Background

Trunks is the son of Vegeta and Bulma. As a child, he regularly visited Son Goten at Mount Paozu; despite being able to fly and transform into a Super Saiyan, the two spent much of their free time catching insects, fishing, and fighting wild animals for fun 2.

He is closely associated with Capsule Corp and is expected to inherit the company in the future, though his desire to train often conflicts with that responsibility 186 195. He later becomes an older brother to Bra, initially wishing for a brother before quickly growing affectionate toward his newborn sister 146.

Personality

Trunks is competitive and takes defeats personally. After Goten defeats him through a Solar Flare feint, Trunks insists that he only lost because he was careless and vows to devise a countermeasure before their next match 3. Goten's sudden growth frustrates him at first, particularly when Vegeta responds by forcing him into stricter training 8 10.

His competitiveness gradually becomes sustained determination. He seeks Goten's advice, accepts arduous Hyperbolic Time Chamber training, and continues pursuing strength even when he doubts he can catch up to his friend 204 205. He is also more enthusiastic about superhero work than Goten, actively asking Videl and the police for a way to receive crime reports 180 181.

Early Rivalry with Goten

Trunks joins Goten's training at Mount Paozu and agrees to spar in Super Saiyan form. Their first major match ends when Goten blinds him with Solar Flare and knocks him into a mountain, prompting Trunks to promise he will win their next fight 2 3.

He later seeks a rematch after creating new techniques. Goten initially immobilizes him with psychic power, but Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan and breaks free before ultimately conceding defeat when Goten restrains him again 7. His inability to counter the technique leads him to ask Vegeta for help, only for Vegeta to insist that greater strength is the sole answer 8.

Potential Awakening

Son Goten uses a ritual based on Old Kai's method to awaken Trunks's inner power. The process significantly raises Trunks's strength and lets him enter a Mystic State, though Gohan still defeats him in their subsequent Hyperbolic Time Chamber spar 58 59.

Future Trunks Crisis

When Future Trunks arrives injured at Bulma's house, present-day Trunks is among the first to meet him. He learns of Black Goku and watches Vegeta begin harsh training for his future counterpart, gaining further perspective on the power of divine Saiyan transformations 93 95.

West City Hero Work

Trunks and Goten don superhero costumes and patrol West City. Finding the city unusually peaceful due to Gohan's earlier heroics, Trunks contacts Videl to establish a police-alert connection and actively seeks opportunities to help people 180.

His enthusiasm persists as their local fame grows, though he and Goten differ in attitude: Trunks remains eager to act as a hero while Goten is comparatively indifferent 181. He later joins Goten in opposing Gamma 1 and the planned creation of Cell MAX 183 185.

Prison Planet Capture

An android named Frieza ambushes Trunks at Bulma's house, knocks him unconscious, and imprisons him on Prison Planet 190. Goten immediately locates him with a crystal ball, frees him from his chains, and gives him a Senzu Bean 190.

Trunks accompanies Goten through the prison afterward, supporting Goten's decision to retaliate against Frieza for the abduction. Upon returning home, he confirms that Goten is his best friend when Bulma thanks Goten for rescuing him 191 192.

Later Training

After seeing Goten's overwhelming power, Trunks asks him directly for a way to become stronger. Goten recommends the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, later helping Trunks enter it by opening its sealed entrance with Super Saiyan Third Grade 204 205.
