Leaving the technical college.
Shura raced toward the city he often visited, running wildly like a playful child, freely squandering his youth in play, his mind filled with thoughts of what to do for fun.
"Boom shakalaka..."
On the road, a sports car blasted energetic music. The speed limit on this sparsely populated mountain road was eighty, but its owner had pushed it to one hundred and ten, chasing the thrill of speed.
A rather sexy woman sat in the passenger seat. Her wavy hair fell over her shoulders, a cigarette dangled from her lips, and her head unconsciously swayed to the beat. She wore a red off-the-shoulder dress that reached her thighs, her eyes hazy.
The man in the driver's seat held the steering wheel with one hand, a cigarette between the fingers of his left, as though inhaling something intoxicating. His face flushed as he shouted excitedly, "Yeah!! To hell with studying! I've got plenty of money!"
Knock, knock, knock!
The window glass made crisp, rhythmic sounds, as though someone were knocking on it. The man looked over in confusion, then muttered as if he had seen a ghost:
"No way?! Someone's riding a dog that can run as fast as my sports car!?"
Natsu Hiraku was knocking on the window of the speeding car as he called out, "You're speeding. Sorry for the trouble, but please slow down. You could easily get into an accident like this."
"Damn it!"
The man muttered to himself, stubbed out the cigarette in his left hand, gripped the steering wheel with both hands, and stomped on the accelerator. The sports car roared as its speed shot toward one hundred and thirty.
Feeling the sports car rapidly pulling away, Natsu Hiraku patted Shura on the shoulder and called out, "Can you catch up?"
"Woof! (Of course!)"
Shura watched the sports car disappear into the distance. Scarlet cursed energy surfaced around him, and he chased after it with even greater effort, like a dog pursuing a fleeing cat.
Inside the sports car.
Feeling the car suddenly accelerate, the woman gradually came to her senses and asked in confusion, "What's wrong?"
"N-Nothing. I must have been seeing things."
The man swallowed and reassured himself, I must have smoked too much and started hallucinating. How could a dog run at one hundred and ten with someone riding on its back?
Knock, knock, knock!
"Your speed is too high. Please pull over slowly and return to the normal speed limit for this road."
The sudden voice nearly scared the man into wetting himself. This time, he did not even dare look at the window. He simply floored the accelerator and shouted, "Am I seeing ghosts in broad daylight?!"
Now fully awake, the woman watched the speed continue to climb. Her expression turned tense as she shouted a warning, "Slow down! Slow down! The car will lose control if you keep driving like this!"
As they took a turn, the car ran over a pebble the size of a quail egg and immediately lost control.
If the driver had been traveling normally, nothing would likely have happened. He might even have had time to react and avoid it. But this car was already nearing one hundred and seventy. There was no time to think. The car flew off the road and plunged straight into the woods beside it.
"Woof woof, woof woof woof! (Master, the car's gone.)"
Shura gradually came to a stop. Looking at the tire marks on the ground and the broken trees by the roadside, he then heard a violent explosion from within the forest.
"..."
Hearing the explosion, Natsu Hiraku was speechless. He had merely happened upon a speeding car and kindly reminded its owner. Well, that settled it. The owner would never need another reminder in the future—they had gone straight to heaven...
Although he knew everyone in the car had likely been wiped out—after all, the car had been too fast even for Shura to catch, and it had exploded, leaving almost no chance of survival—Natsu Hiraku still jumped down from Shura's back and ordered:
"Go see if anyone's alive. If there is, bring them out."
Having received the order, Shura rushed straight into the woods.
Natsu Hiraku took out his phone and called the police. After all, his blind self would only be a burden right now. Though he possessed cursed energy, he was unfamiliar with the world of the blind and had no intention of getting involved in that world in the future.
Before long, the call connected, and a woman's voice came through the phone. "Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. What is your emergency?"
"On the road to Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, I saw a car that got into an accident. I'm currently rescuing the people inside. Sorry for the trouble, but please come quickly. Yes..."
After giving a brief explanation, Natsu Hiraku hung up. He had made the call. All that remained was to see whether anyone inside had survived, though the odds were low.
He sighed helplessly. "Wouldn't it be better to follow the law? Why drive so fast? Look what happened. Who knows when you'll get to drive again next time? Good thing I only ride dogs and don't drive. It's way too dangerous."
Inside the forest.
The out-of-control car had crashed into a towering tree. The driver's side had been crushed by the tree, and red bloodstains could be seen on the ground.
The woman in the passenger seat was still wearing her seat belt. Her body did not seem seriously injured, but the shockwave from the explosion had left her mind blank and her vision blurred. All she could see was a sheet of fiery red.
If no one came to save her, she would be burned alive by the flames within five minutes.
She whispered, "It hurts... Is anyone coming to save me?"
Bang! Bang!
A series of loud crashes sounded beside her ears, causing the drowsy woman to slowly open her eyes. One glance outside the window terrified her into fainting again.
Shura was tearing at the car door, his pupils scarlet. He had heard someone calling for help inside. Following his master's instructions, he had to save her.
With only three pulls, he forcibly ripped off the jammed door, tore away the seat belt, then bit the woman's hand and dragged her out of the car to claim credit from his master.
Along the way, he saw the human in the driver's seat crushed into a pancake of flesh. He merely glanced at him and paid no attention, since his master only wanted the living saved.
A minute later, Shura brought the still-living woman before Natsu Hiraku, then sat on the ground and wagged his tail.
Natsu Hiraku crouched beside her. He merely touched her wrist to check whether she had a pulse, but after checking, he felt that was not enough. What if she was bleeding? Wouldn't she bleed to death?
Facing Shura, he asked, "Where is she bleeding?"
Shura lowered his head to look. The woman before him was covered in red, so he answered, "Woof woof! (She's covered in blood!)"
"..."
Natsu Hiraku was speechless. He knew this dog's intelligence still needed improvement. He did not ask any further questions and instead began feeling her over bit by bit. This was the last resort.
From an outsider's perspective, though, he looked like a pervert groping a corpse...
As he felt around, he noticed something was wrong. This woman's hand bones were far too slender, as though she had not fully developed yet. She seemed rather young.
As he continued feeling, Natsu Hiraku muttered to himself, "There's some bleeding from her forehead, but it isn't serious. The back of her head is fine. There are no wounds on her neck."
"Cough, cough! Next spot, next spot..."
After examining her, Natsu Hiraku confirmed her injuries. Her forehead had some scraped skin, which had already scabbed over. Her thigh had been cut, but it was not serious and did not need treatment. It was only a superficial scrape. He just could not be sure whether she had any internal injuries.
All they needed to do now was wait for the police.
Less than ten minutes later, police sirens and ambulance sirens sounded at the same time. Natsu Hiraku lay on Shura's back as he waited. The woman on the ground... no, more accurately, the girl, still showed no signs of waking up.
The three officers in the lead police car saw the child waiting by the roadside and quickly stopped. They put on the police caps beside them, opened the doors, and got out.
Several medical workers also got out of the ambulance behind them.
Natsu Hiraku stood and faced the approaching group. "Hello. The girl lying on the ground is the injured person."
"Understood."
One officer approached with a pen and paper, while his other two colleagues headed into the woods. Several medical workers carrying first-aid kits ran over from behind.
Natsu Hiraku and Shura were brought aside for questioning.
The officer asked, "Was this vehicle involved in an accident, or was it something else?"
"Speeding. Also, I'm blind, so I couldn't see anything." As Natsu Hiraku spoke, he removed his sunglasses, opened his eyes, and waved his left hand in front of his face.
Seeing Natsu Hiraku's lifeless eyes, the officer spoke apologetically. "Is that so? Sorry, kid. I was too blunt with my questions. Let me ask one more thing. How was that girl rescued?"
"My Shura rescued her. He's a Tibetan Mastiff, and he's very strong. He's my guide dog now."
As Natsu Hiraku spoke, he patted Shura, who was crouching beside him.
"Uh... a Tibetan Mastiff as a guide dog..."
The officer's hand holding the pen paused. This was the first time he had heard of a Tibetan Mastiff being a guide dog. Which Japanese dog-training organization had raised one like this? This was absurd.
"Ahem!"
The officer coughed lightly and continued, "Sorry for the trouble, but please give me your name and address. We'll take over from here, kid."
Natsu Hiraku responded, "Okay. My name is Natsu Hiraku. I'm currently living at Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College. My home address is... I won't be going back anytime soon."
"Alright, understood. You may leave now, kid."
The officer nodded and waved, indicating that Natsu Hiraku could go. Natsu Hiraku put on his sunglasses and nodded, then mounted Shura's back and instructed him in his mind, Walk slowly. Don't use cursed energy.
"Woof woof! (Okay, Master!)"
Watching the boy and dog leave, the officer felt his entire worldview shatter. Tibetan Mastiffs were famous for their ferocity. One this obedient was already absurd, let alone one that served as a guide dog. And it could carry someone while running?
Once he sensed that no one was around, Natsu Hiraku patted Shura on the shoulder to signal him to speed up. It was already past three in the afternoon. If they did not hurry up and have fun, it would be night soon. What was there to do at night?
"Awoo~!"
Shura howled and began accelerating. Scarlet cursed energy covered his body, his tongue hanging out as he enjoyed the thrill of speed.
Natsu Hiraku gripped the dog leash tightly, as though riding a horse. It was a little painful from all the bouncing, so he had to protect himself with cursed energy.
After entering the city, Natsu Hiraku walked down the street holding the leash while Shura led the way in front of him. They drew one hundred percent of the attention.
"Look, look! What a huge dog! What breed is that? It looks so well-behaved, and it's even a guide dog. Honey, should we get one too?"
Faced with his wife's coquettish request, the man felt immense pressure. He seemed to know what breed the dog was, but he was not certain. He took out his phone and searched for it, then compared the results. His expression worsened as he said uneasily:
"H-Honey, we can't keep that dog."
"Why not?"
The man swallowed. "That's... a Tibetan Mastiff! One of the fiercest dog breeds. I don't know how that kid trained it, but if we kept one, we'd have a dismemberment case in no time."
Hearing the consequences, the woman said nothing else. She merely looked at Shura with fear and muttered inwardly, Are kids this hardcore these days... Raising Tibetan Mastiffs...
Wherever Shura passed, everyone within ten meters ahead made way. His presence was no less imposing than a lion's. If a teenager had not been holding his leash, people might have already called the police and run away.
Shura looked around, caught a particularly delicious scent, and called to Natsu Hiraku, "Woof woof woof! (Master, I want to eat!)"
"Takoyaki? Let's go over there."
Natsu Hiraku also caught the scent in the air and followed Shura's lead.
"Holy crap, that's one huge dog!"
Seeing the dog, which was nearly as tall as half a person, approach, the stall owner was so frightened he nearly abandoned his stall and ran. But Natsu Hiraku called him back in time. "Don't be afraid. He won't bite. He's my guide dog. Could I have five servings of takoyaki?"
"R-Right... Your guide dog is really unusual, kid..."
The takoyaki vendor wiped the sweat from his forehead and began skillfully making the takoyaki.
Natsu Hiraku simply stood there waiting, but Shura apparently could not wait any longer. The rich aroma filled his nose, and drool flowed from his mouth.
Natsu Hiraku could only lightly tap Shura on the head to tell him to wait patiently. The vendor's heart turned cold at the sight, but when he saw that nothing happened, he gradually relaxed and asked casually:
"What breed is this dog, kid? How did you raise it so big?"
"A Tibetan Mastiff. I usually feed him beef bones and beef. He's pretty friendly, though his intelligence still needs work."
"A Tibetan... Tibetan Mastiff. Tibetan Mastiffs are good. They eat well and grow strong."
The vendor laughed a few times and said nothing more. They clearly were not from the same world. He handed over the five finished servings of takoyaki and said, "That'll be three thousand yen."
"Wait a moment."
Natsu Hiraku took out a ten-thousand-yen bill from his pocket and handed it over. "Change, please."
Seeing the ten-thousand-yen bill in the kid's hand, greed rose in the vendor's heart. He muttered inwardly, He's blind anyway, and that dog scared me. I might as well take two thousand extra yen as compensation. Yes, compensation. I'm definitely not taking extra.
"Sure, just a moment."
The vendor accepted the ten-thousand-yen bill and handed over the five servings of takoyaki. He then took out two two-thousand-yen bills and one one-thousand-yen bill from his pocket, handing them over as he said, "Seven thousand in total."
Natsu Hiraku lowered his head toward Shura. His previously gentle face gradually became stern as he turned and said, "Mister, would you like to exchange these for new bills?"
"These bills are new, kid. You can feel them if you want."
The vendor looked at the stern expression on the kid's face and felt uncertain. Isn't this kid blind? If he can feel it out, I'll admit it. But he isn't even touching them. Looks like he's used to being cheated and is just trying to intimidate me. Sorry, but I'm not timid. Who knows where I'll be selling tomorrow?
Though Natsu Hiraku was blind, that did not mean Shura was blind. He might not recognize words, but he could count!
He could still tell a few numbers apart.
