History

Great Xia Tribute Pact

A thousand years before the main story, Great Xia's Founding Emperor made a pact with the Immortal Sects: in exchange for their assistance in unifying the central plains, the dynasty would collect an additional annual tribute from the population for the sects. 3

In earlier eras, immortals were said to descend mountains to kill demons, cure children, and ward off evil. After Great Xia's consolidation of power, these deeds survived chiefly as stories and operas while the tribute system continued. 3

Qiling Ruins and Immortal Destiny

The discovery of ancient ruins in the Qiling Mountain Range drew disciples and noble families seeking spiritual herbs, immortal seedlings, and opportunities for ascension. 56

Reports soon spread of sect and family disciples achieving abrupt breakthroughs after entering the ruins. Spirit Sword Mountain's Young Master Jian warned that the mountain was dangerous and that people could become Evil Seeds. 72

The competition for ruin-derived “immortal destiny” intensified rivalries between sects, their internal branches, and noble families. 72 323

Pill Sect Siege

Five major Immortal Sects demanded to “borrow” Pill Sect disciples for a secret refinement project. Sect Master Yuan Li refused, believing the disciples would not return alive and that the intended item violated the Pill Sect's principles. 303 304

The sects subsequently attacked Pill Mountain. Pill Sect-affiliated noble families resisted with stored artifacts and medicinal enhancements, but suffered severe casualties against superior cultivators from the attacking sects. 304

Ji You intervened after preparing the mountain formation, preventing the attackers from breaching the Ninth Tier and forcing the Five Great Immortal Sects to retreat. Corpse Tide and Ruin War

When the corpse tide spread across the Nine Provinces, the Immortal Sects initially rejected the Celestial Academy's proposal to permanently seal the ruins, unwilling to surrender the immortal destinies within them. 326
