Population Census (Part 2)
Carl Kestis glanced at Ferman and asked, "You seem pretty excited. Isn't this Population Census just some statistical survey? It doesn't have much to do with us, does it?"
"How could it not? Once the census is done, we'll basically be confirmed as official immigrants. After that, as long as we keep doing our jobs, ships will soon come to take us to our official workplaces," Ferman said.
Carl Kestis scratched his head. "How do you know so much about this?"
"Hey!" Ferman patted Carl on the shoulder. "Get out more, talk to the people around you. If you stay cooped up all day like you do, of course you won't know! I found out about this while chatting with a Guardian. Don't be fooled by how stiff and fully armed they look on duty. Once they're off work, they're just like us. Hahaha, drinking, smoking, checking out pretty women walking by..."
Carl Kestis lowered his head and fell silent. After thinking for a moment, he looked up again and asked, "So for the Population Census, we just report our names and register, and that's it?" He seemed to be clinging to one last shred of hope.
Ferman thought for a moment before answering, "It's pretty detailed. They'll do a basic health scan, then take a little blood sample for their records."
Carl Kestis's heart began pounding violently. He lowered his head to hide his intense unease and said, "I'm going back to the dorm first. I'm not feeling well."
"Hey, didn't you say you were buying me beer?" Ferman said.
"Tomorrow, tomorrow!" Carl Kestis said as he quickened his pace and fled back to his dormitory.
