It was precisely because of Orbital Bombardment that a split emerged within the Jedi Order.
Some Jedi Knights began to believe that war meant using every possible means. For the sake of victory, no method should be off-limits. Since Orbital Bombardment could bring victory, it should be used without hesitation! As for what came afterward, that could be dealt with afterward!
Another group of Jedi Knights, however, remained faithful to the Jedi Order's creed. They believed that even in war, civilization and humanity should not be abandoned. Once those things were cast aside, the only possible end was mutual destruction. If a battle had reached the point where victory required massacring civilians, carrying out Orbital Bombardment, and destroying a planet, then that battle had already been lost.
More importantly, if the Jedi Knights, who proclaimed themselves guardians of the Milky Way Galaxy, began to abuse Orbital Bombardment as a weapon of war, then what were the Jedi Knights? Were they still guardians of the Milky Way Galaxy? How would such Jedi Knights be any different from the Sith?
The two factions of Jedi Knights engaged in fierce debates, but neither side could persuade the other. A split also appeared among the Jedi Order's highest ranks.
Mace Windu, the second-most important figure in the Jedi Order, was ambushed by the Archangel of Death during the campaign on Haruun Kal. His prized disciple, Depa Barris, had also fallen to the Dark Side. Caught between Depa Barris and the Archangel of Death, Mace Windu was gravely wounded. Depa Barris severed his spine with a single slash, leaving him permanently paralyzed.
Although he was later saved and managed to cling to life, Mace Windu's temperament changed drastically, as did his views on war.
Mace Windu was the one who supported doing whatever it took
