliated when Guanyin’s attack reveals that the apparent Monkey King was only a decoy, prompting him to call on the Buddhist powers directly.
  • Erlang God: Demonstrates his superior combat ability by fighting several Great Sages at once and exposing the Outer Law Incarnations with his Third Eye. He is portrayed as the only major Heavenly Court combatant fighting with genuine commitment.
  • Guanyin Bodhisattva: Takes an active role in the battle, first attempting to assist Erlang God and later capturing Lion-Camel King. Her ambush causes Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears to abandon their disguises.
  • Burning Lamp Primordial Buddha: Returns to the conflict after sensing the demonic qi and swiftly captures Bull Demon King and Flood Dragon Demon King, showing the overwhelming power of ancient Buddhist figures.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears: Their deception is exposed when their Outer Law Incarnations are struck and recognized. They retreat strategically rather than risk revealing their true bodies.
  • Bull Demon King: Realizes too late that several of the younger Great Sages have deceived him by using incarnations. He is left to face Erlang God after his supposed allies flee.
  • Handsome Monkey King/Wukong: Avoids direct combat and uses an incarnation to mislead the Heavenly forces. His true whereabouts remain unknown, but the chapter emphasizes the danger now facing him.
  • Peng Demon King: Escapes immediately after recognizing that the situation has turned hopeless.
  • Macaque King and King Yurun: Both are captured after the Buddhist and Heavenly forces close in on the remaining Great Sages.

Significant Themes

  • Illusion, deception, and hidden identities: Much of the rebellion is based on Outer Law Incarnations, allowing Lu Qingfeng, Six Ears, and Wukong to manipulate the battle and conceal their true locations.
  • The imbalance of power: The Nine Great Sages appear formidable against the ordinary Heavenly troops, but ancient Buddhist figures such as Burning Lamp and Guanyin overwhelm them effortlessly.
  • Political and military restraint: Lu Qingfeng observes that many Heavenly officials deliberately hold back. Li Heavenly King and the Third Prince fight only superficially, suggesting internal rivalries and political calculations within Heaven.
  • The manipulation of destiny: The capture or disappearance of the “protagonist” Wukong threatens to derail the Journey to the West before it properly begins. The chapter highlights the conflict between predetermined heavenly plans and the characters’ attempts to disrupt them.
  • Humiliation and loss of authority: Heaven’s confidence collapses when its forces discover they were deceived by incarnations. The rebellion, initially portrayed as earth-shaking, ends abruptly once true Buddhist power is brought to bear.

Character Interactions

  • The Jade Emperor consults Guanyin and Burning Lamp, relying on Buddhist assistance after the Heavenly forces reach a stalemate.
  • Guanyin and Erlang God cooperate to target Wukong, but her intervention accidentally exposes the larger deception.
  • Erlang God clashes with Bull Demon King, Flood Dragon Demon King, King Green Bamboo, King Tongming, and Wukong’s incarnation, proving himself the strongest active fighter on the battlefield.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears openly taunt Guanyin after escaping, accusing her of using a dishonorable ambush.
  • Bull Demon King realizes that his “younger brothers” have manipulated him, but has no time to confront them because Erlang God immediately continues the attack.
  • Auspicious Spirit Bodhisattva assists Erlang God and the Heavenly army by capturing Macaque King, receiving their thanks afterward.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears discuss the aftermath, concluding that the intervention of the Buddhist School has made the Stone Monkey’s survival highly uncertain.

Character Developments

  • Six Ears: Remains deeply concerned about Wukong and resentful that what seemed like a terrible calamity ultimately becomes a great opportunity. Nevertheless, he is genuinely pleased by Wukong’s freedom and success.
  • Sun Wukong: Evolves from a trapped rebel into a being divided among three bodies: a suppressed Demon Body, a Buddhist Dharma Body, and a free Indestructible Dao Body. The furnace transforms his apparent defeat into a breakthrough.
  • Yang Jian: Demonstrates his superior combat ability by defeating Wukong, largely because he already possesses an Indestructible Dao Body.
  • Guanyin and Tathagata: Guanyin helps capture Wukong, while Tathagata decisively ends the rebellion and arranges Wukong’s threefold fate.
  • The monkey disciples: Lose their king temporarily but are rescued and sheltered by Lu Qingfeng.

  • The cost of power and freedom: Wukong divides himself among Daoism, Buddhism, and his demonic nature to survive the plans of Heaven and the Buddhist School.
  • Cultivation and transcendence: Lu Qingfeng’s breakthrough highlights the importance of patient cultivation and mastering sect-defining techniques.
  • Political balance among great powers: Heaven and Buddhism compromise rather than destroy Wukong, preserving their authority while preventing further conflict.

  • Wukong later recounts his ordeal to both companions, explaining how his apparent defeat became a path to greater freedom.
  • Six Ears envies Wukong’s gains, but Lu Qingfeng reassures him that the Twelve Capital Demon God Art can eventually provide comparable power.

Ch. 719The Destruction of Space-Time, Reality and Illusion!

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Lu Qingfeng decides to leave the Journey to the West Time-Space and separate from Six Ears. He explains that their time together is ultimately illusory and that they may only meet again if Six Ears reaches the Great Encompassment Dao Fruit—or if Lu Qingfeng eventually gains the power to resurrect him.
  • Six Ears desperately tries to follow Lu Qingfeng, but Lu Qingfeng uses the Cloud Summit Step more skillfully and escapes. Before leaving, Lu Qingfeng asks Wukong Daoist to watch over Six Ears.
  • Lu Qingfeng returns to the present Guangyuan Realm, where more than two thousand years have passed, despite only about seven hundred years passing in the Journey to the West Time-Space.
  • He reunites with Ao Le, who has been guarding the stars and comprehending the Eastern Emperor Bell. Lu Qingfeng reveals that he has reached the Golden Immortal Realm.
  • Lu Qingfeng explains that his Golden Immortal cultivation, like the treasures and achievements gained in alternate time-spaces, is not truly permanent. When a time-space is destroyed, the cultivation, treasures, and experiences originating there disappear.
  • Ao Le’s cultivation from the destroyed Killing-Calamity Time-Space rapidly regresses from the third stage of Earth Immortal to her original first stage. The Eastern Emperor Bell, the twelve Capital Netherworld King Banners, the Immortal-Slaying Flying Knife, the Pure Tranquil Bamboo Staff, and the Five-Colored Divine Light all vanish as well.
  • Lu Qingfeng reassures Ao Le that the lost cultivation still leaves behind traces and foundations, allowing her to recover and potentially grow stronger through future cultivation.
  • He gives Ao Le his Treasure Gourd clones for protection. They can repel ordinary Heavenly Immortals, shield her from stronger enemies, and help her escape through time-space.
  • Ao Le realizes that Lu Qingfeng is preparing to leave again. He confirms that something has happened to his elder brother and that he must return to investigate.

Character Developments

  • Lu Qingfeng becomes more emotionally detached and philosophically mature. His experiences have taught him to distinguish between illusory gains in alternate time-spaces and genuine, lasting achievements in the present.
  • Despite this understanding, he remains deeply sentimental. His separation from Six Ears causes him sadness, but he chooses to leave because returning to the present offers Six Ears a possible future reunion.
  • Six Ears demonstrates his loyalty and dependence on Lu Qingfeng. Although he has become a Golden Immortal, he still views Lu Qingfeng as his closest companion and is distressed by the sudden separation.
  • Ao Le is overjoyed by Lu Qingfeng’s return and proud of his advancement, but she experiences shock and disappointment when her cultivation and treasures disappear. Her playful teasing of Lu Qingfeng highlights their affectionate marital bond. She also quickly recognizes that his gift of the Treasure Gourds signals another impending departure.

Significant Themes

  • Illusion versus reality: Achievements, treasures, cultivation, and even relationships formed in alternate time-spaces may disappear when those time-spaces are destroyed.
  • The impermanence of existence: The chapter emphasizes that both material possessions and personal accomplishments can be erased by the larger movement of time-space.
  • Emotional attachment and separation: Lu Qingfeng’s farewell to Six Ears shows that even beings of great cultivation remain vulnerable to friendship, grief, and longing.
  • True cultivation versus borrowed power: Gains made in unstable time-spaces are temporary, while lasting advancement must ultimately be achieved in the real, present world.
  • Hope within loss: Although the alternate achievements vanish, their traces remain as foundations, suggesting that apparent losses can still contribute to future growth.

Character Interactions

  • Lu Qingfeng and Six Ears share a painful farewell, with Six Ears pleading to accompany him and Lu Qingfeng gently but firmly refusing.
  • Lu Qingfeng entrusts Wukong Daoist with protecting Six Ears after his departure.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Ao Le reunite warmly, balancing affection, humor, and philosophical discussion.
  • Ao Le reacts emotionally to the disappearance of her treasures, while Lu Qingfeng calmly explains the nature of time-space destruction.
  • Their playful exchange over the Treasure Gourd clones reinforces their intimate relationship, but Ao Le’s final question reveals her fear that Lu Qingfeng is leaving her once again.

Ch. 720Yellow Wind Ridge: The Great Sage Battles Lingji!

Chapter Summary

Lu Qingfeng learns through his enhanced Seven-Bird Minor Evolution Numerology that his sworn elder brother, Great Sage Yellow Wind, is in danger. Although his Golden Immortal cultivation is powerful, it is unstable because it comes from traversing time and space and may regress without warning. Aware of both the advantages and risks, Lu Qingfeng decides to return to the Earth Immortal Realm before his strength disappears.
After reassuring Ao Le, Lu Qingfeng summons several powerful subordinates and brings Qin Zhen’s corpse, the Fangtian Jade Seal, and the Emperor’s Sword. Using his Seven-Bird Numerology to determine the Earth Immortal Realm’s location and the Cloud Summit Step to travel, he crosses the void and returns in less than ten years—far faster than Yellow-Browed Boy’s journey over a century. After more than thirteen thousand years, he arrives back in the Earth Immortal Realm.
At Yellow Wind Ridge, Great Sage Yellow Wind is engaged in a prolonged battle with Auspicious Spirit Bodhisattva, Lingji. Lingji has been ordered by Tathagata to suppress Yellow Wind and has brought Buddhist forces and treasures, including the Flying Dragon Treasure Staff and the Wind-Calming Pearl. Yellow Wind counters with his terrifying Samadhi Divine Wind, scattering Buddhist scriptures, monks, Arhats, Vajras, and even damaging the surrounding Buddhist formations. The battle has continued for roughly ten years without either side gaining a decisive advantage.
Many immortals, Buddhas, and demons gather to observe. They are astonished that Lingji can hold back the famously powerful Yellow Wind, whose reputation was established by defeating or repelling Arhats and Heavenly Court deities. Observers explain that Yellow Wind was originally a Dao-attaining rat beneath Spirit Mountain who became a demon after stealing pure lamp oil. Tathagata has repeatedly attempted to subdue him and now uses Lingji and specially chosen treasures to contain him.
Among the spectators are Heavenly Court deities Yang Ren and Huang Tianhua, fellow disciples of True Lord Qingxu Daode. They sympathize with Yellow Wind and hope he defeats Lingji, despite recognizing that Yellow Wind is ultimately disadvantaged by the Western Buddhist School’s immense backing. They discuss Yellow Wind’s stubborn refusal to join Buddhism and speculate that he may seek protection from the Heaven Heavenly Dao Sect or Black Wind Mountain.
The conversation reveals that Yellow Wind has acknowledged Lu Qingfeng as his third brother. Lu once intervened in the Five Directions Realm, later joined the Thunder Department, and became a Divine General. Yang Ren recalls that Lu was involved in taking an Earth Immortal opportunity connected to Huang Tianhua’s disciple. Huang Tianhua considers recruiting Yellow Wind into the Chan Sect because of the value of his Samadhi Divine Wind, but cannot do so because his master disdains demon-kind and would not approve.
The chapter ends with Huang Tianhua’s disciple, Mu Yuanyi, realizing that Yellow Wind was responsible for taking his Dao companion’s opportunity. Huang Tianhua warns him not to become arrogant merely because of rapid cultivation and instructs him to observe the battle carefully to understand the true power of the Three Realms’ experts.

Character Developments and Interactions

  • Lu Qingfeng: Acts decisively to protect Yellow Wind, while remaining realistic about the instability of his borrowed or time-linked Golden Immortal cultivation.
  • Ao Le: Supports Lu’s decision but worries about the danger, showing her concern and loyalty toward him and his sworn brothers.
  • Great Sage Yellow Wind: Demonstrates extraordinary strength and defiance by resisting the Buddhist School despite years of suppression.
  • Lingji/Auspicious Spirit Bodhisattva: Serves as Tathagata’s representative and uses Buddhist formations and countermeasures to contain Yellow Wind.
  • Yang Ren and Huang Tianhua: Discuss Yellow Wind sympathetically and reveal their own interest in recruiting or influencing him. Their shared history and close brotherly relationship are emphasized.
  • Mu Yuanyi: Learns that Yellow Wind was connected to the loss of his Dao companion’s opportunity and is forced to confront a powerful figure far beyond his own level.
  • Lu Qingfeng and Yellow Wind: Their sworn-brother relationship becomes central to the chapter, motivating Lu’s return and potentially setting up his intervention in the battle.

Significant Themes

  • Loyalty and sworn brotherhood: Lu’s willingness to cross realms to help Yellow Wind highlights the strength of their bond.
  • Power and instability: Lu’s Golden Immortal cultivation grants him extraordinary ability but also carries the danger of sudden regression.
  • Sect politics and protection: Yellow Wind’s survival depends not only on personal strength but also on whether a major sect is willing to shelter him from Buddhism.
  • Defiance versus submission: Yellow Wind refuses to submit to the Western Buddhist School despite repeated attempts to capture and subdue him.
  • The vast hierarchy of the Three Realms: The reactions of the spectators show that even famous Great Sages remain vulnerable to sects and higher-level powers.
  • Hidden consequences of past actions: Lu’s earlier deeds in the Five Directions Realm resurface through Mu Yuanyi’s resentment and may create future conflict.
