(I'd almost forgotten about the Hutts... I'll take two chapters here to sort out the Hutt civil war storyline and briefly explain what the Hutts were doing during the Clone Wars. In other words, why the Hutts erupted into civil war under Tang Xiao's influence.)

During the era of the Galactic Republic, Palpatine had secretly been courting Jabba. After Jabba suffered a disastrous setback on Tatooine and nearly lost his position within the Desilijic kajidic, the Hutt underworld boss finally bowed his head to Palpatine.

At the time, the Hutt Council consisted of five members: Kiliak and Jabba of the Desilijic kajidic, Alok of the Besadi kajidic, Marlo of the Kunnarac kajidic, and Oruba of the Goresla Family.

However, the internal struggles within the Desilijic kajidic were equally complex. During his earlier campaign to wipe out Black Sun, Tang Xiao had made contact with Hutt Ziro, one of Black Sun's Nine Vegos at the time and also Jabba's uncle.

(PS: Strictly speaking, Hutts aren't exactly hermaphrodites, but they can change their sex depending on the circumstances... So this species is utterly bizarre in every sense of the word. Therefore, don't be surprised when I say Ziro is Jabba's uncle but keep referring to her as "she." That isn't a typo.)

Ziro had been expelled from the kajidic at the time and was living a difficult life. With Tang Xiao's secret support, she went back to find her and Jabba's imprisoned father, Zorba. Zorba and Ziro then returned to the Desilijic kajidic and launched a counterattack, splitting the kajidic apart.
